Ala, my cute little frog-friend...don't give up...keep on trying! If you need help, just let me know! Rick

Dobro is a name brand, now owned by Gibson. The name comes from the Dopyera Brothers, who made the original ones. If you want more info, click HERE. Rick

You mean bouzouki? Isn't that a greek instrument that's kinda sorta like a mandolin? Heck, I'm not laughing! I think that would be cool to learn! Yep, I play a resonator. Not to be confused with a Dobro. If you find an authentic Dobro, expect to have to take out a second mortgage to buy it. :) Here are a couple pics I found on websites of the one like mine. They don't really do it justice though. The detail in the stamping on it is beautiful! And so is the palm tree inlay on the headstock. I need another one though, as some stuff I play, I use GBDGBD tuning, but on other stuff, I like open E.

If only I had someone to hide MY plastic. But yeah, it IS sweet! Rick

Well, I had decided that early this summer, I was going to buy either a LP, or a 335. But now that I've seen the 60'th anniversary Strat, looks like the LP will be next year. Check it out HERE Rick

I remember those Coolchef. My first electric was a K-Mart brand, I think it was called a Tiesco, or something like that.

Heck, I didn't mean to kill the thread. I'm only an amature, sorry if I talked too much. :(

Hey Sunesis, have you had the opportunity to try the Dimebag Darrel "Dean From Hell" yet? I've read the reviews and it sounds like one hell of a shredder! I'm a strat person for the most part. But I may get another LP. Had one that I bought brand new in 76, but lost it to a pawn shop when I got divorced. Same with a 57 ES-125 I found in a pawn shop for only 300 bucks. I've just started collecting guitars again in the past 5 years. K-Yari Alvarez, Alvarez 12 string, Texas Special Strat, and a chrome Dean Resonator. Got some other odds and ends, keyboard, mandolin, and recently a violin.(which is presenting me with one HELL of a learning curve, by the way :) ). My favorite amp is an all tube Yamaha that was a Mike Soldano design. Thing is small, but sounds sweet! Mic it with an SM-57 and it rocks! Rick

Nah, the calluses come after the blisters wear off. But seriously, you can buy a finger exerciser, that has optional callous caps you can buy to put on it. Has ridges, like guitar strings, that will build them up. But honestly, it's a waste of money. Best way to toughen up your fingertips is practice, practice, practice. You get the extra added benefit of learning while your doing it. :) Pace yourself...when you first start, play till they get tender, then stop. Next morning, you will yell and say, "Damn, this $*@! hurts!" Play a little more that day anyway. Before you know it, you will have finger tips that are tough as nails. In theory, anyway. As far as models, Yamaha and Fender both have entry leve guitars that are ok. But again, no matter what brand you buy, make sure that you get it set up by a professional, so the action(the distance between the strings and the neck) is set as low as possible without fret buzz. as far as models, these are just my opinions. Maybe Socks, Diazbro, Ted, or Satori can reccomend some other entry level guitars for you to choose from. Rick

Only advice I can offer is, don't buy a real cheap guitar. It will be harder to play, strings will likely buzz, and you will get frustrated easily. Now as far as buying a good used guitar, that's a good way to go, but unless you buy it from a music store, plan on paying an additional 50 bucks or so to have a shop set it up for you, and put on a fresh set of strings. A good case is a must. Doesn't have to be a hard-shell case but a case (not gig bag) should be part of your purchase. Also, if you live in a real dry area, or have forced-air heat and no humifier, you should buy a case humidifier. I learned this the hard way, by the way. They only cost about 12-14 bucks and can save you a lot of money in the long run. If your going for new, Alvarez (not the K-Yari line though) has some pretty good guitars for around 250 bucks. I have a K-Yari, but they are a lot more expensive...they are the hand made line. Mine was made and signed by Kazou himself. :) As far as strings, unless your going to play classical, you probably won't want nylon strings. Hand size, I have fairly short fingers, but you learn to work with what ya got. :) Rick

Tom, the ad was form a 1939 Montgomery Ward catolog. Found it on the internet on a page about Recording King guitars. The only thing we know about the one I have is my Uncle had it before he left for WW II. The one I have looks identical the the second one in the pic, which is the zoomed-in pic below. 1939 would probably be close to the date of mine. Rick

I don't have a digital camera to take pictures of the real thing, but this is the oldest guitar I own. It belonged to my Uncle Frank, who was killed in WW II. Although it has more than it's share of battle scars, it still plays great, and has the coolest rockabilly twang to it! It is also the guitar I learned to play on. The Recording King was actually made by Gibson, and sold in department stores. These old B&W pics don't do it justice. Has a sunburst finish that has held up well after all these years, except for things you would expect, like the finish being worn off the back of the neck close to the top, and top of the body where your arm would lay while playing. Between my Uncle's and myself, there have been many thousands of hours of music played on it. I've learned that it's worth "slightly" more now than the original purchase price. :) It will never be for sale though. I will find someone in the family to hand it down to one day.

