  1. Love...is a good thing. Tomorrow is The Day for us. 36 years, and counting. 3/27. I've never quite understood how the image of the husband (or wife I guess but usually it's the guy) forgetting the anniversary got so ingrained in modern society. We were talking about it and can't remember a year when either one of us "forgot" about it. That would be weird. But I guess it could sneak up on me, that's happened a time or two. Maybe it's because it would be so weird that its makes for such outlandish comedy. Dunno. I've been working on a song, a poem really, for a long time. Part of it is from a card that my wife gave me the day we got married, so I guess I've been toying with the idea of it being part of a song for that long and until this last week it never quite came together. I don't know why but it's come to be one of those things that I keep stored in the back of my brain and fiddle with all the time. I've even posted parts in my Signature, so I could see what it looked like. I asked a few years ago and Ted Ferrel through down an entire songs worth of lyrics 'like that' (and that's Ted) and I think a line or two of that and what ChattyK-ski might have posted at that time are rolling around in it. It finally fell into place. I'm still fiddling with it but the idea is finally in words. They're not incredibly anything but they're what I would want to say about our marriage. I ended up titling it "How Could I have Known" and this seemed a nice place to put it, if you don't mind I will put it here. How Could I Have Known If all of the time In all the world Were in my hand, please understand The moment I'd relive again and again is The one when we first said 'Hello'. It was so very long ago That we first met and said "Hello". Little did I know that day That you would steal my heart away. How could I have known The way the years would pass I only knew for sure My love would last Through every year, but grow so fast? How could I have known what you'd mean to me? How could I have seen the woman that you'd be? The girl I loved so easily. You were everything and more to me. How could I have known there'd be so much more? Now, if all our tomorrows were never to come I'd be happy with all that we've done. Loving you is The best thing I've done. I'll always know loving you Is the best thing I've done.

Yah, good idea to try them plugged in. See how they sound through an amplifier or P.A. Also get them to show you what kind of range the tone adjustment has, if there is any. My Takamine has a bass, midrange and treble slider adjustment in addition to the volume. Normally it doesn't need much added or taken out and I keep them at the middle "notch", and then depending on the volume I'm playing at I may fiddle with them a little, pull out a little bass and treble, add a little midrange. Just depends on the overall sound. You're rockin' too Chatty! Found a pretty cool program, although not directly guitar related, it's close if you want to record and have a decent rhythm track. It's made by Toontrack, EZDrummer I've been using a couple different drum sources, my deck's percussion tracks (Yamaha, and sound good) and a standalone program named "PC Drummer Pro". I like it, occasionally will add some things from Acid Loops, if needed. This EZDrummer has a pretty big library of sounds, and runs by loading into a VST program (like Sonar or Steinberg Cubase) as a VST plug in, then opening up as an instrument. When you do their interface opens up, looking like a drum kit, with the instruments laid out on the screen. From there you can pull different kits and styles and drill down to specific patterns. There's a lot of good ones "as is", and the adjustments seem pretty usable to shape the sound of the drum kit. From there you click and drag the rhtyhm track into a track on your VST program and start building the track from there. That's about as far as I've gotten in looking at it, although there seems to be quite a bit more you can do with it. It's always a challenge to find quick starting programs that allow you to get to work easily. This program seems to have a lot to offer. And if you look down under the "Recording Notes" section on that page, you may see a name familiar to you, maybe not. But either way, it's worth checking out. Under 200 bucks, not bad.
  3. Jonny Lingo, Man of Intrigue.... I had a feeling if we kept at it long enough, this thread would become the Hello thread. And now it is! Maybe it was never really about "goodbye" at all. Wow. So much to ponder. Well, since this thread is a magnet for illumination, I'd be crazy to not pipe in a lux or two of my own. GS is IMO, a wonderful board for certain things. It allows for free expression of ideas and opinions, in that a poster can post whatever they think, feel, know or would like to know. Whether or not any other poster agrees or not isn't really the point, to me. That another poster would disagree with anything I'd post doesn't constitute a reduction of the free expression. As far as the Guitar Thread, it represents one of the purposes of GS that's been created by the people that come here, and their interests, namely to participate in a shared community of ideas and interests with other people. It's part of the evolution of the board, IMO. If that goes away I probably would too. I have little to contribute on Way related topics at this point in my life. The board discussions on Way related topics is what the board is based on, of course. If that's any kind of a prerequisite for participation the board will probably lose me, which wouldn't be the end of the world but it is nice to particpate where I do. At any rate, Jonny Lingo is ... back? or...is he.....

