Copied from the Skeptic's Dictionary.... backward satanic messages (backmasking) An alleged practice of certain evil people, especially rock musicians, of saying or singing words which, when listened to backward contain evil messages such as "My sweet Satan"* or "Kill yourself." Or they might contain messages such as "it's fun to smoke marijuana"* or "sleep with me, I'm not too young."* Of course, you probably won't hear these messages until somebody first points them out to you. Perception is influenced by expectation and expectation is affected by what others prime you for. Since most people do not listen to their music backward, the belief in such messages seems to be predicated upon one or two false notions. Either [1] the brain can be influenced subliminally by garbled words whose meaning is directly grasped by the subconscious or [2] the conscious mind translates clear speech into reverse speech where the "true" meaning is understood by the subconscious mind. In either case, the subconscious mind allegedly then directs the conscious mind to believe bad things or do bad deeds. There is no evidence that such mechanisms exist. The belief in the existence and efficacy of backward satanic messages probably derives from the ancient practice of mocking Christianity by saying prayers backward at the witch's Sabbath. The belief is mainly popular among certain fundamentalist preachers who cannot look at anything without wondering how Satan is involved. Perception is heavily influenced by one's belief system. We not only see what we want to see and hear what we want to hear, we see what we expect to see. The Beatles used tapes played backward for musical effect in some of their recordings, though they allegedly put in backward or subliminal messages announcing Paul McCartney's death when he was much alive. Jimmy Page, guitarist and occultist, is said to have inserted the backward message "here's to my sweet Satan" into his "Stairway to Heaven" song. The former was clearly intentional; the latter is said to be accidental by many of those who have listened before being told what to listen for. One practical problem emerged with using this backhanded way to communicate: the only way to hear the messages is to destroy your record. Fortunately, the digital age arrived and eliminated that problem while creating another: now it is first-grade simple to find hidden messages in every kind of speech.

Tom - should you say it with some throaty grunts between some of the words? HUMPH?

I'll Be There For You - Bon Jovi (one of the few 80's hair bands still around!) "It's My Life" was a more recent hit - within this decade. BTW - did you ever hear the spoof song to "Living On A Prayer"? It's "Living Off My Hair" - one line goes "Take my advice, make videos with Cher, Ohhh-oooh, we're living off my hair-air...." My hint: Funny how I blind myself I never knew

YES! Can you believe it? I sure can't... Those were the quickest 5 years ever!

Thanks Chef - that's the family - me, hubby, Andreas (the baby), and Kristopher (5 years old).... We turned that place on its ear that day - they're still recovering! LOL! :)

I didn't have a 3x5 card - I had a whole stinkin' manilla file folder, almost half and inch thick that my dotty HFC accidentally left out on a coffee table, in plain sight, that I found! (We were also roommates, at that time.) In it was her recollections of conversations we had - some of it was just 'girl talk' - or so I had thought. She had disclosed infomation about my family, my ex, and even my cat - by faxing it to the LCs! (It was complete with fax cover sheets and fax confirmation sheets, in good order.) There were copies of my 'permission slips' I had to fill out to visit my mom, and my schedules that I turned it - but the personal conversations going to leadership was just too much! I was so mad - but I never confronted her about it. I decided to be guarded from then on and never disclose ANYTHING. I had thought she was my friend - we had both confided in each other - but I hadn't turned around a squealed about her to leadership. Good grief! I also decided to dig in a little - I started saying "no" more when I was asked to be a part of everything (i.e. Limb clean up days - they were home all day - what the hell was that all about?!) and went to social events (non-ministry) when I was asked not to go at the last possible moment. I was gone from there in about 6 months after that - it was an unpleasant awakening, to say the least. This was in 1999 - not that long ago. I bet there's still files on people being kept - what a viper nest that place is, huh?

Catchin' up... Hubby had his first day back at school today and got a neat twist to his gig there. He's going to be teaching a guitar class during one of his free blocks. He's super excited about it and wants to start a program for the next school year that teachs kids to play guitar who are considered 'drop out' risks - troubed kids, in other words. He's thinking of doing it as an after school thing and of making it an incentive program of sorts - and for no stipend. That's just cool. He's an awesome teacher - math or guitar - and really knows his stuff. He's my teacher on bass and he's a good one. I've taken music lessons - mostly for flute - and had several teachers, all with different styles (from the sweetest to the meanest, and everything in between.) Hubby is one of the best teachers and I'm amazed at how far I've come on bass, considering I didn't play at all before we bought the thing! BTW - just found out that Allman Bros are coming to town - with Derek Trucks. We don't have funds to go, sadly enough, but sometimes we get free tixs cuz we're frequent flyers... keepin' my fingers crossed...

Paw is one of the most self-less people I know. He's forgivin', longsufferin', and just a heck of a nice guy! Paw has a great sence of humor and has a wonderful voice - melts a woman's heart to listen to it! (You should do radio Paw - you have an NPR or better voice!)

I love how on Level 5 you can set the large LED screen on fire if you hit it with a ball more than once - LOL! Methinks you have too much time on your hands, my friend! :)

Cheers to Sudo and Suda, who adopted me shortly before I left TWI, and only thought I was a spy for a nano-second. (I think.) Certainly made jumping off the TWI Gotta-Get-Outta-Here ledge much easier! :)

Hugs to you! I'm sure that talking about your living situation and your health were both very hard for you, but there is a supportive group here - as you can see! Breathe that sweet air of freedom! Linda Z gave you some good advice - I don't know your body type or build, but 80 lbs for an adult is dangerously low. Promise me you'll take care of you - yeah, it's selfish of me, but I've seen you on the boards here and at Waydale and elsewhere for 6 years now - you gotta stick around - you're like furniture and I want it to stay that way! :) More hugs to you!

