Sounds like legislation Red, overfed, Mary Jo dead as he fled, Jack & Bobby dead - we got him instead, Ted Kennedy introduced a few years back. You'd think somebody might care. At least the bill was defeated. -
I know about the love-dove stuff, but when you get down to brass tacks, isn't the jihad-or-death mentality what Jesus & Paul expected? How did the 12 disciples die, by the way? Christianity never would have survived if those early guys hadn't been willing to take up "the cross." One way or another, they died on it too. Wierwille was right, frankly. He exploited that "truth" for his own dirty purpose, but it's no less true just because he was a rotten, philandering, egotistical, two-faced scumbag. (Did I leave anything out? Yeah, plenty.) Christianity is a gruesome religion, if ya think about it. Does Islam have any more blood on its hands? The Corps was a cake walk.

I looked for a thread title but didn't search the word. I see Zixar did one, with the same title. Missed it. It's a superhero movie for people who don't generally like them.

What a fun movie, and with a good message. The bad guy (Syndrome) was one we can all relate to. His hair is worth the rental charge. Some of the movie's plot elements were less than original, but it had a refreshing way of laughing at itself, so it didn't matter. If there's a sequel, I hope it can match this one.

I could almost feel the insanity creeping into that brilliant mind. I enjoyed his view of the world, seeing the world below him, whether landscapes or "just movie stars." I agree with laleo. It was a ride without a destination, a theme-park experience. Worthwhile, for what it was.

I met the individual on the right at a "public ex" in NYC so very long ago, along with his lovely wife. He was wearing the requisite suit and nametag at the time. Martindale may have been there too, but I'm not sure. Looks like he's enjoying life. He deserves it. Recent photo is from the NY Social Diary website. I have to admit, I didn't expect to find anyone I've ever met on this particular site, but there you go. I'm sure he was telling everyone about the time he once met satori. I'm not sure why he's wearing the drapes.

I wasn't raised in the Way, but my dad had his own thing and it became difficult to deal with. I think joining the Way was a "rebellion" of sorts against his own beliefs. Only recently has he, at age 87, stopped with the rants about what's wrong with the world. You know, he's a smart guy, and many of his observations and beliefs are valid, up to a point. Where he goes off the deep end is in his fanatical adherence to that dogma. He doesn't see it. Never did. But it's his anchor. I don't know how your parents will grow or change, but if they left the Way, they are still capable. You should become more familiar with the Way's history, as told here. Ask them if they knew about... Passing of the Patriarch, for instance. I think you're better off with some degree of confrontation, not hell-bent yelling, but honest confrontation, than just agreeing to disagree. They are family, not strangers. What you don't regain, you will lose anyway, so you have little to lose. You have a little homework to do if you've only been here a short while. Get familiar. Find your voice. Other Way kids may have similar experiences, but they are not you, as they would also be quick to point out. Learn as much as you can, then trust your instincts. That is just my opinion. Don't take it if it doesn't ring true for you.

Pistachio ice cream makes me queasy. Not the flavor, just the thought of it.

Didn't see V. Preferred Independence Day by far. Raf, I'm beginning to think Crash was just a weird coincidence.

Raf, this wasn't a question of willingness to suspend belief. Spielberg was asking (or just expecting) us to suspend our intelligence. Certain kinds of entertainment work just fine with that caveat, but science fiction isn't one of them, for me anyway. A good science fiction movie builds an extraordinary experience upon ordinary ones. The ordinary ones need to be consistent with our own experience to create a sound point of departure, or else the extraordinary elements lose all their power to surprise us. It might be a good movie to bring a date if you plan on paying more attention to her than the Martians - a good drive-in flick.

Proof that the system works!

More spoilers... I haven't read the book either. I'm sure the screenplay made plenty of changes. So why not make positive changes? Spielberg has shown a great sense of story in previous films, but not here. This was more like a TV movie script with a Hollywood budget. The movie explained next to nothing. If these aliens were so far superior in intelligence, why did they use such an inefficient means of eliminating humanity, using gigantic tripods to zap us into those smoldering rags, one by one? Why didn't they know about germs? Why did they agree to be in this stupid movie? Tim Robbins' ambulance driver was supposed to be "everyman." Losing his family and way of life had driven him mad. I got the impression he was probably always nuts, and the aliens helped him get in touch with his inner creep-o. His (off camera, Duncanesque) killing was more "McBeth" than MacBeth. Little or no suspense. Would you have gotten onto the big, slow, brightly lit ferry with tripods closing in from every direction? I don't think that was very smart. And yet, hundreds were struggling to get aboard, as if the things that had just destroyed cities by zapping every little thing that moved wouldn't notice as it crossed to... the other side, at 6 knots. And why did the jetliner have to crash right on top of TC and the kids? Were they crashing everywhere? How come? The lightening storms were over.

The oracle says... prunes.

I have consulted the oracle. Here is what it means: You may be coming into some money in the next several weeks. Certain family members may disagree with your approach to an ongoing issue but if you stand your ground, you will prevail. Tuesday and Wednesday may present romantic possibilities, but don't be too assertive. Your partner may need some time to see your best side. A stitch in time saves nine. Louis, Louis will place in the 8th at Aquaduct. Eat more fruit. That'll be $20.

My grandfather used to say, "I scream, you scream We all scream, for ice cream." Would everybody please just stop screaming? He didn't mean it literally.

Divorced from reality.

Moving threads isn't so much censorship as housekeeping. A while back we had a proliferation of specialized forums. Some successful, some not. Maybe the need isn't there for so many. The "Open" forum is a pretty effective melting pot.

Yes, nice try Krysilis, or should I just call you by your real name? Moriarty!

Same old story - great effects, stupid script. Another screenplay written by a damn focus group. Spielberg either lost his edge, or had nothing to do with the actual direction. H.G. Wells would be offended, especially since his copyright has expired and he wouldn't make a dime. (I think he wrote it.)

Don't worry Jonny. At least two people read that forum every year.
