A la Prochaine, you're home, and home is where the heart is. You wander no more, pilgrim! There's peace in the valley, a fire burning, veggies on the wok, wine in the glass, and a DAM comfy couch. Oh yeah, and "out here" YOU get to hold the Remote. :)--> ----------------------------- quack [This message was edited by socks on January 27, 2003 at 0:05.]

Yeah, I've seen it. Long time since. Now I'm thinking I've gotta rent that puppy. When my son had long hair in high school, he looked a little like a young JT, so said an admirer of his youthtful visage, once. I need to check it out. ----------------------------- quack -

Yes I do Hope! We remember it well and often. It was such a fun night. Didn't he make a joke, something about being down in the dressing rooms and looking out at the parking lot through the window and seeing all the cars? He said "You all have some real nice cars". :)--> I'd love to see those pictures. Yes!! Aaaah. Hope, if there isn't a God, then all his coink-inky dink is fun. I was chatting with A la last night and the topic of time came up, don't ask me how. :P--> THAT SONG came to my mind and I meant to listen to it. THANK you. It's such a cool song. ----------------------------- quack -

Hey Happy Gang! Kathy, praying, and stayin' as u can see. My best to you! It's cloudy, cool and has all the makings of another rainy day on the west coast. Listened to this tune on the way in to work this morning. It's shower time, James Taylor style. The pastor of sweet music speaks :)--> : ----------------- Shower the People You can play the game and you can act out the part Though you know it wasn't written for you But tell me, how can you stand there with your broken heart Ashamed of playing the fool One thing can lead to another; it doesn't take any sacrifice Oh, father and mother, sister and brother if it feels nice, don't think twice Just shower the people you love with love Show them the way that you feel Things are gonna work out fine if you only will Shower the people you love with love Show them the way you feel Things are gonna be much better if you only will You can run but you cannot hide This is widely known And what you plan to do with your foolish pride When you're all by yourself alone Once you tell somebody the way that you feel You can feel it beginning to ease I think it's true what they say about the squeaky wheel Always getting the grease. Better to shower the people you love with love Show them the way that you feel Things are gonna be just fine if you only will Shower the people you love with love Show them the way that you feel Things are gonna be much better if you only will ----------------------------- quack -
You mean like this? -> this is important :D--> Actually, it's the colored drawings in the older King James bibles that sets what's ROCKIN'..."Moses Receives the Tables"..."Jesus turns the water in to wine"... ----------------------------- quack

Hey Raf. Is it the PFAL videotapes you're thinking of? He does mention it along the lines of "regarding figures of speech, the person who's done the most work on it that (he) knows of is E.W. Bullinger". It's a brief statement. EW was definitely the 900 lb gorilla on figures of speech. I've got some of his stuff. "How to Enjoy the Bible" is a nice piece of work, has a great deal of the same material in PFAL, presented differently. Here's what he says, parts of, in his intro to Figures of Speech, if this is of any interest: ------------ In fact, it is not too much to say that, in the use of these figures, we have, as it were, the Holy Spirit's own markings of our Bibles. This is the most important point of all. For it is not by fleshly wisdom that the "words which the Holy Ghost teacheth" are to be understood. The natural man cannot understand the Word of God. It is foolishness unto him. A man may admire a sun-dial, he may marvel at its use, and appreciate the cleverness of its design; he may be interested in its carved-work, or wonder at the mosaics or other beauties which adorn its structure: but, if he holds a lamp in his hand or any other light emanating from himself or from this world, he can make it any hour he pleases, and he will never be able to tell the time of day. Nothing but the light from God's sun in the Heavens can tell him that. So it is with the Word of God. The natural man may admire its structure, or be interested in its statements; he may study its geography, its history, yea, even its prophecy; but none of these things will reveal to him his relation to time and eternity. Nothing but the light that cometh from Heaven. Nothing but the Sun of Righteousness can tell him that. It may be said of the Bible, therefore, as it is of the New Jerusalem -- "The Lamb is the light thereof." The Holy Spirit's work in this world is to lead to Christ, to glorify Christ. The Scriptures are inspired by the Holy Spirit; and the same Spirit that inspired the words in the Book must inspire its truths in our hearts, for they can and must be " Spiritually discerned " (I Cor. 2:1-16). On this foundation, then, we have prosecuted this work. And on these lines we have sought to carry it out. -------------------------- Kind of long, but pretty nifty. He does say he considered them "holy spirit's own markings". Still and all, he strongly suggests a two-fold learning curve-biblical study and the inspiration of Holy Spirit to open it's truths to us. The end result is to lead to Christ. Knowledge without the corresponding understanding is incomplete. So, his approach seemed to recognize that just knowing the figures of speech wasn't enough. That may be why he words it the way he does..."not too much to say"...."we have, as it were".... It also seems that if a person were to study the bible, research it say, than as their understanding was opened to it's truth, they would be led to Christ, in an ongoing process. In other words, it keeps taking you back to Him. It may not be too much to say then, that if we find it taking us anywhere else we have a DEFinite marking of the Holy Spirit telling us that we're heading in the wrong direction. As it were. :)--> ----------------------------- quack

