  1. I know the account you're referring to, but are you certain that is the same veil? I know you're talking about Nearly Headless Nick's Deathday party on Halloween, where Harry, Ron, and Hermonie are the only "live ones!" there.... Could that veil, in fact, be a symbolic one? Also, I know that Harry was talking to Nick about Sirius as a qhost... but still, from his conversation with him, I had the impression that Nick seemed to think Sirius had, "moved on". By the way, I think that the portraits do have the memories/knowledge that they had in life, as Dumbledore would be heard talking with them (consulting, getting counsel, whatever) in his office. They had to have been able to carry more than just their personalities or essence of the person they were a painting of....
  2. The Celtic also talk of a veil when it comes to passing on to death - so, that too, could contribute to where the author got the idea from.
  3. WW - How was this foreshadowed at the party... I forget? As far as Sirus coming back... I sort of doubt it. Reason why - because of the conversation that Harry had with Nick after he lost Sirius. Harry also broke the mirror that he had been given by Sirus for communication with him - it was the same mirror that James Potter and Sirius had used to communicate - Harry had stuffed it in the back of his trunk and forgotten about it.
  4. Okay - you are right about the curse, but I did say he didn't "mean" it enough - MEAN, as in the two ways you can take it - with hate, and with meaning... plus, Bella says something about he hadn't been taught (trained) how to use it and she could really show him how it was done. - Remember there's Dark Arts training as well - and schools that specialize in it.
  5. Thank you, Tom! I'm excited about it - I spent the weekend setting it up and getting the first ten listing in it. I hit a decent buy at a yard sale on some Knowles collector plates, and entered those in the store. I'm going to get some of the baby clothing I have together, as well as some back-to-school children's clothing and list those. My goal is to make $125/week off it - that's all I need - to stay home with both the kiddos. I'm psyched!
  6. I can tell you that they have been inspected and rated very highly. They do comply withi OSHA standards and the staff is trained on the regulations as well.
  7. Johnny -- What a great memory to have of the ROA! ------------------- Maybe it's me, but anyone notice that when posters have had warm memories about the ROA, it wasn't the teaching or anything "leadership" did, but the interactions we had with "joe believer"....???
  8. Did you hear that whooshing noise? It was another deadline flying by!
  9. When I was living in ME, we had the responsibility of manning the shower tents. I thought that was going to be the worst job - boy, was I wrong. I loved it! My take on it was this: You'd eventually see anyone you might be looking for and then some there at the shower tents and if they didn't show up then you probably didn't WANT to see them (i.e. they'd by stinky from not showering!)! Later when I was in AL we worked camping - usually manned the West Woods - pretty boring, really. I remember letting a couple of yeah-hoos drive through the West Woods who weren't actually going to the ROA - I think it was WC week and they were "cop-outs"... Oh, well. No harm done. They were thankful and I was too nieve to ask for a bracelet.... I worked with Terry Di!!ard - he was actually pretty cool to work with - no one is blunter than him! Also worked with a guy (black hat) named Bud - he's let me drive the cushman - WHAT FUN! I loved driving in cushmans! When I was in TN we worked Bless Patrol - it wasn't that much fun... we had to watch the Fountian of Living Waters so peopel didn't litter or soak their feet. I hated telling the kids not to play in the water - I felt like "the bad guy" all the time... Not much fun but then that should have been the clue that things were coming to an end, shouldn't it?
  10. Not 100% sure - just a thought really. I'm basing it on the "ancient magic" that Harry's mother envoked when she was slain by Voldemort that put the protective shield on Harry. It was from her love for him that made that shield. Dd is very fond of Harry - he's always had a "grandfatherly" presence with Harry, so I think there may be something like that in the works. Just my thoughts.
  11. The AK curse - this also failed when Harry tried it on Bella because he didn't "mean" it enough. So, it's not some sure-fire thing - the user has to be trained to use it effectively or it will just knock someone over and they'll live to tell about it...
  12. Snape killing Dd: In more than one instance in the series, Dd makes a statement like, "There are some things worse than death," and in another books he says (about Snape), "I'd trust him with my life." So, with that being said... I believe those comments set the grounds for Snape "offing" Dd BUT not as a technical 'murder' (cold blood). Also, I wonder if Dd's 'sacrafice' doesn't count as some 'protection' for Harry in someway later on...
  13. IT WAS BLOCKED when Harry and Voldy dueled at the end of the Goblet of Fire book. Remember, they both had the same core - a phoenix feather - in the wands - brother wands, if you will. Harry was able to get Voldy's wand to do a "reverse" of the AK spell, which showed many of the people (a likeness, ghost, if you will) of them, including Harry's parents.
  14. And I bet their service provider was CompuServ.... satan@cs.com and satansbuttmonkey@cs.com
  15. Many thanks to those of you who bid - I appreciate your business! I will probably be purging a few more things later this month. I'm opening my own eBay store soon and have decided to quit my day job so that I can be home with the kids. I spent the weekend setting it up and eventually it will be a consignment store, specializing in children's clothing. There's nothing like that really in my area, so I think it will be a hit. I've been inspired by the success of this sale and really enjoy selling all together - packaging things up to mail seems to be the hardest part for me, but I'm less than a mile from the post office - good excuse for a walk right? Next I think I'm going to sell my PT Cruiser - anyone interested? :-)
  16. If leadership is able to successfully spin everything so it sounds like it's coming up roses* all the time, then the "disciples" will hang around waiting for "the next big thing", thinking they are doing God's will, and will keep sending their $$ to HQ. Simple as that. The spin part is easy - Prevailing is defined as sugar-coating even the simplest of facts so that they seem real and exciting. For example: There are five people in a Way Disciple family. They go witnessing 40 hours a week and "speak" (this isn't defined as getting a name and phone number like it was with the WOW program - you could just say, "Hi. Nice weather," and it would count!) to approx. 100 people. They get three people to take the class in that year - that's it. Their assignment is for one year. The "prevailing" spin on this would be: "And one family in Atlanta, GA spoke the spoke the Present Truth to over 5,200 residents of that city in one year's time! They spent over 900 hours witnessing the Word of God and undershepherding new disciples into the Promised Land of the Prevailing Word!" Notice those nice fat numbers? Notice the LACK of the NUMBER of CLASSES and NUMBER of GRADS that are mentioned? What they don't say is that there was only a .06% success rate. Of course the lack of success could easily be blamed on some weakness that someone in that WD family had or the hardheartedness of the members of that city, or whatever. Anyhow, that's my take on it - of course some innies don't want to be in but are in situations that are far more complicated, but overall TWI is still selling the same spiritual snake oil. (*"I know you like to think your sh-t don't stink, but lean a little bit closer and even roses smell like doo-do-do" (lyrics) Roses by Outkast)

