Well, somewhere between his influences there are areas that would fall in the metaphysical field of uh, philosophy, whatever. I don't like the way a lot of these labels are used and defined, often with extreme bias favoring the ones defining them at the moment but that's another topic. Occult, metaphysical, philosophical - these terms have very different meanings depending on who applies them, but.... Two people that he often spoke about in the earlier days were Glenn Clark and Rufus Mosely. Both were fairly outta the box in terms of traditional conservative western theology - well, certainly Lutheran and/or Methodist. They're worth reading about in this context if you're not familiar with them. Clark was a great believer in the power of prayer and pursued it from the perspective of the individual's focus and intent as having a direct impact on the outcomes of what was prayed for. Clark's influences in ministry outreach is still felt today, heard a very conservative minister reference him a few years ago, who's retired and works in some pastoral training ministries overseas and he suddenly brought Clark up in reference to India and his own thoughts on western Christians reaching people in the middle east. Mosely, very much a "mystic" who was often overcome by a kinda serious "divine buzz" by the sounds of it, even in public activities. He was very committed to having the personal experience of being in the "presence of God", some sort of spiritual divine state he definitely felt was ideal. When I first visited the Way in late 1969, and 1970, it was a very different environment than what it became in later years. I've posted on this before. The "Sunday Night Services" at the Way Nash were a real hoot, he'd get going, people'd be amening and yeah'ing! and stomping when they got going, all through his teaching segments. He'd get so excited physically his hair'd be flying, bible thumping away, loud and kickin' it. "Dorothy and Rhoda" would crank on the keys too. He'd drill right in on people and it was like dropping dime right and left, he seemed to know what was going on minute to minute and how people were responding. Given how the Way soon was to become - rather judgmental,, stuffy and conservative in it's own world, it's interesting that these people (and others, like "Bishop K. C. Pillai") were influences. Occult? Black arts? Dunno.

2011 is upon us and I wanted to wish everyone here and yonder a great new year. Time being what it is there was no way to get from there to here without the time in between so it seems about right from this point, now. Logged in and I can see the page in WW's link, which lists those topics. I always go back to browsers - often an older version won't render functionality the same. I'm in Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3 I don't use Explorer but I believe it's at 10 point something or other. I'd make sure your browser's updated and do the usual Window Shuffle - close out, reopen, get any updates by using the check for update link in the top menu "Help" section and then try again. Other possibilities - a cached page can reload so slow that it won't open up and appear to be blank. So do the Windows Cha Cha and clear out cookies and delete history and then make sure your options are set to "always check for new pages" or whatever IE says - that way your always getting a reloaded page. Or try it again. Might work this time!

sporrans - trippy! A long time ago in a far away place, well not that far but definitely a long time ago I learned to do the "Highland Fling". Part of the good Catholics diocese educational program to have world dancing as part of a weekly class. I loathed it at the time, the unwieldy couplings of boys and girls learning how to interact in a programmed social event every - danged - week - of every - danged - year of 8 - danged - years of elementary education. But the Highland Fling was kinda crazy as I recall. Peace!

Ah, the mysteries and histories of Christmas! And a most merry one to all! waysider, that's about how I address the seasonal greets myself. Christmas does seem to be a mix of many customs rolled into one to accomodate a diverse group. Possibly then as now, merchants embraced the opportunity to sell some more tunics and sandals. "Move the cards and the pottery from Egypt! 25 % off - red tag 'em, the Spring lines get ordered next month!" Politicians who wanted to keep the peace and what better way than to birth the Prince of Peace - who doesn't love a baby? (well, that one guy) Memorialized forever in quiet slumber surrounded by loving parents, visitors from afar bearing gifts ("...diaper service! You rock! We love you!!!"), shepherds and of course, sheep. Outside and in days to come the world awaits but tonight the stars twinkle, the plants align and for a few hours it's all family, all love and all good. With family and friends, the unexpected but warmly embraced guests, a hot meal, some selected beverages and a good night's sleep and you've got a really nice time.