Hey Buck, yeah! Nice background there. Harve and I talked about Roy back then and he later played me a live cassette of that tune Someday. It was very nice and I remember it just the way you describe it. First met Harve that summer he came in for the workshop. He had his Gibson SG strapped on the back of his bike. I was hanging around the BRC driveway. Couple years later, played him an album by a guy named Ray Gomez, who is another RB kind of player, with a Jeff Beckish kind of sound. Not that well known. By that time Harvey was dropping secular music out of his vocablulary and we didn't get far. But life goes on. Not for Roy though. There is some unresolved controversy with his surviving wife over how he actually died. She attempted to investigate the possibility that his death was the result of police brutality, made to look like a suicide. Phil Carson ties some of it together in his book. Apparently there wasn't enough evidence or money to carry on with it, and he wasn't a big enough "name" for the media to jump on it. It is sad. I feel like he was a long lost brother to me. ----------------------------- quack -

Yah, Skipper. That was the beauty of JN - lots of people played in it over the years. Skip had a huge influence on the sound, played sax of course, flute some, accordion on "Oh the Price He Paid", maybe others can't remember, and brought organ to the arrangements as a regular instrument. The guy has some serious talent. Plus he wrote some nifty tunes. It was always a special moment to hear him wail off at the end of his song "Raise Your Head". He and his wife Nancy, whole family - salt of the earth. David G played some with JN, couple times, not sure what the arrangement was when Takit was out with Joyful Noise or who played drums with them, can't recall. See, it relates..."Earth, Wind and Fire"...salt of the... oh well... :)--> ----------------------------- quack -

Hope, dunno. I heard a version of "I've Just Seen a Face", my daughter had and we compared versions. I think it was Thrice doing it, punk style. It was okay, but well, different. :)--> I'm kind of glad they're picking up on the tunes I guess. That Brown tune is good, solid rock. Lee Sklar's bass playing is xxx-rated PG-18, he's just dead rock hard on the bottom all the way through. I've got it on a few cd's I made of tunes. "Well, just look at that girl With the light comin' up in her eyes. She's got be somebody's baby. She's so fine. She's probably somebody's baby, alright, I try to shut my eyes but I can't get her outta my sight. I know I'm gonna know her but I gotta get over my fright. I'm just gonna walk up to her, I'm gonna talk to her tonight. :)--> It just reminds me of high school, y'know? Every-guy-with-a-gleam-in-his-eye on the make, sweatin' how to say hello to "that girl over there". It's classic. Can't picture another version somehow! ----------------------------- quack -

