Wasway thank you! I remember him and saying to my husband there is Pilate, but then without it being in English and my reading things I thought they called him something else... Some "C" name. I guess he and his wife were talking about Ciaphus. I tell you, not my cup of tea, when I was reading the lines I kept thinking oh I guess this is some other guy washing his hands also, wonder what happened to Pontius... Being as I never saw all this stuff about the cross, I thought it was an additional thing Mel found in his research or something. It is obvious how I really needed it to be done in English. Now why was Mary wiping up the blood? When that woman gave Mary the linen I thought she was going to go wrap Jesus' wounds or something. See, I do not recall any of the blood wiping in any Bible I read either. I got to the point there were few things I recognized. (Needed the English folks) PI I heard that Gospel of John being advertised on "the Fish" radio. But I was thinking it was a play, I will go check it out! Thank you! Hop Hop Hoppy Birthday! -
Sorry confused here- who was the guy with the wife that gave Mary the linens to wipe up Jesus's blood? I thought that was the guy you were talking about. Wasn't that a guy with a name that sounded like that? When Iwas reading the subtitles and that guy was not wanting to hurt Jesus I thought he was some guy with a "c" name. I kept wndering where Pontus Pilot was. See, for me, it needed to be in English so I did not have to keep dropping my eyes to read. Each person viewing the film will have his or her own how-it-impacted-them view. Some of the impact statements may be similar and others very different than yours/mine. There is no right or wrong. I do think the Catholics will understand it better than a person like me. I think the Catholics are VERY aware of Christ’s’ suffering all through out their involvement with their church. So, perhaps to see it "played out" in front of you/them is very moving to your faith. I am sure some other churches will have similar reactions. IT did not deeply move me. I was aware it was a movie (because of it NOT being in English and having to read subtitles). I kind of thought his walk through the streets was little stupid. Never having learned in my churches about the "stations" of the cross and not really sure if I believe in them I found that difficult to “buy into”. What I do believe in is that a wonderful man who did nothing but good during his life was brutally killed and rose again so that we may live. I do not believe that was portrayed in the film. It focused in on the brutal beatings and the ripping of his skin, the crown being jabbed into his scalp with the blood running through out is hair. I DO think it is important for us to remember/ or think about what he went through for us. But we also need a broader look at the life of Christ, not absent of the horrors, but in balanced with his walk before "the passion" and after. Otherwise, to me, it was two hours of unspeakable horrors that happened to a man. It was a slice of his life, as Diazbro pointed out, a SLICE. But to pull that part out and only show it -- almost standing alone teaching people about a "Christ" I feel does not do Jesus justice. I do not think it combined the victory of Christ with the beatings. I did not leave the theater thinking of the risen Christ and more eager to have him live in my heart. I felt defeated, sickened, turned off and wondering where Pontious Pilot was. I have NEVER bee a fan of foreign films or subtitles - but I am a fan of Jesus. I am sorry I am the only on that felt this way. I cannot change your experience and you cannot change mine. We are discussing the movie and how we felt. If there are tons of people moved by this movie and it leads them to understand Christ better, or to love him more, or to think about him more deeply, then the movie was a giant success. I must represent a small small group of people who do not feel this way. So, although my feelings are mine, and I do not expect anyone to feel what I do, I cannot feel what you guys felt either. So, to me - it was not worth seeing. IF I wanted to know more about the terrible beatings and crucifixion of Christ, then it would have been a success to me as well. I just expected something more balanced. I thought the other parts of Jesus’ life would be represented better. I do not want them to down play what Jesus went through, but just a better glimpse into the whole life of Jesus. But I understand how those of you who knew what "The Passion" meant kind of knew what you were in for and instead of being shocked and sickened, came out understanding what that poor man suffered for us. I am glad and thankful it is making people feel closer to Jesus, unfortunately, it did not do that for me. I am glad that Kit and Raf and others were moved in a glorious sobering way to love and understand Jessus better, I just do not share that result from Mel's movie. But I am the small percentage... The more energetic always take top

Johnny If you see it "small screen" it will not have as large an impact, IMO. I just wish the movie was playing closer to you so you do not have to wait for the video.
-
Wow And Ciaphus wanted to let him go...