Hello catski. All of the above and then some. I always took the Way's wedding ceremony as beautiful in it's simplicity with room to personalize it. Weddings are for the wedd-ee's, and sharing the event of the vows with their family and friends. It's hard not to have a civil, decent time at a wedding but if anyone can wreck a good thing, it's going to be the Way. Still and all, it can be a good time. Given the Way's sad trail of tears in regards to marriage vows and the "sanctify" of marriage though - I dunno. Wayfers get married in threesomes - bride, groom and "the ministry". That makes for a crowded bed. It would really depend a lot on who the people were, for me. Course I'm not getting any invitations and don't' expect to soon, so for this go 'round it's probably not going to be an issue. On face value, all things being equal and more or less about like that - if they were friends, I'd send a card and a gift and wish them well and possibly suggest a dinner together somewhere nice after the honeymoon. I wouldn't grace the place with the imminence of me or my wife's presence.

Yeh, the indirect lending setup with an auto dealership could be used facilitate their fleet auto transactions, would be my guess but that's only a guess. General note: not to you TAO or this thread specifically but if someone goes to this information they'll see that part of the public record includes an email address for the credit union. That's for their business related communication and inquiries. The purpose is clearly and plainly not intended as a means to communicate with the Way on other matters. It should not be used to blast the Way with non-business or non-transaction related communications. Doing anything like that will be wrong and will surely get the sender in hot water and rightly so. I'm just sayin' this as a personal disclaimer - if someone tries to use it to for other reasons they'll be ignored I'm sure - there's no reason for the credit union to respond to non-related communication and if it's negative stuff they'd be well within their ethical and legal rights to take steps to put a stop to it. This information is public and didn't just show up out of the blue. But I don't want to be implicated if somebody gets a bee in their bonnet going and thinks it's funny to bomb their email address with junk. I would never do that, encourage that or suggest anyone do such a thing. It ain't right. . Anyhoo I just felt the need to write that, assuming it's common sense and to clearly state my own position - happy holidays! :)

Like that? Try THIS ONE. Clicking through this will give you lots of public information about the Way CU, including the board members, etc. etc. Etc. I saw that too TAO - in a Way world where there are no coinkidinks, no accidents and no "luck" - one wonders what they thought of that number. That's a lot of 6's. Their investment strategy? That would be their business but I'm sure there's paths out there to follow that would give a view into it if anyone had the time and energy. (I'm running out of both but just sayin') Performance is up! for the last 10 years - it appears as the Way sold it's properties and what-not they socked it away. If their approach was safe 'n' steady - a good idea for a credit union - it makes sense that they'd have grown and not shrunk.

It certainly could Linda. It doesn't have to be one qualifier, can be many and like your example could be extended to include a diverse group. If it was only for Wayfers - say, grads of whatever their teaching series is these days, "regular" attendees of a fellowship and financial supporters of the Way - then it would be a defined group. And while the Way claims no "members", that's really an echo of a distant past we know - yet, something like a CU would create a like for like in that situation, by defining the CU as their own group and then opening "membership" to it in the CU. It's semantics at that point, always an active playground. It's just interesting if membership opened up to include non-"participants" of the Way - that's the only way someone could get a loan from them, by being a member and that would include various rights and whatever services are provided. It wouldn't be exclusively the Way then. It would be in their interests to have a larger group like that as I'm sure there's local expertise and most importantly, money, to bring to the party. But it's at odds with their closed-corporation mentality. One of the most basic benefits of a CU is in the pooling of resources amongst a group to leverage their financial strength. It's probably one of the easiest and simplest methods to realize what the Way's taught as it's vision of the early "church", sharing "abundantly" amongst themselves. It provides a tangible conduit for financial services and advise to be distributed in a user friendly environment where the profit motive in the bank isn't the primary driver. Based on the reports online I read, they're only source of income is the return on investment of the assets. No loans or activity to speak of, unless I missed something. (very possible).

Can't argue with that Twinky. I'm just saying - on average you won't see the CEO or President of a company as the head of the CU when it's formed around the membership of their company. If anyone looks up "The Way" under this site http://www.ncua.gov/ they can see the public report on their credit union, including current # of membership, who's the manager of it and their total assets. You can also get reports by clicking on links on the left. It's public data, nothing hidden about it. They seem to have performed ok, with some dips in the 2009-2010 period which wouldn't be unusual for investment performance. I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd guess that by the numbers - if they have 973 members and assets of 12.5 mill, rounding up to a 1,000 and dividing - it would sound like if the assets are the results of accounts (no active loans show) and investments, they've done okay. But I have to wonder if the average member has 10-12,000 dollars in their account, or if it's mostly investment or if it's mostly the Way's assets. Dunno. They don't seem to have done much by way of performance over the last couple years, little up, little down, a little down currently. Overall, about average? I guess it it's just for the convenience of doing their own business it's right that it would be pretty flat.

