  1. do you have a source for this statement? It is in contrast to everything I have found on the subject. I understand there are restrictions on how many, based on property size, ability to care for them, and other factors, but "against the law?" Please provide some source for this claim. As to your "think you heard infant girls are kiled" comment, you might find this article interesting. http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/full/353/11/1171 It is a study on the effect of the "one child per family" law which has been in effect since 1979. The purpose of the law is to try and stem the population growth, however infanticide has gone on since before christ in China and in India. ~HAP
  2. I would never argue with a sparky. Good to hear from you OneGod. Hey, I am trying to get OUT of the ladder climbing business! Interesting, however that Boulder and the National Green Building Alliance (or whatever it is called) gives the same greenpoints for dimmers that they do for CFs. All construction there requires the contractors to earn green points to get finals. They can be gained by a large variety of methods throughout the construction process. I rather like the program actually, and it is painless. yes, the best savings is to turn off the lights, no question. Wehn in Europe, I was intrigued that every hotel we were in had timer controled lights in the hallways. some were motion sensor activated. what a great way to have light when you need it, but one you enter your room, the hallway goes dark again. what a concept! ~HAP
  3. I am not a huge fan of CF bulbs, I prefer dimmer switches to reduce wattage used and thus energy savings. that allows me to control the light I need for the mood, circumstance and situation. I rarely turn them all the way up. CF bulbs have a use, in places where they are appropriate, such a porch lites that are left on all night for security, or a hallway where they are seldom used. I dunno, even though I am generally a "greenie" I have not jumped on THIS bandwagon. I simply do not see a huge savings in them. Most residential energy use is contained in your appliances, and heating and AC, not in illumination. Go ahead someone convince me. Meanwhile I will concientiously utilize my dimmer switches on incandescent bulbs. ~HAP
  4. although the recent dog killing was sparked by 3 local deaths in that city, China has a huge rabies problem, with over 2600 human deaths reported in 2004 (the last year numbers were available according to articles). From: http://www.guardian.co.uk/china/story/0,,1837454,00.html From: http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/content/2006/s1630810.htm Both the articles and others that can be found have additional information. I do not know the rate of rabies here in the US, to compare. Most articles agree that the real problem is poor rates of vaccination, but also the rapid increase in the pet population (all categories), of registered, non-registered, cared for and loose wild dogs, is a contributing factor. 6000 bites a year in Beijing alone? They do have a dog population problem, and they do need a better way to handle it. They have a huge problem with the rate of human contraction of rabies, almost always fatal in China apparently. I don't like their method of dealing with it either, but they DO need to get a handle on it. That is alot of human deaths, one for every 19 dogs they killed in this "culling" ~HAP
  5. OK Dot, apology accepted, you misread me. As to the "lady" comment, it was directly in response to your "not going to argue with some guy..." nothing more. I apologize for getting ticked off at that myself, and for my careless response. What had ticked me off was, one, I was not arguing, and, two, the guy comment seemed to me to be a lashing out at me in just the way you were offended by my comment. I retaliated in kind, and should not have done so. I concur with what Tom S said, I do not have any issue with your right to move for whatever reason you deem is important to you. I carefully did not mention the state or county you lived in , so as not to identify your location. (I only surmised your state based on the article you posted- other than that, I have no idea where you live.) From the beginning, I thought I was clear that I was referring to STATEWIDE data, not individual cities or counties. the pages offer info (from 2004) for ALL STATES not just the one where what you said was "MY county" is located. None of the links I posted broke down to counties, so I was not attempting to refute your experiences in your particular location. I have absolutely no information, nor seek it, on our particular town or county and did not search for it whatsoever. You have already planned to move from there so it was a moot point. None of my statements were intended to refute your claims in your town. Previous to me, someone had mentioned the possibility of just moving to somewhere away from where you are, but not necessarily so far that you uproot from your current friends and contacts. I truly was TRYING to reinforce what they had said, with data. OK, we have both apologized, good luck with your move, and PLEASE research through other venues than just here at GSC, 'K?.
