TWI/MUSIC/"WAY PROD EARLY DAYS"/THE BEAT GOES ON/ETC.....

Yea, A La, wasn't the Jazz series great? I ran my schedule around it, really enjoyed it. What stories and visuals. Wynton Marsalis was a joy to see, tooting out little parts like when he commented on Louie Armstrong. Great stuff. There's a quote from that series, can't place who now, but it was a description of jazz and rock and roll..."Rock and roll finds a place and stays there. Jazz finds a place, and goes somewhere". It's pretty accurate and not demeaning to rock, but aptly describes the joys of both-rock clarifies a moment of thought and feeling and digs in and works it rhythmically and harmonically. Jazz takes that moment and stretches it out, embellishes on it, expands it. Good musicians can do both with integrity. Grizz- that's kind of cool, isn't it? Jazz really draws it all in, and it's one of our country's true native art forms, made by the people, for the people! Music really can be a great expression of the soul, whether it swings like crazy or lifts the heart like a symphony. I have to wonder sometimes, if the Psalms had been music, wow! Joy, sadness, longing, pain, deliverance. It's all there. ------------ Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!..... -

Wow, there's some great stuff on this thread. It's great to read all these perspectives. I've really enjoyed reading all this through. Ted's on a roll! Ted knows his chit. Ted, I remember seeing all the boxes of albums you had when we were setting up shop in '74. Ted had (still?) an incredibly diverse listening library, both long and deep in artist's and selection. I had left most of mine at home when we went in the corps so it was great to see and listen to stuff you had. Speaking of music and it's effect, Kathy - we went tonight over to a club in Oakland, CA. with some friends and heard Kenny Burrell, a jazz guitarist who's been around since the 40's. Sat at tables in the front row, not 5 feet from him and the band. I've listened to him since his "Man at Work" album, but never seen him live. He's an exquisite player in the traditional jazz style, one he helped to form on guitar. It was awesome For music fans, and jazz fans in general, I'd highly recommend catching Kens Burns's jazz series the next time it runs locally on PBS where you live, if you haven't. It is an incredible documentary on the history of American jazz and hits on a lot of the things Ted's talking about. I have the book too and met him at a preview earlier this year for his latest piece on Mark Twain, another favorite of mine. I asked him a little about how he made the "Jazz" doc, and it was truly a labor of love for him. Very good work. Anyway, I'll check out for now and see what Ted's got next! ------------- For kids and music - mine get to listen to whatever they want for the most part and decide what they want to embrace. They're upbringing and values determine the choices they make. They already know that music is powerful. Music is a part of my life and their mothers and I could no more separate it out of my soul than I could what color my skin is. They've been raised that way and we are very open about music of all kinds. They already know when someone sings "KILL the @#kers!", that's nowhere. But they're young. They have energy, determination and they're aggressive in the way all youth is. They like music loud, just like I did and still do! So, we get along very well. One plays bass, the other drums, and I have a guitar amp rig driven by a 400 watt Sunn top. We can rattle the bookshelves when we want to. ------- Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!..... Hills, ya skamp! This is disgraceful. I suggest you leave them up for awhile though, just so we have a good example of how low TV will sink. Truth to tell, these young ladies are a tad skinny for socks. The one on the left is cute, maybe it's the smile, the pose. She's happy! Such a happy woman! And bringing such happiness! Myself, I like clothes that suggest. I'm very susceptible to suggestion. A little goes a long way, well, we're talking women's clothing lines here, right? Never mind, forget that topic. But I think a look that carries a surprise here and there is highly more suggestive than one that let's it all hang out. One that says "maybe" instead of "fer sure, dude!" ------------------ Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!.....

Ted, Ted, Ted. Good to see you man! Here we be. I appreciate your words, but I thought that was 10 bucks...?!? Haaa! You're kind. Don't tell Danny Hofer I've got Wes's licks down, he'll show us both up, in his sleep! I get the feeling Satori's got some things going too. All I can say is I tried. I wish I'd done better. I liked being the utilty man, got to play and learn some stuff I wouldn't have otherwise. I've had a lot of catching up to do, broke my left middle finger about 6 years ago, and that put a cramp in my style. Had to relearn the whole dammed thing over again practically, couldn't even close my hand all the way. I'm a persistent li'l rascal though. We never talk, which is my fault, but you know I've always felt you were a force to be reckoned with and one that held Joyful Noise together single handedly, despite all our cryin' and fighting and you never put us down or held us back. You let us take the front line and brought out the best in everyone. We may have been of limited talent, but you worked with what you had! Saw Skip, Nancy and Dave G a few weeks ago. Some things never change, they're looking good, living large and still full of love. Love you, man! BB King, George Thoroughgood, Fabulous Thunderbirds
socks replied to Oakspear's topic in Entertainment Archives
That's great Oakspear! Sounds like a great show. Good to hear B.B. is still doing it. I love him. Seen him many times over the years. I'd almost call him my "father" in guitar. I love him. One of my fondest moments is meeting him once, briefly, backstage at a concert in Dayton, Ohio after his set. A very classy guy, and caring about his fans. A woman was having something signed when we walked up and this guy rushed up to him and says "Sign this B.B.!" and shoved a flier at him. B.B. nodded and said "I will, but I'm talking to this good woman here right now, you'll have to wait a minute, sir". " Good woman, indeed. He's always held his dignity. Best show, the Trojan club, Seattle, Wa. (seems like) with about 200 other people at tables, knocking back rum and cokes. He ripped. He showed up late and hit the stage while his band was playing tunes and picked up his guitar (Gibson stereo 335 through a Lab Series amp) and let loose. It was out of tune. He didn't stop for a second, played right through it and tuned as he went. Song ended, he yelled "One, two, three!..." and counted off right in to the next song. He did that for 3 or 4 songs straight without a breath, sweating like a horse. Finally, he came up for air, and said how sorry he was for being late and for things not being right and then proceeded with the night.... He's a class act all the way. Thanks for letting me reminisce on your thread. Glad he rocked!!! -