Hmmm. I do believe Chock that most employers offer direct deposit of payroll as a service to employees, and the charge is paid for by the employer. Nothing's "free" of course, but that means there's no transacton charge back to the employee. There are also no delays typically caused by bank selection when it comes to electronic transfers. I know the "Bank of the Way Woods" would be closer than say, the Bank of Wapak, or whatever but today it doesn't really matter. So I'm surprised to hear there was a delay and any charge for the transaction if a person banked outside the Credit Union. As an employer the Way would pay whatever charges there would be for the transaction. Also, if Credit Unions are formed within a company, the company's head officers would typically not be on the board of directors (which are elected by the members) of the credit union and although they as members could be they usually aren't - it's run as a separate entity outside the normal business trade of the company and the relationship that forms the common bond that forms the legal basis for the existence of the Credit Union. That's interesting Notawayfer - Geography is a relationship that could be the basis for a Credit Union - so local farmers in Auglaize-Shelby County could get loans from the Way's Credit Union - if that's the how the Way set up with federal regulators when forming their Credit Union. So the Way's Credit Union would have had to be established with that purpose and intent, and then accept memberships, opened accounts with fees and minimum deposit requirements met, and then extended loans. Which makes me wonder if the "farmers" were Wayfers...? and the relationship defining the Way's CU was based on participation in the Way, rather than on the geographical relationship....? Because in theory if it was geo based, any and all could apply as members if they met the membership requirements - they could also participate in the yearly board meetings, election of board members, etc. etc. The "interest" to "non-believers" is BS - if the bible is the basis for that then the same parts of the bible used outline extending loans to "believers" (O.T. stuff) without imposing interest charges, or usury. (which the Way must have cut out of their bibles then) I doubt federal regulation would allow for a prejudicial application of deposit and loan policies based on religious affiliation if the CU is formed around a community relationship. In essence the core group would be penalizing itself, extending benefits to some but not others - these guys pay interest, these guys don't. Or - these guys get loans, but these other guys are highly "advised" not to apply for any. That doesn't wash on an even playing field. Scratching my head even more now....interesting topic! shortfuse, don't mean to derail or distract. (*And Wayfer lurkers, don't come after me cuz I'm asking questions - I'm not inferring that the Way is doing anythng illegal. I'm sure the Way dotted their I'S and crossed their T'S when doing this. But there may be more to it and different issues to it than are commonly known. I'm just askin' and if anyone out there can speak directly to this I'm sure it would be welcome).

Interesting stuff - "I believe that loans were given to those CU members in the surrounding area as well. My wife and I were members, but didn't take out a loan. I remember in the initial phase there was a standing amount of 40k for any home purchase in the area as long as you had the down payment amount. The Way wanted to scoop up real estate in the surrounding county - quite a few people put together deals to get homes around the area. A lot of them were very basic mid-western hmmm...construction but there were some decent deals I remember seeing (lived there throughout 1973-80). It kind of sucked though because if you had parents who'd give you a down, then you could step into your own home with nothing more than a signature. The Way knew if and when you moved - and everyone eventually moved - they'd either be able to take over the home, loan, rent or resell. I can guarantee you the long term goal wasn't to see people have homes of their own, it was to expand the Way's influence locally by having lots of Wayfers own property. A CU that doesn't serve a common interest amongst it's members isn't in compliance with the spirit of the laws that govern CU's. That can get technical but there has to be 1. a common relationship that brings the members together and 2. shared benefits amongst the members. I guess if you're getting direct deposit that's a benefit buuuuuut, seems kind of a stretch if it's just collecting fees but not offering services of any kinds and doesn't give loans.

Credit unions are non-profits, and earn $ by taking membership fees, deposits and loan interest, and investing them. Returns go back as dividends to the members - lower loan rates, low cost or free services like checking, credit card, etc. If The Way CU doesn't give loans or issue credit cards, they could exist to offer savings accounts, checking services and debit cards. If the investment strategy is sound they should be stable and show a + return on investments. (last couple years have been admittedly tough). I've been a member of a credit union for years that has been rated #1 or in the top 5 country wide for years, and is actually one of the-standard bearers for CU's nationally. Their performance is outstanding and they've lowered rates for secured and unsecured loans - even in the last two years. No offense to any Wayfers but I don't see that they'd be all that good at having a CU of their own. They could probably do the basics pretty well but if they're not offering loans or using the resources communally - why bother? I'd be interested in knowing what they do offer - financial services? Help to set up IRAS's, retirement accounts? Trusts? Financial advice? Tax services?If they don't have anyone there with the background or interest in managing and participating (CU's are self-governed) they may be SOL and be in neutral.