Thanks, I'm looking for that tune on Kazza, no luck yet. Yeah! The book is titled "Roy Buchanan: An American Axe", by Phil Carson. I got mine at Amazon dot com It starts out from his birth in Arkansas and fills in a lot of history on him. I don't think I can forget his voice on 5 String Blues when he sings: "Oh Jesus, this is my final plea. Don't let the devil, Get the best of me". Then on the tune right after that on the album, side 2 he does this little exquisite acoustic piece and sings: "Thank you, Lord. Saw the sunshine today. Bless you, Lord. Got to see my children play. It may not be the right way to pray. But I want to thank you anyway. Thank you, Lord." The whole thing is so real it's haunting, in the way great blues is when it calls out from deep in the heart. Those two songs leave me wrung out, like you go to this dark place in his heart and then come out to the light of day at the end. The first time my daughter heard his "cry baby" sounds, she got a little scared and she was 17...she knew right off it wasn't a wah wah pedal. "it sounds like a baby crying. No, dad, a REAL baby". She liked it but she didn't want to listen to it again, too spooky she said. He may have never succeeded on a large scale because he was too real. Course then he'd do all that chicken pickin' stuff on novelty tunes like "Haunted House" and I just scratch my head. :)--> ----------------------------- quack [This message was edited by socks on January 22, 2003 at 20:17.] [This message was edited by socks on January 22, 2003 at 20:23.] [This message was edited by socks on January 22, 2003 at 20:28.] -

Just doing a weather check A la and saying hi! Hi! :)--> If dogs were ducks they'd be happy as frogs today in the northern west coast of the Golden State. I've been in it twice and will again, but I'll stop complaining because -20 celcius! is way colder than it was when I got up this morning. Get out those thick, fuzzy socks! :D--> It's not near that cold here. I actually had to switch out of my shorts for sweatpants last night after I got in, it was THAT cold. Yae Oaks! Sad they're gone. I really wish Roy had found the right niche for himself and stopped drinking, too. Reading that last autobio of his by Phil Carson shook my tree. I could understand some of the things he struggled with internally. It was hard to finish it. It seems his family background may have led him to Christ early in life, it's hard to tell. Any idea on that? I ran across a live version of a tune called "Blues in E" online, but the only download I found was a partial. It opens with one of the band saying "Blues in E...look out!" Ever heard of it or any idea where I could get it? It sounded like it was really going to be good. ----------------------------- quack -

Got a minute, take an hour! :)--> Hey, A la, it's rainin' like the dickens here, whatever that is. Just let up a bit ago. How's the no'thern country? Here's a cool lyric from Keb Mo. This guy sounds like he's "been there/done that". Neat tune for the GS lunch rush... :)--> ----- I'm Telling You Now So much has went unspoken Along the way Hearts have healed And hearts have broken In the pain of yesterday Gone are the shadows They vanished in the Light Let your heart surrender Let your soul take flight (Chorus) And let bygones be bygones And troubles be long gone And if I never told you How I feel about you I'm telling you now We gather here together With all of our friends In a room full of love and laughter The healing begins And if this was my last moment My last breath I'd wanna be surrounded With joy and happiness (Chorus) And let bygones be bygones And troubles be long gone And if I never told you How I feel about you I'm telling you now And if I never told you How I feel about you I'm telling you now -------------------------- ----------------------------- quack -

Oaks, I hope ya know I'm a major Roy B fan. Do you like "The Messiah Will Come Again" with that organ intro?...killer tune. That Peter Gunn version is great. My favs of his vary but I really like "5 String Blues" with the crying sound he gets at the end (gives me goose bumps even still) and "Johns Blues". I read in an autobio that he broke a string in the studio at the end of "5 String" (thus the title) and never stopped playing, and you can't hear it happen. I've listened to where it sounds like it COULD have happened, but man, he was in another WORLD at the end of that tune so I guess it didn't matter to him anyway. :)--> Say Tele, and you've said ROY! I won't start a debate, (or maybe I will!) but Danny Gatton, who's been compared to him often, was never quite up to par. He was also billed as..."The Worlds Best Unknown Guitarist" on occasion. Roy had that funky 4-flat-tires-on-a-muddy-road blues sound that was so natural it just flowed. ----------------------------- quack -

