  1. Before we get shut down for a political debate, let's let Raf come up with the next round. George
  2. Actually, Hoover was a progressive early on. He became more conservative later in life. George
  3. From Wikipedia highlight mine): Born to a Quaker family in West Branch, Iowa, Hoover grew up in Oregon. He was one of the first graduates of the new Stanford University in 1895. He took a position with a London-based mining company working in Australia and China. He rapidly became a wealthy mining engineer. In 1914, the outbreak of World War I, he organized and headed the Commission for Relief in Belgium, an international relief organization that provided food to occupied Belgium. When the U.S. entered the war in 1917, president Woodrow Wilson appointed Hoover to lead the Food Administration. He became famous as his country's "food czar". After the war, Hoover led the American Relief Administration, which provided food to the starving millions in Central and Eastern Europe, especially Russia. Hoover's wartime service made him a favorite of many progressives, and he unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination in the 1920 U.S. presidential election. Hoover served as the secretary of commerce under presidents Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Hoover was an unusually active and visible Cabinet member, becoming known as "Secretary of Commerce and Under-Secretary of all other departments". He was influential in the development of air travel and radio. He led the federal response to the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927. Hoover won the Republican nomination in the 1928 presidential election and defeated Democratic candidate Al Smith in a landslide. So, while not having won any previous election, he was well-known for the work he did with other administrations. George
  4. Donald Trump is a rarity in that he is one US President never to have held an elective office or a military command. Presidents who had never held an elective office but DID have military commands were Zachary Taylor, US Grant, and Dwight Eisenhower. Who is the other President never to have had an elective office or military command? (He WAS a Secretary of Commerce.) George
  5. Someone to Watch Over Me Desperate Hours The Mighty Quinn George
  6. Clue? George BTW, The Apostle starred Robert Duvall, not DeNiro
  7. Lee Marvin referred to this movie as "crap" and "just a dummy moneymaker", although he enjoyed the film. The movie has nothing to do with war, he stressed, and he was very pleased that he got to do The Big Red One (1980), which mirrored his own wartime experiences. Marvin also said many of the actors in this film were too old to play soldiers. One scene required Lee Marvin to drive an armored truck with Charles Bronson riding shotgun. With cameras poised, Marvin was a no-show. He was eventually tracked down to a pub in Belgravia and was hauled into a car and taken to the studio, where coffee was poured down his throat. When on arrival he fell out of the car, Bronson flipped, "I'm going to f---ing kill you, Lee". George
  8. When the star was negotiating his salary, he had his choice between more money per week and no ownership stake in the show, or less money per week and part ownership. He chose the ownership deal and never regretted it considering the series' durable popularity in syndication gave him a regular income even as he struggled with being typecast by it. When asked how he developed his trademark voice for his character, the star said that it came from watching "The Thin Man" movies starring William Powell and Myrna Loy. After hearing Powell repeatedly say, "Asta! Asta!" he decided to imitate his voice for the character. Rumors that the female co-star's character was originally to be given a more suggestive name were debunked by the actress. Talk show host Johnny Carson made cameo appearances twice during the show's run. Once as a train conductor, and again as a royal herald in a foreign King's court. The female co-star was initially reluctant to commit to the series. She refused to sign a traditional five-year contract, and signed for only four episodes. After filming the pilot, she agreed to commit to the series, but signed a three-year contract. After the third season, she agreed to sign for two more years. The star developed his character's voice and (primary) catch phrase while a cast member on the Bill Dana Show. George
  9. Lots of tattoos? Foxx always wore sweaters on "Sanford and Son" because the producers didn't want his tattoos to show. George
  10. My roommate in college tried to work up a "Who's on First" parody with 60s/70s bands. "Guess Who's playing tonight." "Who" "No, Guess Who." "The Band"? "Yes." "Yes is playing tonight?" "No. GUESS WHO." etc. George