700 bucks is WAY too much for a Mexican Strat. I have a USA made Texas Special strat that I only paid about 1000 for. The Mexican strats can usually be had for 400-500. Rick

Never heard Neil do it. Like I said, it happens, just not often. But hey, George, you taught me something new! Didn't know anyone else ever did that song! Wanted to add...that's Amazing! OK, you had to follow the Amazing Sea Monkeys On Mars thread to get that. :) Tom Strange, you still looking here? :) Rick
-
Bruce re-released it then, in the 80's. If it flopped in 72, maybe that's why I never heard of him doing it till the 80's. :) But I think it was 77 when MM released thier version (although I could be wrong once again...getting old and forgetful I guess!) :( Rick
-
Moony wins the prize! Well, almost! Yes, the song was written by Bruce Springsteen or, as I like to call him, B.S. (don't like him, can you tell? :) ) What was unusual and again, not unique, is that MM had a BIG hit with the song before B.S. ever recorded it. He didn't record it himself till sometime in the 80's I believe. And his version wasn't much of a hit. If you heard it, and were a fan of MM's version, you would understand why. In other words, B.S. covered his own song. Rick Oh, and yeah, hiway got the "kiss this guy" reference!

Since we were talking synth music, HERE is one of the better ones I remember. Now for a gazillion points (point value 1 gazzilionth of one cent) who was the band? And what made this song special in the recorded music field? Special, not unique, as I'm sure it has happend other times, but not often. Rick
-
Yeah, but only cause there was a bad moon on the rise that night. :) And welcome to the thread Ken! How bout this one...Scuse me while I kiss this guy. And thanks moony, but I may be in error about Arp v Moog. Going to have to check and see. Rick
-
Hi Cowgirl! Good to see you here again! Sudo, you sure it was a Moog? Sounds like a polyphonic synth to me, and Arp made those way before Moog did. Forgot to mention I LOVE that song and a lot of other stuff by Van Morrison! Rick

I don't understand what you said here. You mean that Jesus didn't know that he would be resurrected? Just asking, maybe I'm being a little slow here. :) Rick -
Hey waterbuffalo!

Thank you for your reply Mark. I was under the impression that EVERYTHING the pope said was considered ex cathedra. So I learned something. :) I also agree that MOG worship happens with all faiths, not just Catholic. And I also agree that there are good priests, and bad ones. I was never Catholic, but got involved in a program called Search, that was sponsered by the Catholic church when I was in high school, and because of that, played guitar in a lot of guitar masses. I met many young priests who were just out of seminary, and full of great ideals, who hadn't becomed jaded, as it seems a lot of older priests become. See, I don't believe in any "religion" anymore. Got kicked out of a church when I was younger cause I was dating the preacher's daughter, and he didn't like me. Got kicked out of the way and told not to come back till I was ready to be a disciple. So I'm kind of done with organized religion. But in my opinion, Catholic, Protastant, Luthern, The Way, splinter group, or (insert religion here) we all worship the same God. Seems to me that that is the most important part. OK, so I'll stop rambling now. We now return you to your regularly scheduled topic. :) Rick

Mark, I would like to ask a question. And I mean this as a serious question, not trying to be combative in any way. But don't you see the way many(maybe most) Catholic's view the Pope as MOG worship? You know, everything he says being excathedra (I think that is the right word) and all that? Again, this is a genuine quesiton, I'm not putting down anyone's religion, just wanted to know your thoughts. Rick

If you haven't figured out Sudo's new "toy", look at the link from the last tune he posted. He now has his very own domain name and server! And he set it up with little help from me, too! Just gave him some advice, and he got it running! Congratulations, Doc! As far as the Western theme he posted, I alway's thought Brisco County, Jr. from the 90's was just a cheap ripoff of that show. Rick