  6. Dot, I did not understand that you were telling me your whole state is now given over to this "plague". Before it was "My county". Someone else first suggested relocating to another part of your state, an idea I feel was a possible solution for you. I have no desire to suggest you stay where you do not want any longer, nor did I suggest that, ANYWHERE. Would you rather I remove the state statistics? I thought they might be of interest to your search, I guess not, goodbye
  7. Dot, I didn't know I was arguing. I offered a site with numbers rather than opinions. that is all I did. Since, as you pointed out, the data I linked to was listed by STATE, the percentages BY STATE would not change significantly in the space of less than 3 years. Which is what I said. Your doctor is welcome to refute me on this if he wishes. It is math, lady, pure and simple, math. The statistical percentage impact of an influx of new residents in the space of less than 3 years will have very minor impact when mixed into the total population of the number set from which these percentages are drawn (statewide population). What has happened in the town and county where you no longer wish to live, is anecdotal regarding statewide statistics and statewide population. There are areas of any state that are remarkable places to live, no matter what one's personal biases, including your current state. I sincerely hope you somehow will find your utopia, but remember, the problem with utopia is that everyone seeks it. that means someone else might move there too, with cars or not, teeth or not, children or not, english or not....... ~HAP
  8. well, the percentages would not be much different from 2004 to now, you are correct about themn being state data, hence my comment about a 20 mile move. Oh, most all our christians (except for my wife and I) live in colospgs here, (I think Kit mentioned it) we have a wall around the place down there, to keep them from infiltrating the rest of our economy teehee. OK, I am done now.
  9. hmm on my screen it says you wrote this to "Waysider", but when I click reply it shows you wrote Hap. Have we a translation problem? this is too funny. what does it show on everyone else's screen? ~HAP (not Waysider) ahhh, dot, you were editing now I understand
  10. Here is the data for "spanish-at-home" (by state) http://www.statemaster.com/graph/peo_per_o...ak-spanish-home perhaps whoever suggested a 20 mile move was right, for your purposes. I suggest that the article you are thinking of had an ummmmm bias, even though we all know no media has a bias, or is it all media has a bias?, I get so confused. ~HAP
  11. but 7.2% of the households there speak spanish at home, slightly more than where you are now! It'll never work. Mississippi looks better and better.....maybe.
  12. Well Dot, I don't know what you hope to find that fits all your rather narrowing list of criteria. You stated that: I don't know what that means really, whether it is by numbers or by percentage of existing population or whatever, but it is not obvious to me that this is a true statement supportable by statistics. It appears that your "MY county" state location is in the middle of the pack. I found this site http://www.statemaster.com/graph/peo_per_o...an-english-home which might help you locate state data on various issues you mention. (language, foreign birth, languages spoken, crime, etc.) It seems to me however that you already live in a state that is in the middleranking of most those issues. Perhaps your dream hometown does not exist other than in a dream. Since cold seems an issue, I notice that Mississippi, Alabama and West Virginia are at the bottom of the rankings (or "top" by your standards) in percentage where a language other than English is spoken at home. MI and AL are closer to water I guess. I must make clear, if I were contemplating a move, yours are NOT the criteria I would choose. I would lean more to diversity, average education level of the population, a younger population (you said few teens??????- bo-o-o-oring to me!). Hmm, where I live is all of those., I am staying in CO, TYVM! You want a cheap place to buy, yet want to make more money in the same place. Are you aware that wages pretty much mirror cost of living? I dunno, good luck in your search, It all seems pretty much a "grass is greener" issue to me. ~HAP (edited to correct spelling and to disguise a location)

    Big fish pic >>>

White amur= Asian Grass Carp http://us.geocities.com/scosmo451/grass_carp.htm but it is a really big one! umm only recipe I know for carp is: Pin carp to a heavily buttered pine board (do not use margarine, real butter is important) Salt and pepper heavily Preheat oven to 375 degrees Bake fish on board for 95 minutes. Halfway through the cook time, salt and pepper again. Sprinkle thyme or sage to taste. after the above cook time, remove from oven remove fish from pine board ..... ..... ..... discard fish, eat pine board.