Howdy J Lingo! Welcome. The Ibanez advice posted 'sall good. Ibanez makes some good guitars in lots of price ranges. Browsing around I found this one that's about that price - an AEL50SERLV Is it similar to this one? The way you've described it sounds like it's a soild guitar. As Satori described you have to try different guitars of any model to see how they're made and play. At any price there can be variances that would make one have specific problems. Usually the advantages and "good" things about a model are pretty consistent as long as there's nothing wrong with that specific guitar you're playing and trying. Sounds like you like that one, so I think you know the answer!

Morning fine people! Nice links satori, enjoyed them! Getting caught up now...
  6. Morning! Congratulations to all those celebrating anniversaries, and encouragement to those who look forward to a marriage with someone they love. Technically, my wife and I didn't meet "in" TWI so I hesitated to post on this fine thread. We have been married since we were young and are about to celebrate our 36th aniversary. All of the time we were involved in the Way we were married. We have two children, now 25 and 23. Everything we've done in our adult lives has been together, married. We married because we were in love and wanted to be together for life. I was talking to someone about this this week. When I asked my wife to marry me it was "forever", and at that point if you'd asked me if we'd be together in 36 years I'd have said "Of course! I love her!" But at 20 you don't know what year 2 or 12 or 32 is going to be like. You have a plan but the plan boils down to something like this in reality, I think - live and love today and live and love tomorrow. That's 1 + 1 = 2. Ya got 2 days now. Then do it again and again and again. To get to day 12,236, or any day, you just live each day as it comes and make it as good as you can and look forward to more. Being friends, close, supportive to each other makes it work I think. I'm her biggest fan. If something's good for her, it's good for me, is the way I see it and vice versa. However a couple wants to define it if they marry for "love" and make that their industry they'll be happy with the result. I'm still crazy about her and after 36 years with me she's got to be crazy, so it seems to be a match made in heaven.

Star of the Show was a great tune, RG! PDSTRO (whew! that name) were great, sang their butz off back 'in the day'. Had such a tight blend. I agree it is nice to have that in our past, something that was good, meaningful. Having played since I was 10, first "gig" when I was 13, it means a lot to see my kids play now, others. And to be doing things myself now. If you'd asked me then if I'd be doing this now, I would have laughed. But at this point, it's the only way it could have worked out, y'know? I'm happy. And happy to be happy. :) I'll be off and on over the next week, so if I don't show much don't hold it against me. Carry on with the style and class you all know so well. I'll be back.

    The Wave and The Nod

The Wave, the Nod and now, the Fingers. Double Digits! I'm glad this topic resonated with so many. Thanks for all your responses, they've been great to read and digest. That movie "Pay It Forward" - great example. The idea of doing something big, small, something that has an immediate positive effect on someone. It's an honor system on the road. Will it mean the favor is ever returned - to anyone? We never know, but one of the things that strikes me about it is that it might be the only way to generate that kind of forward activity. No one's made to do it. Sometimes we can't do it. Other times it would be ill-advised to do it. But under some circumstances it's the only way traffic can move along at any reasonable pace - there has to be cooperation and this kind isusually without even an exchange of words. If we have to fight our way, tooth and nail, is our capacity to think and act beyond that stimulated? When one good act is performed, does it encourage another and another? We seem to be saying it does. That's cool.

Welcome Joe! LP's! Vinyl! Yikes! Got a stack of "albums" myself. I've only experimented with a couple things in converting to digital format. Although they have their own characteristic sound in the original format, the ease of storing and getting what you want when you want it is increased dramatically in the digital/"computer" format. Speaking of which I found this link that describes the basics of doing that if anyone's looking to do so - Bob Rankin describes the steps here. I have a 16 track recording deck I've used to do some, which has a 20 gig hard drive, but the drive has other things on it and fills up quickly. Recording directly to a PC "on the fly" is probably the simplest way to do it, although I wouldn't recommend recording an entire album side in one sweep as the resulting file will be humongous and difficult to edit. There's free downloadable software to do it. With a couple cables, turntable and a PC it's very doable. Any experience with this, Bluzeman, or ... ?