Ditto to that Pop Tucket. I've seen FaceBake do this before, whatever the reason. I've added "friends" to my account and had them drop. There was someone who couldn't get added, did, fell out, got added again, fine till the next time. I read a "secret" ritual from a member of the ToS that described a ritual "vampire" ceremony. It balanced somewhere between abusive and ridiculous, but mostly sounded just silly and would be somewhere at the end of a long list of "things that aren't scarey but try to act skeered so the "vampire" doesn't feel stupid. Then leave".

Three to six months without, Ham? Sounds like a prescription - "don't take this for 3 - 6 months and call me in the morning".... If you're asking have I slavishly devoted myself to speaking in tongues for fear that my brain would fall out if I didn't or would somehow invoke the wrath of Jehovah upon my sorry non-speaking tongue, no. There have been long periods where I didn't, long periods where I have. I think I bought that burial plot in the Way's pond sometime during a long non-stop Excellor's session when it was suddenly foisted upon me that for 10,000 bucks it would be a real deal and since it included my own Memorial Duck - hey, what's not to like? It seemed like a great idea, but I didn't have the money so I signed over title to my car as a down payment. The weird thing is a few weeks after I unceasingly was not speaking in the lingue de m'ange's I realized it may not have been a wise transaction as now I don't have a car. Fortunately once I restart "doing it" I can get back to that place where it all makes wonderful sense again, wonderful sense. Again. Which makes me think - if I speak in tongs will I pick up things faster? Not trying to squeeze anything with that, but one never knows, maybe....maybe.... They're usually not in anyone's best interest but the person doin' the darin, who wants to prove a point or watch the other person go down in flames. And from where I sit I know anyone dumb enough to dare me on anything doesn't know me well enough to know what might come next. Couple quick notes wordwolf - I always appreciate your methodical approach. in regards to the mind, God' speaking to, working in, etc. the mind of man.... First off - I agree that the overall doctrinal position of PFAL on this and the "Great Principle" isn't presented clearly. I'm not interested in defending or denying the Great Principle as a point of doctrine as I don't hold it to be a point of reference for myself, rather to clarify this: If God Almighty can only speak to spirit BECAUSE HE IS SPIRIT, the principle here would be "only spirit can communicate with spirit." If vpw's statement here was correct- "God can only speak to that which he is"- then the only thing spirit can communicate with IS spirit- which means that The Great Principle fails. VPW's teaching on this revolves around 3 basic concepts - 1. "soul", the life of man - 2. "mind", the intellectual, logical ("moral" by another word although there's theology that would argue against me on that) and emotional facility of man - and lastly "spirit", the life of all living things. As I'm sure you know the greek words in the N.T. for each are - psuche, nous, and pneuma, translated into a variety of English words. They aren't defined or translated as tight as that in every usage. In brief, PFAL's position is/was that that the psuche or soul of man was "pheuma", spirit - but "not eternal life spirit" or "pneuma hagion". I believe the phrasing goes "all life is spirit but not all life is eternal life spirit" in the "Advanced" class. For something to be alive requires a "life force" of spirit, pneuma. God is "holy spirit", and the life force (it's an odd phrase but it's used in a lot of literature so hey) of God is eternal, among other things. God "breathed" life into man and man became a "living soul". VPW held that the life of man and the life of God were different however - similar in essence of what they are but different in qualities - and when man had that pneuma of God he shared directly in the life of God. The "nous", the mind of man was taught as part of man's life, the psuche and was therefore hmmm...resident in his soul life. Again, limited in scope but not entirely unlike the life and mind of God. (and I would contend that when the Bible states man was "created in the image of God" it's more than a single component of pneuma hagion - which PFAL also taught - but that's another topic). God's pneuma could be in communication with man's psuche at any time, by God's decision and in a relatively direct way because -well, like for like might express what I see there in PFAL. "Pneuma" is pneuma, albeit not "pneuma hagion" in every instance. Man with pneuma hagion could commune directly with God, "two-way", anytime, all the time, etc. That allows for "God who is spirit" to speak to/teach man's "pneuma" or to "pneuma hagion" or "new life" spirit and for that "creation" in man to speak to man's mind. Put another way, it's spirit talking to spirit throughout the process. That's about the sum of what I understand to have been taught in PFAL - given that the mind of man (the nous) is part of the life or soul of man (psuche) and life is spirit (pneuma), and God is holy spirit (pneuma hagion) the ingredients are all "spirit" or "life" based and therefore share some of the same functionality. Greek philosophy - Plato f'instance saw the mind or "nous" of man as a part of the "life", the psuche of man. There's a lot of different strains of thought on this and not all are completely exclusive of the way these ideas are used in the Bible IMO. I would say today that these ideas aren't as exclusive to each other as modern Christianity (last 100 years or so) have made them out to be in an effort to make all things "5 senses" exclusive to anything "spiritual". Life is a much broader expanse and doesn't fall into these container like categories so easily, IMO. But hey - like the wood carver said , "I take it a whittle at a time".

