  1. I have no experience with horse racing beyond playing early Atari video games, BUT: A large part of yesterday's sad event apparently can be traced to the fact that 75% of today's thouroughbreds carry the bloodline from Native Dancer, who never won the Kentucky Derby. He lost by a head in 1953. This article was printed BEFORE this years race: http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB120...ml?mod=rss_free Following are some of my thoughts on the subject, but I have no conclusion to make regarding it: The last 13 Derby winners have carried this line, as well as Barbaro, injured at the starting gate in 2006 and later put to death. Of course most of these magnificent animals would not have been born if it were not for the horse racing industry, and MOST do not experience the terrible consequences we have seen the last few years. For those horses that escape the ill-fated consequences of their genes, they benefit from the powerful front legs and running style developed from Native Dancer's bloodline. For THESE horses, it gives them the honors and accomplishments they love to, and live to, run for. The rest of their lives are lived in a pampered exotic atmosphere compared to that which is ahead for many work-horses. For those thoroughbreads who do NOT escape the pitfalls of their genes, of course the price is too high. I cannot say whether these incidents outbalance the benefits and existance derived by the many other horses. Its a tough call either way IMO. ~HAP
  2. I feel a need to post here in support of Rocky. When TLB's post (now thankfully removed) was brought to my attention, it struck me as an extremely wrong characterization of Rocky. The person who told me about it (I rarely read this section) was also a little surprised, THAT person and Rocky rarely agree on a topic. I have never known Rocky to post in support of ANYone's abuse of women, nor have I seen him cover for old vpw at any time. I think most here would agree. I am concerned that nobody called TLB out on it long before it sat here for several days, even if it had NOT wrongly included Rocky and had been directed only at Mike and Oldies. OK, I will go quietly back to my corner.......... ~HAP (edited to remove double post)
  3. Like I said earlier however, I would not put it on the door. They get in the way there. The gas meter works for me, or a steel railing. Look around, you can find the right location for you.
  4. the price difference between Petsmart and Walmart says more about the pricing structures of the two stores than it does about the quality of the item. Petsmart is hardly a cheap place to buy, from my experience. Although I would never buy from Walmart, so I would look around for somewhere else. Sorry, I do not have experience YET with the topic, but I expect it is not far off for me. My dog on lasix (furosemide) will likely have those problems soon enough when he just decides it ain't worth the effort to get up and go out his pet door. I will live with that, and clean it up until it just is not the best thing for HIM to make him go through that embarrassment. ~HAP
  5. Although, if vpw was correct (and he wasn't, IMO) that suicide was always a devil spirit, and given that devil spirits even exist (which I don't know), vpw might have had a "bigger" devil spirit and could have in fact "commanded" the suicide. ahhhh a whole new scenario. ~HAP?
  6. You will take advice from unsavvy men but not unsavvy women?
  7. There is nothing I am disagreeing with you about except that the phone call apparently was NOT from a girl in the compound, but from a mentally ill, grown woman in Colorado Springs, CO with a history of prank phone calls, and NO involvement with the organization or "church". This does not change the facts of what goes on with the group, but it does raise some questions about what precipitated the current investigation and whether it has proceeded legally and properly.
  8. I still think placing a key in one of those realtor locks would help those chronic locker outers. Its what I have done for rental houses and beats the heck out of having to go over and let the renter in. You can change the access code to the lock whenever you want. As I recall the good button ones are about $15 at HomeDepot/Lowes.
  9. omigosh Linda, I woulda done that for no more than $40, and I would have given $20 of that to get some big hunk of a kid to use HIS shoulder! LOL
  10. Safari for Windows does seem to load faster than Firefox for me, but the nanoseconds of time don't mean that much to me. I like that it comes loaded with googlemaps, wiki and youtube on the toolbar, but I imagine those can be put up on firefox as well. (or removed from safari likely enough if you want). I have been playing with both and it seems to be mostly a matter of where I am going and what I want to do. Getting used to Firefox hiding images and links until I remember to click on that yellow bar drives me nuts. Some day I will look to see how to turn that off. ~HAP

    Stop the presses!

Since this is still in the Open forum. here is a site with about equally as many pro and con articles on the subject. I have not yet followed the links in it much, but it looks promising for those who want to hear both sides rationally. http://climatedebatedaily.com/ ~HAP

    Stop the presses!

Ooooops Ron try again- Your first article (which appears to me to be tongue in cheek- and not supporting your naysayer premise) says: Another link (http://www.nytimes.com/2006/07/27/opinion/...amp;oref=slogin WITHIN that article speaks of the oft misreported "antarctic ice thickening" squabbles the other "R-named" poster has been so fond of repeating: The actual author of the study mischaracterized by Crichton and also Mz. Coulter goes on to say in that article: - Peter Doran (was the author)Hide your head all you want, but I would think, given your view on the subject that you would WANT the US press to bury this story! teeheee Try reading it again, and follow the links within it this time to see what is being said, maybe? I understand the headline is rather misleading. ~HAP ummm just who are the lemmings NOW!! LOLLOLOLOLOLOL (by the way, I kind of remember the attribute attributed to lemmings is actually false too, like your argument against global warming trends, but I am not gonna bother looking it up) -edited to correct spelling of Crichton~ ~Cordially, HAP