Welcome, Rainbowsgirl - I think you'll find some Norah fans here, and here's a link to Norah's site if you need it! Her guitarist Adam Levy is a great player. Select BAND on her site and there's a writeup about him. He's got the Dream Gig, so that may account for his somewhat ecstatic attitude live. I've seen her with my wife and family a few times, and she's always been great. Which reminds me of James Burton, the guy playing electric Telecaster on all the old Ricky Nelson tunes from the "Ozzie and Harriet Show". As an accompaniest he really made great work in just a few bars of a solo. Just came across his site recently.
  12. I find your words comforting Friscoguy05, in several ways. I don't really need the comfort directly, in regards to CES or whatever all of this is about but there are times I do, no question about it. When the equation is - if any member hurts or functions inappropriately ALL members suffer - I have to consider what that really means. Members hurt frequently. Functioning is inappropriate regularly. Undesirabele, yes but a reality, yes. There are different ways to view it - here's a few: If the goal is to be at a "100 per cent" flawless, all good stuff, and the criteria is whether any member hurts or functions inappropriately, then... We'll never be at 100 per cent because that undesirable reality is, well, reality. If the goal is to be "100 per cent" a body, flaws and all, plus the good stuff, and the criteria is the family relationship of born again children of God, "sons of God", Christians then... We're always that because we're always a family, that's our relationship. If the goal is to be "100 per cent" a body, flaws and all, plus the good stuff, and we're a family in a relationship with Christ who helps everyone to grow, in their relationship with Him and God and we all do what we can when we can as best we can... We can always be doing that. It's not even really a "goal", as there's no striving to be a family. That's a done deal. There's effort to do good but we know that isn't always going to happen. We are in the relationship we are and have the capacity we do as God's planned it. That's the way I try to look at everything overall as much as I can. To me it isn't so much that there aren't any winners in the end. The overall effect is very difficult to grasp. To people who know nothing about you or I, or say CES, what we do is said to have an effect on them, but what is it? What's lost? What's gained when "everything's right?" Lost when nearly everything's wrong? Between people everything will never be right if the criteria is that no one makes a mistake and nothing ever goes wrong. I would say one of the most powerful abilities we have in our capacity is to help one another. That's not easy, especially when those who need it don't want it or think they need it. How do we function in that kind of environment? I think that by doing what we can do best - look to God, the instruction we have from the bible, our best common sense and consideration and using the spiritual capacities we have as a body that always work - prayer and a reliance on Christ and God to work within each member. They have a job to do too, and it's the powerful energizing blood that runs through the body that keeps it healthy. Let the supply come from the source. There are simply some things we can't do for or with each other at times, other times we can. It appears to me but we can always let the spirit of God that binds us all together provide what's needed, let it do for each member the best it can do for them. If we're all together somewhere down the line, that's the way God wants it. I really think that the capacity to pefectly view all of this life in proper perspective is possible, but doesn't happen anywhere near as much as we'd like it to. Again - the capacity to understand, forgive and handle everything all at once in our brains and hearts isn't within us. It's going to require honesty on our parts and God to provide what only He can.