Currently 62 degrees. Yesterday, we almost put on the AC as it was 80 degrees in the house. Georgia

i'm here I was just thinking about things I missed. I miss Leslie Olsen singing. I just loved her. I miss Martha Jacobsen Fury and Howard Walker.

Johnny You are a tough guy and it is very appealing. So, is my hubs a tough guy. HE THOUGHT it was MORE violent then he was led to believe.(and has been in bar fights and some pretty violent situations) And he was concerned through out the movie about this six year old child who was sitting a row or two behind us. Johhny, go see it and check in. You seem to be a rough and tumble manly man with a teddy heart- I am curious to see how this affects you as I was surprised at my own 6'4" guy closing his eyes to some of the movie and how he told me he was praying for the child watching it. Before I saw it, I thought and felt differently.

We were taught that in the corps that it was a devil spirit and I heard it from Vic himself. "Anything that has life of itself is a spirit like cancer" There was even a lttle corps girl SHAMED because she had cancer and she was shamed by the campus leaders (early corps who learned from the Vickster first hand)

Groucho I read that and wanted to stand and clap!

Mark What are stations of the cross?

Yes. I thought that was cool!

Don't foget the "caveman" as well... My favorite. Well, I guess I was under a rock. My parents NEVER went to church. My father is an agnostic and my mother was an "I dunno" I went to church with the neighbors. I asked if I could go -- my parents were like don't you want to stay home Sunday and eat waffles? SO, I hitch hiked my way around the churches with other families. I never heard the term "passion" Refer to suffereing and pain. So, a man and wife go to a therapist and the Doctor asks, "How is your passion?" The wife is Catholic and says, "oh we have plenty of passion." The hubs a protestant and says, "We have none." The jewish Doctor says, "Very interesting." The wife means "suffering" the protestant means "hot for one another" Life can be easily misunderstood, eh? Even with all this knowledge of "the passion" it was a movie about Jesus suffering. I still hated that it was not done in English and had I not been under a rock and known it was a big downer about the beatings of Christ -- I may have skipped it.

"To whom also he showed himself alive after his passion, by many infallible proofs. --Acts i. 3." I never knew that meant after all his suffering. I never knew passion meant suffering. I thought it was a "strong feeling". Learn something knew everyday! --- --- --- --- --- If I knew that THE PASSION was about the garden to the grave -- that portion only -- I would have understood it better or choose not to go. My Protestant husband and I drove home sickened by the whole thing. He kept saying, "Why didn't they show some of his miracles and the cool things he did?" I kept saying, "Where was the risen Christ?" I had no idea "The Passion" was the period from the garden to the grave. I was raised Lutheran then I was Pentecostal, then that whole cult thing, now I go to a Baptist church and I NEVER heard the period between the garden and the grave called "the passion". I admit I did not pay a lot of attention in the classes, but I don't think the Protestant church teaches that, or at least often enough for MY retention. Surely, my expectations would have been very different had I known this... I kept thinking why is Mel only focusing on these horrible beatings? Enough already. If I knew "The Passion" kind of meant "The beating, suffering and crucifixion of Christ" I would have felt Mel DID capture that and capture it very well. Linda Z go see it and see if you see him as victorious. You may. I did not. I felt so badly for him I wanted to yell at the screen, "STOP beating him!" To me, the terrible things that Jesus went through are really only understood when we look at WHY he did it. Jesus’ life in whole - I think. To just show that horrible part was too horrific for words... to me - Protestant that I am. I guess the x-Catholics did understand it FAR better than we (my hubs and I) did. They were brought up around the suffering of Christ more than this Protestant ever was. I recall my Catholic friends speaking of their Catholic guilt and I still have NO idea what they are talking about. A friend of mine told me she wore something called a scapula(?) It was a necklace that would scrape her neck and kind of leave a brush burn and this was to bring her closer to Christ. So, I just had her sign the green card and get out of that whole thing! :)--> ha ha ha So, I do not understand why people really want to focus just on Christ's suffering. I would have preferred a more balanced look at Christ. Maybe Mel will do "the resurrection".... :)-->

We walked out and went to another flick. Yawn!