    Looking for Items

well, hopefully you made some contacts with people you had not been in touch with. That can be fun
  14. point of clarification- Colorado City (where this polygamist group is) is NOT in Colorado. It is in Arizona.
  15. I would stay away from Schlage locks and stick with Kwikset. Most Schlages will let you open the locked door from the inside but the door will remain locked so if you go out and shut the door you are locked out. Kwiksets do not do that, when you go out, the door unlocks. The new Kwikset locks are also labeled "Smartkey and "bumpproof" (you can do a search on bumping locks to find out what that is), but the Smartkey is pretty cool. You can actually rekey the lock in about 30 seconds, to any kwikset key, which lets you give a key to a service person while they need access to your house for a job. When they have finished their job, you can rekey it back to your original and the other person no longer can get in. Another idea is to get one of those realtor locks and fasten it to the gas meter, railing or somewhere accessible. I hate them on the door itself as they get in the way and are tacky. This would be the cheapest "fix". ~HAP
  16. THIS was a quake: March 27, 1964 started at 5:36 pm AK time. Under the measurement rules at the time it was 8.6 on the Richter scale, but they now use a different scale and it is rated as 9.2 on today's scale, the third most violent quake in historical records in the world. As I recall, it lasted about 5 minutes where I was, but it seemed like an eternity for 13 year old. My first thought was that the Russians had dropped a bomb on us. scary enough, but then when I looked out the window and saw the ground rolling and heaving in waves, it kinda made me hold my breath. The aftershocks often measuring in excess of 5 (Richter) went on for weeks if I recall correctly. As I recall we were instructed (afterwards) to stand in exterior doorways, or to stand with our back to the wall of the bathroom where the plumbing fixtures are located. Fine lotta good that info coming late did. I desperately held onto my mom's favorite Japanese lamp in the picture window to keep it from falling and breaking. Oh well, at least I claimed the lamp from the estate a few years ago so it was worth it. My brother was brave, and held the glass doors of the china hutch closed to save the figurines and german porcelain. Mom freaked out when she came around the corner and saw the silverware chest sliding back and forth above his head. The noise I remember is the crash crash crash sounds of the baby food jars falling out of the kitchen cabinet breaking on the counter and floor. My baby sister slept peacefully through it all in her crib (next to a plumbing wall). Going into Anchorage a few weeks later we were treated to scenes like the above where whole streets sank 12-20 feet. It was a devastating jolt to the eyes. My father was awarded the Legion of Merit medal by the Army for his work developing, coordinating, and overseeing the plan to rebuild Seward. He never mentioned this to us, as to him it was just his job, but in looking through his discharge papers upon his death, I found the medal and the associated documents. Every quake I have felt since that time was mild. 9.2 on the scale is equivalent to approximately 31 gigatons of TNT. The midwest's 5.5 is like 171 kilotons. Still, I am sure it could be quite disturbing when unexpected. Glad you are all safe. ~HAP
  17. why would I want to do something to erase my character lines? Wisdom is manifest in those lines my mother said. They show who you are and they are distinctly yours. I'll pass on it, thanks. Tax software ...

woohoo! I got done with daylight left! Highly unusual for me ever since I stopped needing the info for the FAFSA forms when the kids were in college. I went again with Turbotax this year, although in the past I swore I would try something different. MY reason for thinking about a change was that I felt their interview left much to be desired and left me feeling less than confident that I had stuff right. I stayed with it this time simply because I was pressed for time and have used their layout for 8 years so I did not want to need a learning curve with something new. THAT SAID..... I was extremely happy with this year's program and felt they vastly improved the navigation through their program. The interview left me feeling as confident as one could be, and there seemed to be an ease to going through it and being able to get more complete answers this year to questions that develop when you have changing tax situations as I have had with buying and selling some realestate and closing my mother's estate. So I will return next year to Turbotax. I expect however that what governs the value of any tax program to a particular person is how it works with their particular scenario, so all I can say is this one worked for me and another might be better for someone else. ANYWAY-------who has the wine to celebrate the deadline being met? Hope you all are well. ~HAP

    Tax software ...

Turbotax has always had different levels, its just that they have more levels than before. I have always used the Home and Business version, and it does include the state return. I am a self-employed sole proprietor
  20. if you don't refresh the page, or leave the page and return to it, it does not change on your screen. nothing to do with firewall I think, but I am not a techguru so maybe someone else has a better answer. Anyway, back to you topic. Dot, MOST transactions on the net go thru without a hitch. Even though the only reviews we found were negative, the fact that there were not bunches of them indicates SOMe people were happy. Personally,at this point i wouldn't bother pulling the money out, but that may just be me. If the company stopped the transaction they stopped it, if they didn't, they will send you a vacuum. (Whether it works or not seemed to be the question). As I said if LOTS of people had been screwed by them, you would have found lots more complaints.

    Amazon

Seems like a good idea, I wish I used Amazon more, but I will remember the option when I do.
  22. Dot- I googled factorydirectsuperstoreDOTcom (with a . intead of the word dot) and found these. Pricegrabber- 0 reviews (unusual for a company that has been around awhile) Then I found 1 review at: http://www.thethingsiwant.com/site/factory...superstore.com/ it was extremely negative as were the 2 at: http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Facto...rect_Superstore All of these reviews were pretty old, but does not sound too promising. Look around more in google if you want, I only went partway down the first page.
  23. look for "bundle packages" with either whoever provides your landline at home, or your cable TV. Well, look at both if they are not the same provider. Pit one against the other for the best price and see how long they will guarantee that price. I now get phone, cable and internet for preyty much what I was paying for only phone and cable before. I think I could do even better, but I like having one bill for all three, for convenience if nothing else. ~HAP
