I didn't want to take off on a tangent in the "Purges" thread, but something Word Wolf posted struck a chord: "Witnessing" was to be focused on people who had "all their teeth" and their own cars and so on- effectively, people who had no needs, leaving only people who could be USED by twi and not be expected to need things in return. So, new arrivals were being SCREENED before they joined- which meant new arrivals arrived in MUCH smaller numbers. I distinctly remember my BC mentioning to me at my last ROA (1996?) that "we weren't witnessing to nerds anymore." We should be trying to bring in the more well-to-do of the local populace. I asked if we weren't trying to help people anymore. I don't remember his fumbled answer, but it was something on the order of "rich people need the Word, too." When did this become the official doctrine for witnessing? George

In 1979, I was in my first full year with Twig Fellowships and taking the Advanced Class. I was 23 also. I would consider those some of MY good times. I'm very sorry how horrible it must have been for you. :( George

the way international and muddy waters
GeorgeStGeorge replied to brainfixed's topic in About The Way
In addition to the straw man (in the sense of misrepresenting your opponent's point and then knocking down the altered version), a common diversion was the false dilemma: give a person two choices, when in fact there are several alternatives: "Do you agree with LCM, or are you possessed?" Obviously, there are times when it was possible to disagree with him and not be possessed. George -

I hardly ever watched the show, but I remember an episode of "Mad About You" where Helen Hunt was beating Paul Reiser in her sleep. Is that it? George -

Also, the onus in THIS thread is on the clue-giver to pick a song that just about everybody knows from the first line. I may have heard this song, but it sure doesn't ring any bells with me. George -

Congratulations! How wonderful for you! The Countess and I now have a granddaughter, too, born last Sunday morning. Wonderful feeling, isn't it? George

Denholm Elliott is one of those actors easy to recognize, but hard to remember where else youve seen him! Finally, I remembered Raiders of the Lost Ark Harrison Ford Clear and Present Danger George

Name that Star Trek Episode

No one actually mentioned the series (the original one); and though hiway has the title correct, I'll give it to Steve!, because he was close enough. George -
I just googled "$200 more than Carmax" and got a hit: AutoTrader.com George

That's it, of course. A delightful movie from my youth. "Great Rays," indeed! George

"Unfortunately, Starfleet General Order 104, Section B, leaves me no choice; Paragraph 1A clearly states—" "To blazes with regulations! You can't let him take command when you know he's wrong!" "Upon finding your first officer reluctant to take aggressive action–" "You mean you're the lunatic who's responsible for almost destroying my ship?..." "I told you, I am in command and I will give the orders, captain; we are going to turn and attack." "Matt, where's your crew?" "On the third planet." "There is no third planet." "Don't you think I know that? There was, but not anymore! They called me, they begged me for help – four hundred of them! I couldn't... I-I couldn't..." George -
Go ahead, Raf. I really wasn't sure if your first response was an attempt to be funny! Obviously, the answer is... George

Correct. I'm not sure who recorded it, other than Roger. George -
Apparently, no one got it from me, so it must be as Word Wolf mentioned. It's not a problem if you open it, only if you "register" to "see the pictures." George

Something else occurred to me. I know that there's another business like Carmax that promises you at least $200 more than Carmax for your old car. I know they're at least in the Houston area, if not nationwide. I heard their ad on the radio. (Conservative talk channel, though, so maybe that's why Mr. P-Mosh is unaware of them.) ;) George

Was it "One Small Ship"? The last exchange reminds me of that episode. George -

And Badfinger tried awfully hard to sound like the Beatles. Anyway... Trailer for sale or rent... George -
Yeah. This really isn't the Pictionary thread. How about holding this one for over there and giving us some quotes, instead? :) George

Are you being sarcastic, or do you really not get the answer? George

I occasionally have pangs of conscience about letting this one slip, but a beer or two takes care of that. If anyone would like to give it a shot, feel free. George

Obviously, Carmax should be expected to make a profit for re-selling a used auto. There is, of course, the demurrage (overhead) involved in keeping your car on their lot until it sells. Is $8000 a reasonable difference? It seems high, but I don't know. It's like comic books. I can expect to PAY Overstreet prices when I BUY books, but (except for my really high-value stuff, which will appreciate enough to be worth the buyer paying full price), I can't expect to GET those prices when I SELL to a dealer.
