  1. You are a gentleman and a scholar. "In questions of this sort there are two things to be observed. First, that the truth of the Scriptures be inviolably maintained. Secondly, since Scripture doth admit of diverse interpretations, that no one cling to any particular exposition with such pertinacity that, if what he supposed to be the teaching of Scripture should afterward turn out to be clearly false, he should nevertheless still presume to put it forward, lest thereby the sacred Scriptures should be exposed to the derision of unbelievers and the way of salvation should be closed to them." George
  2. Actually, that's right. I was just about to come back and correct it, but you got in first. George
  3. I'm guessing that this is a translation of Ovid's Aeneid. Aeneas was a Trojan who (according to the Aeneid) established Rome. Of course, the Aeneid was in Latin in dactylic hexameter, and this is English in iambc pentameter... George
  4. I DON'T have the freedom "to live as I choose," and neither do you. I have to follow laws. I prefer those that are in accord with God's Word, because I believe those are most beneficial to mankind. I have the freedom to vote for those laws I desire (either directly or representationally through elected officials); but it's meaningless if a judge can decide that HE thinks the law is inappropriate and toss it out. George
  5. I never said that man's laws were God-given. I said that God gave man laws. Those, of course, ARE the ones in the Scriptures. George
  6. Which is why God gave man laws -- to protect people. Live outside His laws, you're asking for trouble. George
  7. "According to my observations, there is sufficient reason for greater optimism." "You took the words right out of my mouth." "Unfortunately, extinction is often the natural end of evolution..." "Get some rest." "You may think you are tougher than everyone else, but I can go without sleep just as long as you can." "Don't make me laugh, Starfleet." "I feel for the robots, but what you're proposing is exactly the kind of tampering the Prime Directive prohibits. We know almost nothing about these creatures, or the race that built them. What would be the consequences of increasing their population, both to their own civilization and others in this quadrant? Who are we to swoop in, play god, and then continue on our way without the slightest consideration of the long-term effects of our actions?" "Wait a minute. If both sides called a truce, then why didn't they stop you from fighting?" "They attempted to do so." "And?" "We terminated the Builders." George

  14. "He will tire of you, like all the others." "And if he does not?" "You think you know a story, but you only know how it ends. To get to the heart of the story, you have to go back to the beginning." "Is this not Mademoiselle Anne? Enchanté. His Eminence has told me all about you, but he did not tell me how beautiful you are. For a Frenchman, that is almost a crime." "It would appear that the King's whore is the cause of all this. Why doesn't someone just -- get rid of her?" "Qui tacet, consentire videtur." George

  22. I was very happy initially, and probably through about my first seven years with TWI (1978-1985). Things got progressively harder, and I got less happy. I have a feling that one could probably do a good regression analysis on the factors affecting happiness in TWI. A close fellowship probably would be positively correlated, but "level of service" (i.e., TC, Corps, Staff) and length of time in TWI would be negatively correlated. It's probably also a function of calendar year, but I don't think that's as straightforward, because it seems that there are those quite happy NOW in TWI. George