Who are you talking to here ham and So_C? Are you talking directly to me? Or are you talking to well, I don't know who it would be. Your descriptors here, "dares", assorted "scary" thoughts and propositions and other comments about "three stinking months" - not sure what you're trying to say, if it's to me. I'll try to craft my response appropriately.

" If SIT works " This is a critical point that needs to be defined, "works" and what that means. The Way's teachings indicated that by speaking in tongues one result would be a set of "fruits" that would be produced as a result of speaking in tongues....other benefits, like "spiritual perception", etc. that are being referenced here. I use the word "indicated" because if the doctrinal points on speaking in tongues, manifestations in general and "walking worthy" are lined up there's significant overlap. (a lot of subject titles and labels would capture those elements, probably others too). It would be incorrect however to say that what a person experiences as "fruit of the spirit" is solely the result of - only - speaking in tongues, or "operating" any one of the "manifestations" as they were taught by the Way. It simply won't happen, for the kinds of reasons noted here - if a person live's in sin, does wrong, breaks any and all commandments, standards, and moral and ethical instructions at will that are contained in the bible and can't even observe simple common sense for any length of time - but still says they "speak in tongues" .... "a lot" ....they aren't going to have the kinds of things listed in Galatians (and other places) like "joy" or "peace", or more broadly a "godly" life that reflects the example and teachings of Jesus Christ or His earliest followers. . Someone may wallow fat and happy in their tub of toxic lard lifestyle and call that by the same names, but the criteria for "receiving the things of God" isn't the result of doing one thing and only that one thing to the exclusion of everything else. The true "abundant life in all of it's manifestations" or whatever simply won't be realized that way. That doesn't mean people won't try to say that's what they're living. If they're not, they'll be found liars upon even a cursory examination. "SIT bypasses that part of the reasoning part of the mind blah blah?" The critical component that I understood from the Way's teachings while in the Way and that I still believe is supportable by scripture is that speaking in tongues - whatever it is - is private and personal. It doesn't inform or reflect human religious edicts or even expectations. I do sympathasize with anyone who was misled or somehow found their brain mushing in as a result of what they did. I simply know that hasn't been the case for myself, my wife or many others.

I'll admit openly I may not be familiar with all the various rituals and rites that may have developed thorughout the Wayfer communities, but my own exposure and what I did see throughout the country wouldn't support that, but hey. I can definitely accept that if that's what people say they experienced and it's what you say happened to you, there must be a reason. I can't see that it would be actual SIT's though. Many of us saw the red flags, but they're only apparent in retrospect. I wonder if this wasn't in part due to the fact our brain was busy with other thing. Hmmmmm....hmmmm........ Dunno, can't get inside someone else's head. ("Hey! there's some cool stuff in here!')

Yeah, the cram it down your throat thing doesn't work either way, coming or going, does it? Do I SIT? Not anymore, haven't in years. I've found it shuts off my ability to think. Seems you can't think and SIT at the same time. Which, oddly, worked to da vey's advantage. How'd you figure that out? I'm really curious is all. Did you actually experience that you didn't think hmmm thoughts, when doing it, at the same time, or that your thinking ability or processes were impeded or degraded by doing so? Were there long periods of one or the other where one somehow cancelled or prevented the other? The "work to the Way's" advantage comment I have read from time to time on GS but I don't see how, frankly. To make an independent decision - That no one else can validate as authentic or fake - And if you don't think it actually does anything ?? How does the Way get benefit from that? I don't get it.