Yeah, you'll be "ridin' with the king"! Where's the show? Just got a biography of Steve Ray Vaughn, and am really enjoying the stories of he and his brother Jimmy of the Thunderbirds. He's a great blues player. Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!..... -
Speaking of names, I picked "socks" about the time I was winding off of workstation installs where I work and starting to work on our intranet. socks is a computer term, and here's the official definition: It just seemed like a funny term, and then I realized it was the Clinton's cat, which seemed interesting. He must've seen a few things from time to time. Socks are warm and fuzzy. Dunno. It must've been a late night coffee jag thing. Dancin' Calvin-love that little guy! I need that kind of energy! Hey Sudo, xp doesn't have one. It's set up on the nt kernal not the dos kernel. I too yearn for the "good old days" although they ain't comin' back this way too soon! By the way, you can download the xp files for setup disks on floppies from microsoft, if you don't have a backup set. I always keep sets on floppies for any systems I use, as well as the cd's, since the good ol' floppies work no matter what. Get 'em while they're hot, ms is making "as is" noises. They're here if you need them. ------------ Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!.....

Hmmm...sure! How do we play? I'll raise you....one....Sigourney Weaver? Movies...I need to check that list out! Krys, while everyone's disconnecting their laptops I would highly recommend these flicks: The Abyss...sci-fi fantasy, with a nice love story in the sub-plot. Cool effects, and not a horror kind of thing, which bore me. The Quick and the Dead, aforementioned, with Sharon Stone, Russell (not Matthew! smak smak!) Crowe, Gene Hackman. A western shoot out movie, in fact, one collection of shoot-outs one after the other. Interesting story, kind of fun if you like westerns. Pale Rider/The Unforgiven....more westerns, Clint Eastwood stars/directs in both, first as the man who stll doesn't have a name, and then as William Muny, former really-bad-guy, back to try killing again one last time, but this time for "good". Both great flicks to see back to back. Pale Rider cinematography is great, Unforgiven feels like it might have really been in the "old" west. Ghost Dogs....with Forrest...can't recall his last name. Story of a young man who's a "hit man" for a mafia family, he follows a Samuraii code of conduct. Language is x-rated, but it's a quirky kinda cool flick. Memento....rent Memento! Great flick. Insurance estimator loses his short term memory after his wife is killed, can't remember more than 5 minutes in a row what just happened. Story is told backwards, starting from the "end", in little clips that revolve around his search for her killer. Ya gotta see it, can't say more, the plot is filled with cool stuff. The ending leaves you going "...uh...uh...whu...????" ------------ Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!..... Right on, Zix, you recognized Sharon Stone from "The Quick and the Dead". I just assumed everyone would know that wasn't Val Kilmer on a good hair-day. (although I should probably check archives for something from "The Doors", ol' Jim Morrison could certainly wear a good head of hair). What I was looking for was a picture of Marilyn Monroe in a western hat, but figured who better to typify the Hollywood western slap-leather-buddy-this-ain't-no-flute-in-my-holster mentality than Sharon Stone? All we need is Matthew Crowe for that big smacker from Ging! You want a derailment? Here's your huckleberry... ------------- Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!.....

Ging, I like the movie "Tombstone" too. Great flick, and Val Kilmer plays Doc really well. I think your use of that line "I'm your huckleberry" (here's your/I'll be/whatever) was rather cool. The way Val delivers it, it sounds like he's saying "come on, let's play. Bring it on". It's a no-fear, look-you-straight-in-the-eye kinda thing. In the movie, Ringo wants no part of it, then let's his ego get the better of him thinking ol' Doc is on his last breath anyway. Poor Ringo. Anyway, we need a picture so here's one: ----- Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!.....