Hey Oaks! John Mc is a great guitarist. That's cool, and he has done some incredible music. I remember his "Johnnie McLaughlin-electric guitarist" he did that had some incredible playing on it. There's a group I haven't heard come up yet, maybe so, not sure. "King's X"...Ty Tabor is the guitarist, great rock player. The bassist uses an 8 string bass, each string doubled and it makes an awesome sound. Rattles your teeth! :)--> Has a piano like sound on some stuff. Been taping some albums lately and found my old Jimmy Reed Anthology album, on Vee Jay. They put all his hits on it through the 50's and early 60's, and each song has an interviewer asking him about the song and Reed tells the story behind it. Awesome album. Reed lived his last years in Oakland, California my home town. Great blues songwriter and player. Wrote a lot of his stuff with his wife, Mary ("Mama") Reed. Another piece I picked up on recently is Michael Hedges "If I Needed Someone", his instrumental version of the Beatles song. MAN! That song is deep the way he does it. It just floats along almost timeless. It's really beautiful. well....to bed...catch you all later! [This message was edited by socks on January 20, 2003 at 1:37.] -

This is for you A la (quack) :P--> and Kathy and all those who love great literature when it's combined with great melody. Here for your reading enjoyment and pleasure are the lyrics to what has to be one of the greatest songs ever written: Hello Mother, Hello Father Hello mother, hello father, Here I am at Camp Grenada. Camp is very entertaining, And they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining! I went hiking with Joyce Fivey, He developed poison ivy. You remember Lennard Skynard, He got tomain poisoning last night after dinner! All the counselors hate the waiters, And the lake has alligators! And the head coach wants no sissies, So he reads to us from something called 'Ulysses'. No, I don't want (this should scare ya), But my bunkmate has malaria! You remember Geoffrey Hardy, They're about to organize a searching party! Take me home, oh mother, father. Take me home, I hate Grenada. Don't leave me out in the forest, Where I might get eaten by a bear! Take me home, I promise that I will not make noise, Or mess the house with other boys. Oh please don't make me stay; I've been here one whole day! Dearest father, darling mother, How's my precious little brother? Let me come home if you miss me; I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me! Wait a minute; it stopped hailing. Guys are swimming, guys are sailing. Playing baseball; gee that's better. Mother, father, kindly disregard this letter! ----------------------------- quack -

Hope, you make me think yeah, what would the Beatles be like if they'd stayed and "kept it real" in Hamburg and The Cavern, playing for beer and chips? :)--> No, they had to clean up and bring us those collarless suits! And some pretty decent music :D--> Read an interview with Todd Rundgren years ago, where he said he figured, not to be egotistical, but he pretty much had the "pop song" genre down and could pump out tunes in that format with relative ease. (I'd agree wholeheartedly!) He went on to say that he wondered if all the possible combinations of music had already been written and that looking for that "lost chord" for a song was less likely to produce more music as looking to simply create and using whatever forms we knew. It was an interesting observation. Probably represents what most writers do in reality. Hearing that Avril cd reminded me of that, because the music is nothing new. Lyrically, it seems there's a lot of ground we can open up to when we speak from the heart with our own perspectives. And still and whatever...there's always those few songs that come out every year that just seem to put it all together in a new and interesting way! I was never a Ramone's fan, but could see the attraction. They were cool in their own way. I was sad at Joey Ramone's death last year. ------------------------ ----------------------------- quack -

Lay back it's all been done before And if you could only let it be you will see I like you the way you are When we're drivin' in your car and you're talking to me one on one but you've become Somebody else round everyone else You're watching your back like you can't relax You're tryin' to be cool you look like a fool to me Tell me Why you have to go and make things so complicated? Ha! :D--> A la. Well, God forbid I should ever throw away a piece of music. I'm looking at the photocopy of the "Poems, Prayers and Promises", by John Denver, with the lyric sheet. Looks like it was in D with a dropped D tuning. I seem to remember Ted pulling this one outta the hat. I have it scratched out "pass the pipe" and sang "share the Word around". Denver uses the phrase "my old lady", which really dates this tune. :)--> Back in to the drawer ye go! -------------------- Is the time/space meter needle supposed to be jumping around like that? *tap-tap*...sqwrkltpzfttt@#$%^&!!!!!!..... -
