Well, the more I read about "soul sleep" Mark, the more I'm unclear on what it actually means, but if this defiition is what it means, as Adventists define it, it definitely isn't what The Way taught. Here's a fairly succinct definition of soul sleep I found online- Termed "conditional immortality" by the SDA church and "Annihilations" by others, it is the teaching that at death the soul (life essence) of a person enters a state of unconsciousness until resurrection day when God will once again breath the breath of life into their body. The soul is thus considered to be conditionally immortal. This isn't what The Way taught. Go back to PFAL and the section dealing with body/soul/spirit, "formed, made, created". VPW sets his idea forth that soul life ("breath life") either passes on to the person's children and continues or if there's no children it dies at death, ceases to be. Soul life was presented as basically the life force of any living person, animal. In his view it held no special significance in relation to "spiritual" matters, other than it was "made whole" at the time of the new birth by the receiving/presence of "holy spirit". He taught, if there's life, there's a "soul" of some kind. In his view it would come to the same end as the body, which "returns to dust". He stated when a person dies his own soul life "terminates" and "is no more".

Ooooh. shudder. "The Thing" - isn't that the one in the North Pole, or South Pole? Where the alien is some kind of vegetable matter-man thing and he comes lumbering down the hall in the end and gets electro-burned up??!!! Awesome flick. There's that journalist in it too, the character actor, great actor, can't place the name. GREAT flick!!!! Theremin too!!!! Yow!!!!! That move kept me up at night when I was a wee one, more so than any of the modern "slasher" flicks, which are usually just gross-outs of things I can do without seeing so I never go. But in their day - The Thing, The Day the Earth Stood Still - they RULED!!!! I hear ya on the drop tuning. That's a great topic, and I gotta hit the sack but I know what you mean. And some musicians tune down, usually to an Eb or D, and just transpose or use a capo. Again, great sound out of that Springfield.

Mark, an interesting question being posited. Honestly, it's not one keeping me awake at night, but not because I wish the worst for him. He's dead now, and can't do anymore harm. It's a little like asking if all the water in the world could be put in glasses, how many glasses would you need? Interesting to calculate but really unknowable to any degree of precision in the end. Figure, there's always going to be that one little pond no one knows about. If the question is really "can God forgive the seemingly unforgivable", the answer would be yes. What does that mean, and how is it done? Who knows? I suppose if I were God it could be very simple. Is the question really "can YOU/ME forgive the seemingly unforgivable? And if so, what relies on that? If a man responsible for killing people and causing death to 100's directly and indirectly were to repent of that evil, I'd be thankful for the change of heart whenever it occured. But it doesn't bring the dead back. And on that level, someone could feel the same way towards George Bush. "Accepting Jesus Christ" is sort of a loaded phrase. To do so requires understanding and meaning. I suspect it's not a "hail-mary" pass at the last minute where someone runs down their list of dieties and their requirements so as to have the best shot at some sort of after life, if it's coming. So I dunno. Life in even the shortest increments is an incredible thing. I'd hope that he made the best of his last moments. What they might really have been I have no idea.

I may be one bun short of a hot dog here, but I think - ? - the term "soul sleep" is being referred to as something that The Way taught...am I getting that right? "Soul sleep" is a new term to me, so I had to do some checking on what it meant. As far as the Way goes, the term itself wasn't used up to 1989, after that I can't say. I don't think "soul sleep" would be the same as what The Way taught, although it's sounds similar in some ways. In "Are the Dead Alive Now" and other teachings VPW did, he maintained that when a person died, they died. Their spirit, the pneuma hagion if they were "born again", returned to God" at that time, leaving the body. However the soul, the individual personality, awareness and consciousness ended at death. So for all practical purposes a person is gone and life is over at that time. They don't "go to heaven" or continue in any extended dormant state. The comparison to sleep was that death was "like" sleep in that a person is no longer conscious or aware of what's going on. They're "out". But of course when we're asleep it's not the same as being dead. The comparison of sleep/death was a limited one. There's a lot of unknowns in that, and there's a lot of unknowns in the whole topic of course. But that's the way I understood the Way's teaching at one time. It was taught, death is final and complete and uniterrupted until and unless a resurrection takes place, which was taught would occur at some future time in the return of Jesus Christ.

Chatty, I often get little riffs and lyrics going in my head in the car, and if I can I'll try to keep them going till I'm home. Often they drift off, sometimes not. Priobably the same for most people. A lot of times the 'sound' will come out first time out, then get lost with refinement, so I have to go back and recapture what I had in the original. I'm a pack rat, save every version till I'm way past needing it. Just did some backups of old tunes and deleted off my deck - FINally. Wanted to add - you'll like this. Schifrin did the soundtrack to "Dirty Harry" which was when I first heard him. There's a CD out of the soundtrack, remixed, stereo, pristine audio by all acounts. THIS LINK has some samples of the tracks. Just listen to "Harry's Hot Dog" and then "Scorpio's View"....classic Lalo.

Yup Chas, it's acoustic/electric, an archtop, maple, 'round hole'. Has a piezo pickup under the bridge saddles. Takamine only made them for one year in 1984. I bought it, think it was 86-87. I always carry baby pictures - :) HERE - lower left.