Hope you said That is exactly how I felt and what was missing to me-- But I did not know "the passion" is a catholic phrase for the period from the garden to the grave. That part of Jesus's life was horrible and you do see how horrible. I wish the resurection was shown. Maybe Mel should have called it something like "the passion and resurection" and included it. To me the whole thing about Jesus is the fact that he did that for us and then GOT UP FROM THE DEAD as the risen and victorious Christ.
-
Silly Of course you are entitled or even subtitled to an opinion. :)--> I just got off the phone with my Catholic friend. Now, this may have been brought up as I did not read the thread. I saw the movie and posted... "The passion" is the time perod from the garden to the burial. I, not being catholic, thought it was about Jesus's passion for us. My friend said no it is about the period he was betrayed and beaten and they crucified him! So, being as it is a movie about that "specific time period" then it was done well. The resurection was not apart of that period. I did not know it was a catholic thing... So, he did show "that period" very well. As I said, I thought the passion was about "the passion of Christ" and was sick they did not show much of the risen Christ. So, now that I know it was a time period that he was showing (and that is why the resurection was just about not represented) I would say it was very well done. BUT I still take issue with the subtitles. I need a big DUH on my head!

Raf I love you but I disagree. The subtitles are distracting. sometimes they are not on the screen long enough to read... When I was crying, I had to remove my glasses then I could not see the sub titles... If you KNOW the story of Jesus you can follow it. I was hoping it would be a movie to take folks that do NOT know the story and perhaps they could see the Jesus who saved us. I wanted this to be my favorite movie of all time. I went there ready to be in Mel’s corner, I left feeling he missed it. All I saw was this poor guy get the crap beaten out of him for over two hours. I saw NO power in this Jesus. It was depressing to me. I did not feel the victory of the resurrection as it was a tiny little bleep at the very VERY end of a long tortured man named Jesus. Now my husband who has nothing to do with TWI - having never been involved hated it and thought it portrayed a defeated Christ. One of the things in writing and film I learned is to NOT take your people out of the story. That is why the shaky camera did not last. It made the viewer “pull out” of the story and realize you were watching "camera work". Or a story that uses unfamiliar words, the reader has to lay the book down and go seek a dictionary. It PULLS the reader out of the story. The subtitles - to me - pulled me out of the story and hindered me from really feeling like I was there. I could not get lost in the film because of the subtitles. And if I just watched it, knowing the story, to me it was like watching a guy get pulverized in an ultimate fighting championship or something. It is important for us to know what Jesus went through for us, but to me, the resurection has to be a larger part of the story to balance out all the vilolence and to drive home the point that Jesus accomplished our salvation. I do not think that is WAY brain but Christian. If you think it is a feel good movie and you go to feel good about Jesus -- Well, you may not feel that way when you leave.

I just saw it and was VERY disappointed. First, I did not like having to read everything as they spoke in whatever. Secondly, I did not feel the power of Christ when I left. I just watched him get beaten up for two hours and four minutes. Then, for about one and a half seconds you see Jesus get up from the dead. If it were done in ENGLISH and they would have dedicated at least 15 minutes to Christ rising I would have liked it. As it stands, I left feeling like I should have done something to help Jesus Christ. I should have left a powerful movie like that saying "Look at what he did for me." I left wanting to go defend him and if another person tried to whip him I wanted to go whip them. I did not see the power of Christ -- but it was a heck of a look at crucifing him. Yes, I saw how he suffered. I saw it for over two hours. They should have dedicated more time to the risen Christ... My opinion Sorry -- Mel. I would not see it again or tell anyone to see it. (((Jesus))) I am so sorry what happened to you! [This message was edited by Dot Matrix on February 29, 2004 at 15:59.]