  15. I was thinking this morning on my drive in to work about how little things make such a big difference sometimes. It got me to thinking - how a little thing to me can often be a huge thing to someone else. What happened that got this train of thought stoked was...traffic. I live in a small community, with a few major traffic arteries running north and south, east and west, divided by smaller veins of neighborhood streets, homes, stores. Come 7-ish every morning, we fill them up with our cars, heading out to work, school, breakfast, wherever. My commute consists of a couple turns to get out of our neighborhood, and then straight south, hang a Rosco due west, and in five minutes I'm at work. 12 minutes normal commute time. On the way there's several cross streets, and as I hit the lights and stop along my way I see cars waiting at the cross streets, looking to make that turn into the main road I'm on. Waiting. Waiting, edging in looking for a break in traffic, stopping. Backing up, edging out. Traffic has gotten thick enough that once we all get out there we back up at every light, it's pretty much like any town, I'm sure you know the drill. When I'm the one trying to get out on the main road and get going I know exactly how it feels - "Is anyone, ANYone going to let me in here, pul-eeze?!" All I need is one person to open up a space and let me skeeter across the lane and take my place in line with everyone else. I'll be good, just let me in! What I need is The Wave and The Nod. That's that glorious moment when one person slows down and looks at you and waves you "in" with a nod. Maybe even a smile. Or a snarl, whatever. It's the Open Space and the time to fill it that's what you need. At it's best it's a moment of True Friendship, a non-spoken exchange of humanity and love, shared for all to see. For the Waver it's a Gift of Road Love, the real deal. To the Wavee, it's like a rush of cool fresh air on a hot muggy day. Thanks! Way to go! Yeah, right on! Love ya man! Have a nice day! Have a GREAT day! And we're on our way, together, brethren and sistern on the Road of Life, CD's playing, radios talking, coffee swishing. Life is good. We're driving now. This morning I DID It and man did it make me feel good. It always does when I become the Road Warrior With a Heart, toss back my shield and helmet and stare across that Great Lane Divide into the eyes of another bleary eyed soldier and Do It - give them The Wave and The Nod. Come - come brother, join me sister, take your place, here - take mine. Together we drive, divided we sit. Come - let us motor together... It's silly, I know. 5 minutes of the news on the radio and I know there's bigger fish frying everywhere I look. I got Big Fish of my own on the line. But this is my world, where I live, what I do. How I drive is who I am. It starts my day "out there", everyday. It's my first chance every morning to greet the rest of the world. I love doing it, givin' the Nod, and feel small when I don't. "I'm in a hurry, I got business, I'm here-you're not. Hope that works out for you but I gotta keep moving or the Mom behind me in the SUV with 5 kids packed is going to shear my rear. That's it, we're shearing rears out here, and if not mine, the one in front of me is next. Gotta go! Good luck!" The more I do it, the grander I feel. Silly, yes. But it leaks out into other things. That parking place, that door, that person with their hands full, the shelf that's too high for someone to reach. All the silly little things I deal with everyday, all day. Sometimes it seems like - that's most of what my day is made of - a lot of little silly things. Add a dash of consideration and a splash of humor and they add up to a nice package come bedtime, or can. It's worth a shot anyway. Next thing I know I'll be making room for cyclists.
  16. The most relevance is to those who might be in the precarious position of still being affected by this kind of stuff, still in the CES circle of influence. To those of us who aren't it's not an issue, Momentous is a rumor of a pimple on the butt of a long lost pig. To those who may be pressured to consider alternative solutions to the message of Christ, it can be made to sound like a good thing. "Try it, you just might like it". People can like whatever they want. There's enough stuff out about Momentous to warrant discussion and repeated debate if that's what it takes to keep the pro's and cons on the table, i.e. "You just might not like it". Or give it a rest, keeping in mind that the poor ol' CES people will probably find something else next year that will be the bright twinkle in their eye at that time. Will it stop? I don't know, the pattern seems to be to keep finding these kinds of things, God knows where. Is there a catalogue for second-rate self-help courses somewhere I don't know about? I think it's an indication of wrong direction when churches become habitual seekers of alternative methods to the simple and powerful reality of "the risen Christ", that is, when Christian life isn't what people think it should amount to and they feel the need to dismantle and reassemble the components in ways that will bring them satisfaction and fulfillment. "Success" in Christianity can't be artificially manufactured. Well, it can be, but it's not Christianity. The essence and core message of Christianity is a risen savior, Jesus Christ, leading and filling the life of His followers in the here and now in a real tangible way that leads the people to an ever growing and appreciated relationship with God. Applying that to life in general is what Christianity and Christian pursuits is all about. Encouraging people in that direction does not require what Momentous is described as offering. It would be childish and silly if it wasn't for the damage reported that it does. But maybe it is time to give it a rest. There's enough information and cross linked pages that if anyone does a little research online for themselves, they'll hear both sides of the story. The "other side" of the story has certainly been given an airing. I hope people find it.

Good question Dooj. If it sounds like a boo, shouts like a boo, looks a boo and has oo, I guess it's a boo. Or could be a boo. "Genuine suspicion". "AAAaaahhhhhhh----choooooooooo!" At that rate, you could sneeze at a game and get booted out, by mistake. We may see Instant Replays of crowd reactions someday. Lawyers will love this, as it will open the door for much litigation. The courts will be stuffed to overflowing with Boo-Suits. Movies will be made about Booers who bottom out, turn to drugs, lose their families and jobs and then rise back up against all odds. Sly Stallone will make his "final" Rocky movie and call it "Rock XV - Bad to the Booin'". Video Games will appear with Parental Discretion Warning labels based on their Boo content. Politicians will need to define their candidacies by where they stand on the Boo. Past offenses will need to be explained - "I did boo once, yes, but it was youthful indiscretion and I didn't throw anything". This could change everything.

Dooj - try this homespun course, at Truefire.com Happy Traum, that's his name, is the instructor, he's been around the world of music for a long time. Might be a good place to start, the course comes with 2 DVD's. Live instruction, a teacher, is hard to beat. Local music stores usually have a line on some people that could do that. Consider a couple-three one-on-one lessons with someone they can sit with and get started. Truefire is a great little site, for all kinds of guitar music. I've gotten a fair amount of music from them in download form. They're legit. Sounds like fun times ahead!!!