Chas, in the words of UPS, "buy it and it will come!" Well, I strung my Tak(amine) up with the .010 flat wounds ("ribbon") and it plays very nicely. Haven't had flats on it for many a year and it seems to like them. It accomodates more of that sound anyway, and although it's not as "fat" as the .011's, it's very playable with the lighter gauge .010 set but still has a wound 3rd string. That really seems to maintain a better sound than an unwound 3rd, although for rock and blues and what-not, the unwound 3rd is what ya need to get the bends. Invisible Dan, what key is that in? Sounds played like A, but it seems to be in G. Or an open tuning? Again, nice sound. Everything's there, it's very complete. Chatty, I do love movie scores, "long form", where there's a theme followed. Most of what I write these days starts as an image, and goes from there. One of my long time favorite composers is Lalo Schifrin, who's written many films scores over the years. AWEsome stuff.

You know what they say, a man's got to know his own limitations. Now, One Day was a fun tune, I'm glad Claudette sings it. Thanks! That's a very cool tune, I-Dan! Love it and the effect is well applied. It has a very 'complete' sound, sounds familiar, but new. "Accessible" is the word I'm looking for. Actually, it sounds like a pretty clean performance of it. Was that miked, or direct, or both...? Also, the new gear - what is that puppy? It looks like it has handles...? Are you thinking of adding it to that song?

HI Chatty, that's a nice piece. Mark Knopfler. Dunno, that's a good ending. The music has such a melancholy sound, it seems to lend itself to a fadeout like that. The lyric gives an impression of what's going on, can be taken at face value, and then filled in as much as the listener wants. It's sparse, bare. Planty of room to let the story tell itself to each person hearing it. The bass pulse is nice, adds tension and keeps pace. I might - (here's why MK makes the big bucks and I don't I"m sure) - have done a little more with that in the last half, expanded it to a moving figure that would imply action starting. Against the lyric it sort of paints that Phillip Marlow/guy in a bar in the corner watching the world/kind of feel. The lyrics imply a lot is about to happen, stuff going on under the controlled surface of the music and offbeat vocal. So I might have been tempted to take it there, and ended the song with more movement. But - that's probably another song. :) Cool tune. Thanks!

At my age, encouragement is dangerous! Thanks Chatty, I've never had a great voice, no secret there to anyone who's endured it, but I guess it's about the same as ever. But thanks. :) Someone with better pipes could something with it, I'm sure. No other word for it dmiller. Alien artifacts of some sort. Insidious. And they propogate. I know it! Strings? I searched and searched, well, a little searching, for .010 "light" gauge flat wound strings and kept running into .011's, slightly heavier than desired. Walked into our local store to day to get some others and lo'n'behold, there were .010's right there on the rack. So I got some. I'm looking for a steady supplier, they seem to be scarce. :blink: Niiiice....Telecasters are really nice. The latest Guitar Player has a couple articles on Tom Petty and his band, and they've got an early 50's Broadcaster he says has been on most of their releases over the years. The photo is sweet - apparently they've never cleaned the guitar and the only modification is one replaced fret. Other than that, it's 'original'. Minus some serious neck/fretboard grunge.

Enough already, the light's been burned out and replaced a dozen time, but this one has most of the alien ooze removed and a guitar yodeling ending. Last one out please turn off the !@#$!! light, it's time to hit the sack!

Chas, I'm glad Mathman liked it! Cool. I'm using combinations of reverb and stereo digital delay, and flanging. The flange is set to a very small sweep, just enough to get a "grind" going on a couple of the solo parts. The delay is set to about 4-5 fast repeats, at about the same strength as the straight guitar sound. That's got some reverb on it. In the double picking part towards the start, the arpeggio, it's all added. At the end there's 3 guitar leads, the first is almost straight with no flanging and a little delay, the second a fair amount added (about "20" out of 100 with flanging) and the 3rd just a little, maybe 5. The voice has some delay added and the vocal harmony parts are chorused a little, trying to beef them up a little without adding more tracks. The chorusing is the same as for a guitar, just a little bit added seemed to help. I think some of the mush/compression/green-alien sound I'm hearing is a combination of the preamp compression and these delays bouncing around. I try to model it after a "natural" setting based on a room model, in this case a studio set up with mic's set back a bit, but still close, intimate. Dunno. Does that make sense?

Hmmm, well, Chattster, lessee... :) it's just a longish piece I wrote awhile back and have been messing around with. I'd like to score for film, which is probably a dream of many-a musician. I have a couple contacts I'm nurturing and started this for a project that didn't take off, which was fine. I call it "orchestra in a box" because it's all generated on my PC, using a keyboard connected to the PC and software that has all the instruments. I write the stuff, play it and record it on tracks and mix it, pretty much like anything else.

Yeah, Dan, Sound Forge does the trick! It's a pretty powerful program and was pretty easy for me to learn the basics on. I like it. Chatty, we are glad to have you back! How's it going fer ya? Thanks Dan. I'm using pc synth sounds for the organ with a little keyboard controller going into the pc thru the usb port. It's fun trying to be a one-handed Booker T. You mentioned Sound Forge - which version do you have? Chas, you made me think - I've been sort of waiting to see what would drop into the opening part. Way back in about '69, I played an acoustic version of this song. The first two songs I remember singing in fellowship were Camping in Canaan's Land and I saw the Light. Camping was hilarious, for some reason and I Saw the Light, which was a good 20 years old by then. My Mom remembered it from the midwest as a popular song. So I did a rock version of it with a couple bands, and then a fingerpicking version, that has the sound you're describing I think, with some sitar-y lines, a bridge that's like a jig. It's a train wreck. Hank wouldn't recognize it, no doubt. I'm not a country/bluegrass picker by any means, as you can hear. Anyhoo, you gave me an idea for the intro - this is my first shot at it - Eastern Light Through a Midwestern Window? :)