    Christmas

I had won a very nice eBay auction for some "rescue heroes" toys that Kristopher wanted for his birthday. However, the shipping took forever - the seller was pretty lame about it, but I can't gripe because it was such a good deal.... Kristopher, as usual, got SO MUCH STUFF for his birthday that we practically need an addition for it all - (he's the first grandbaby on hubby's side - which is Greek - so he's the "golden child"). We got him one thing - I think everyone else thought he needed twenty things. The day after his birthday, he says, "Mommy, I want...." "NO! You just had your birthday and you got a lot of new toys. You don't NEED anymore right now. Now, go play." "WWWWHHHAAAAAAAA! But I said! I want! (stomp) I WANT A RESCUE HEROES ROBOT! (POUT.... STOMP!)" That's when I decided he had enough toys. Period. The delayed birthday gift is now going in the basement until Christmas. So, my Christmas shopping is done for one member of the family already! HO! HO! HO!

Andrea - I love your post about your daughter's rational about Santa helping you - you could write a book with that story! LOL!

    Christmas

I love Christmas because of the decorating, the food, watching Kristopher (who's now 4 years old) getting excited about the presents, the food, watching the cats getting excited about the decorations on the tree, the food, and did I mention that I love the food? One of the things I hate about Christmas is the shopping. I did mine online last year and not only got great deals, but had 'stress-free' shopping. I picked no-brainers - L.L.Bean, Amazon, Staples, and Target. That was it! Got it all done on one Sunday afternoon, if I remember correctly. The other thing I hate is taking down the decorations. YUCK! Our house is "open concept" the kitchen and living room are one room - 28'x19' - so it going from being cluttered with cheery things to clean but boring. Since Hubby is the biggest Scrooge I've ever met the festivities are up to me - but I love it anyhow. I can't help it.
  20. We've been doing some of the songs with hand motions - "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and hopscotch. Kristopher got a cute little basketball and net game for the pool which he has been loving. I swear I have more fun with the kid's toys than they do sometimes!
  21. (((Belle))) -- Any news? My thoughts are with you.
  22. One more thing about the WOW pin -- It's from the last year that there was a WOW program. Shortly after we received it we were told we couldn't wear them because there was no longer a WOW program. WOW, University of Life, all that stuff, was considered "old wine skins"... Go figure...
  23. Property?! ROTFLOLPIMP!!!! OMG... hell.... NO! I'm not one for x-spouse slamming because there are two sides to every story. I'm fair to my x by stating that he had some problems that he really had no control over and probably did the best he could under the circumstances... But.... When I went to court for the finalization of our divorce it was in Maine, which has alamony laws. The divorce was uncontested - I didn't even have a lawyer for it, as we had no property - not even a car. I had dressed in a nice, business-like pantsuit for the occasion - as I thought I should (I couldn't believe the people who showed up in ripped sweatpants, but anyhow...) The judge, before granting me the use of my maiden name again, asked, "Are you sure you don't want alamony after all those years?" He seemed to not believe that I just wanted my maiden name - that was it. I made some comment that you couldn't get blood from a turnip, which cracked up the judge. I was granted my divorce, given my maiden name back and left to pay the court fees.
  24. By the way - can anyone tell me the name of the dairy where they got the ice cream that you could get at the Snack Shop at the Rome City Campus? They had the best mint chocolate chip I've ever had - nothing has ever compared to it. Ever.
  25. Jen & Berry's, I mean, Ben & Jerry's is terribly overrated and overpriced. In these parts we have "Shain's of Maine" which is the best ice cream! It's super creamy, natural, and they do fun flavors like "Almond Joy" and "Wild Blueberry". Every summer we take at least one trip to Brown's Ice Cream in York, Maine. They serve Shain's ice cream but they make a flavor that you can't get anywhere else called Danish Cream. It's the purest vanilla in the world - nothing like it. Then we go here (click link) to eat it: http://www.lighthouse.cc/capeneddick/ You just can't beat that!