  14. given Gunnison's winter climate, I have doubts it would be a place those lowland lowlifes would choose to retire to. I somewhat plan to run up there this summer (its my wife's birthplace) to see some childhood friends of hers. Perhaps I can learn some local scuttlebutt to share here. For the most part, the townies have always considered the camp a bad joke. ~HAP
  15. Are more guns the answer? Already the US has at least 1/3 of the world's firearms according to an article in the Denver Post today. 10 percent of adults own 4 or more, overall, there are 90 firearms per 100 people in the US. Yemen is second with 61 per 100 people. Even as the number of firearms grows in the US (per capita) are we seeing fewer gun related homicides? suicides? Not according to this research: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/hicrc/Firearms.htm I just do not see that the direction to heavily arm yourselves is getting the desired results of making our society safer. On a side note, when the second amendment to the Constitution was ratified, (approximately 1789) weren't most firearms flintlocks and muzzleloaders? slow and laborious to load and fire, and ot all that accurate. They were certainly not the repeating rifles and automatic weapons that today's villians use to carry out mass murders. I dunno, I am not opposed to you having a gun, I have two small arms weapons, (one was purchased just to get it away from someone who felt he should not have one anymore) but the statistics I have read do not indicate that makes us safer. I don't understand the way americans are enamored with guns. ~HAP

    C2 taser

if it fits in your pocket you might taser something other than car keys
  17. Ok then, I could have had NO idea that you were talking of Iraq. How did you come up with a way to bring up Iraq in THIS thread? This thread was totally about prayers for the victims and all the families at VA Tech, which further precipitated my anger at your post, thinking you were bringing the Korean crap from the other thread to this one. Anyway, lets keep this thread on care and concern for those affected, such as LikeAnEagle's family and all the others, 'K? ~HAP
  18. outside sources? BS. This kid has been here since 3rd grade, was 23 when he committed this deed, and was an English major. Being Korean has nothing to do with it AT ALL. My brother and his Korean wife, and my two nephews live in Centreville where his parents live. they did not know of him, (different high schools) but of my half Korean nephews, one is going to Rochester Institute of Technology, and the other has been accepted at Duke and Colgate, hardly entry level schools. They have been strongly encouraged by their Korean mother, not my white brother to be diligent in their studies. Don't you even begin to think that this kid's birthplace or religion had one iota to do with this tragic event. It cannot be laid there. I just got off the phone with my sisrter-in-law, and it has been a hard day on the Korean community there, as they go about their business of raising kids, do9ing jobs, paying their taxes and trying to work hard for their loved, adopted, and legal country. The things cast her way today were just plain ugly, and I have no patience for them. ~HAP
  19. Kathy, Rocky, and anyone else affected by my comment. I understand, I truly do, about it as an exclamation. I guess it was for me a moment of deja vu over Columbine, where people I know whose child was not so fortunate, were offended by similiar comments. Like you, those comments of course were not meant to offend, but in fact they did. I made my point pretty much out of raw emotion over what I have seen, and I tried to explain that. LikeanEagle- please know I hurt for you and yours also, even though your nephew was fortunate. I also know the emotions of those moments of uncertainty, and they also are very harsh times to families like yours. In no way do I fault anyone for their exclamations of joy after those hours of concern. Knowing people from the Columbine community, I expect there will be offers from them to assist in helping the VA Tech community deal with the aftermath. It is their "mission" and they do it well. ~HAP
  20. I too am thankful LAE's nephew is safe, but I cannot give God the credit for it. It would be too much like blaming Him for the loss of those who were not so fortunate. I am not bashing anyone, so please don't take it that way, and I know the comments were not meant in that vein. I know many of the folks who lived through Columbine, and the family of one who died. I could simply not lay that doubt at their feet. This was a heartache day for us all over again. Their tragedy affects all their extended family still. It is at the core of what they consider each day, even without horrendous events lke in VA. With over 20 thousand students at VA Tech, their parents and other friends and family members, that is well over 60000 people personally affected by this. Preliminary discussions have raised many questions as to the response by authorities. These will be major issues that will make the acceptance of this ordeal all the more harder. for a very long time, and virtually every campus around the country will be dealing with them. Such a waste of bright young people. My heart goes out to all of them, it brings back the reality of Columbine oh too much to me. Pray heartily for all these good people, they have a long trail ahead. ~HAP
  21. Call in the lawyers, demand a recount. Hang Chad! Check the overseas absentee ballots. I want a full investigation of this! How can we have confidence in our electoral process with so many unanswered questions???????? ~HAP
  22. Second nature? perhaps. My first nature is to get things right however, which I do more often than not. I am old, but you are right I did not know Adams, unless you meant an old TV show Beats the unreality shows, and it was fun! ~HAP