johniam, yes, he's playing with them and sounds great. if you have a chance to see them do it if you like their music. their entire lineup is exceptional. you can check their schedule out at their site, towerofpower.com corrydj, their drummer Dave Garibaldi is/was a grad. Skip Mesquite, sax player of the original lineup, also. I've enjoyed the songs of Jars of Clay and Audio Adrenaline. It's good stuff. Lots of good music! Sounds like a great time, corrydj. I'm familiar with some of the music you mention, and there's some good stuff happening. I would agree with you, there is a lot of good being done throughout the world in many Christian corners-vibrant, good, heart-felt things. It's invigorating to hear your comments and experience! I checked out "Hillsongs" out of Australia several years ago, and from the first time I heard a tape of their music, I had a similar reaction to yours here. It just knocked me back. All I could think was "WOW!" Their music was very powerful, well produced, good scoring and arranging, just well built pop music. My daughter and a group from a local church went there a couple years to an annual get together, attended some music workshops (she plays drums) and had a blast. While we're not members, we were enlightened by the experience. I too wish that the Way would raise their eyes up and see what's out going on in the fields beyond the corn in Ohio. "Sincerity" was always one of those buzz-kill words that red flagged anyone's efforts as being sub-standard. I can picture Wayfers reading your words and thinking "but it's no guarantee for truth!" Yet, those people you saw were out, working hard, doing what they believed was right and at some personal expense to boot, not holed up in solitude enetertaining themselves like some Pharisees-on-bingo-night. Thanks for posting that! Sounds like your were busy! We're all heading to see Tower of Power tonight, up here in northern California. Can't wait! Love that funk. -------------- Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!.....

Happy Dad's day to all. As A Dad, thanks! This dad had fun, and although I did not expect a gift, I got a couple or two from The Kids. Including...Invader Zim and Gir stuff!!!! (fondling my stuffed Zim and Gir toys!!!) But it's about the kids, ain't it? No words can exactly say what they mean to me. Life! the board "remembers" previous post titles we've made - just got a little drop down when i went to type in that field and it gave me the most recent ones i've entered, to select from. now that's kinda cool. there's a lot of points being brought up about editing i'd never really thought about...hmmm... i'd still vote for just leaving edit on all the time, but i can see now why in some cases it could be a hassle. dunno. doesn't matter much to me either way...maybe a compromise inbetween...? 12 hours, 42 minutes and 30 seconds? Well, it's a snappy board. I really like the search capability. Here we are, nar' a week in to this baby, and I typed in a search for "tithe", as if I were an innie doin' research on how to be an outtie and BAM! it kicked it up a notch right to the 4 posts that used that word, and quick! UBB is swell. Laleo, I'm sure the electronic gremlins are grateful for your contributions, maybe it's just holding the thank you's until the end of the week and you'll get a big KISS and a card. I noticed it didn't come up a couple times too. Where's my card? Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!.....

Same thing musta happened to me, Sat'. I thought I put in "Dis" "Play" as my display name, but I guess not. Now I've got the asterik and no field to enter it or change it, can't edit my profile with witty sayings. -
Ain't it though? Glad u liked it! We try typing in anyword.com and see what comes up. Most domain names are taken, although it's surprising some that aren't or aren't anymore. spleen.com is taken for example. Go figure. trucks dot com is a good one if you're in to trucks.

Let's see where it lands. Interesting comments, Hope. Hmmm...maybe. Dunno. I've always had a ying/yang thing going in my personality. Like, when I was about 11, knee deep in Catholic Parochial education, I decided that being a priest would be cool. I was a fairly serious thinker (then as now I guess) and I figured, "if anyone understands what all this is about, priests do". Kids, huh? At the same time, same year, I was raisin' serious Cain with my teachers, askin' questions like "why are we so sure there's a heaven"? and "how do we know there's a God"? It got so "bad" that mid year or so the Sistern called my parents in to talk to them about how I was developing "Communist" views...! No kidding, really happened. 11 years old, I'm a communist, right? Pass the vodka! So here I am, a kid, looking for "answers" and thinking I'll be a priest, and at the same time I was questioning openly the whole religious thing. Later in high school, I met a priest, "Father Donovan", who told me he'd quit high school in Ireland and hitchhiked around Europe for a few years, questioning everything he'd been raised to believe and finally came back to the Catholic faith. So there he was, and he actually encouraged me to a/question everything and b/definitely wait to even think about being a priest, till I'd had a chance to grow up a little. By then I wasn't interested, (I was surrounded by Catholic girls in pleated skirts!) but it was interesting advice. So long story longer, I've found I've always been kind of like that. A non-joiner who likes to join things and then try to change them. Doesn't make sense, does it? So now I don't look to join anything. If something comes along I want to be a part of, I do it, but I'm really careful about making committments because I know how I am. I work hard and heavy on things I believe in but I also know things change - they're supposed to I think. I personally believe that the one thing that doesn't is "love", definable on any number of levels. That's all I'm looking to carry away to the last moment I take a breath. And maybe a hug or two and a nice guitar in hand, if I have my druthers... I place highest on my list of "things I belong to" my family, our kids, marriage, and friends (which is just about anybody that doesn't try to screw me) and that's about it. "Intangible assets" I guess. Hmmm...nother long post, not much said. But it's something...let's all sing a song...