Chef -- I think you're thinking of Story Land, in Glen, NH - that's the park that's next door to Heritage. The sad thing is that Heritage is closing it's doors this year because it's not very popular - probably because it's educational! This is their last season. We went to Story Land in early June - the boys had a blast! It was the baby's first time to anything like that and before we even got thru the gate, he was jumping for joy in the stroller - it was like, he didn't know WHAT it was, but he KNEW it was for HIM! Here's the pic of us at Story Land... all of us!

We're back! What a long, strange trip it was... First off, I had no idea that travel with two small children could be so much.... work. There was no rest to be had during the trip, other than when THEY were sleeping. But we made sure the days were packed enough so that they slept well at night! We stayed in Twin Mt, NH, at The Patio Motor Court. It used to be owned by my sister and brother-in-law, so I knew what the cabins would be like, etc. It had just changed owners recently and the new owner is really sprucing the place up. These types of motor courts are a dime a dozen in the White Mts - like stepping back in time to the 1950's or 60's. We had a nice little 2-bedroom cabin that was only $79/night. Can't beat that price! And it had everything - coffee maker, toaster, microwave oven, stove top, fridge, etc, that you'd need. All we had to bring was the food! We started out on Friday at Six Gun City, because they have a water slide park. Friday was the nicest and warmest day, so it was a good choice. They even had a water slide just right for Andreas, who is now 18 months old. The kids enjoyed many of the other rides and attractions there. It's not a very pc place, as you'll see little kids running around with cap guns, cork guns, and all that - which didn't bother me - but that's not something you'll probably see at Disney, ya know... On Saturday, we decided to go to Santa's Village - it was huge. The bill to get thru the gate was also huge - it was $74, with Andreas being free! I don't see how families can afford those prices! Anyhow, the boys had a blast and got to do a lot - but I couldn't get Kristopher to sit on Santa's lap - "I'll see him at the mall later." Too funny. There was an absolute downpour all day Sunday. It was miserable. So, we went for a ride to The Balsams, which was great from the front. The funny thing is that we accidentally entered through the delivery enterance, and ended up at the back of the resort. It was a dump. The front, if you look at the pictures on the web site, looks very majestic - just breathtaking. We walked around a little and went into one of the gift shops - to find they sold Cats In The Cradle Soap, which is made by our neighbour! LOL! The interesting thing about that part of NH is that it's so close to the Canadian boarder that the signs were in French and English. That's not something you'll see very often in NH - I remember seeing it a lot in Maine, but not NH. The Balsams is also located in Dixville Notch, which is the first town in the nation to voice it's choice for President, both in the primary and general elections. This means that they have to close the polls just minutes after midnight on election days. Since there's less than 30 residents in the town, that's not a real problem, because the residents of the town can easily meet at the polls (which is at - you guessed it - The Balsams) to cast their vote and then the polls close immediately and the results are reported. Kinda neat. Sunday night we took the boys bowling. Even the baby got to bowl and he beat his big brother by 5 points. The bowling ally had a ramp that Andreas could use. We set the ball up on the ramp and Andreas just had to push it - something he did with great gusto, once he figured out the relationship of the ball to the pins. He loved it! On Monday, we hiked The Flume - Andreas rode in backpack on Hubby's back. Kristopher was a great hiker - he really enjoyed the outing. I'd been there several times, but still felt like I was seeing for the first time. There's nothing like it. It's just the most beautiful place. In a selfish way, I wished that it wasn't so commercial - it was a busy day, and not the type of setting where you could admire the moss on the trees or whatever. Some people just seemed to be in a big hurry to get from one part to the next. If you check out the link that I posted, make sure you look at the photos of the Flume in the winter - brrrrrrrrr! From there, we went to Cannon Mt and went up the mt in an aerial tram. It was 46 degrees at the top of the mt, and we were in the clouds, which meant it like walking through a mist the whole time. The top of the mountain was interesting - the rocks, trees, plants - looked different. We didn't spend a lot of time at the top - it was too cold and wet for the kids. It felt like November up there! We also visited the ski museum at the base of Cannon, which is free and a very nice museum - lots of information and great displays. Then, we started heading home. After we got home, you could hear a collective sigh of relief from all four of us - the baby seemed to be the most thrilled to be home, just buzzing around, getting into his favorite things - very cute. And Kristopher started asking when we'd go to a water park again. As for me, I'm still doing laundry and unpacking! (And catching up on sleep!)
-
We're busy doing laundry and packing, as we're leaving Friday morning. Every morning Kristopher has asked me, "Are we on vacation yet? Is it Friday?" I feel for the guy - as a kid, it seems like f-o-r-e-v-e-r for stuff like that to happen. For Hubby and I, it seems like it's coming up too soon - there's too much to do! We have three sure things - Santa's Village, Clark's Trading Post and water slide, and the tour up Mt. Washington. The last thing is more for us grown-ups. We're doing the bus tour thing, with a tour of the observatory. I've climbed Mt. Washington a couple of times - it's not an easy trip, but it's worth it - it's one of those things you will never forget. It's really quite safe - just stay on the paths. We were just checking the weather, so that we could pick the day with the best visibility - right now it's got a windchill of 36 degrees - in August! So, we'll let you know how it goes - it won't be soon enough or long enough!

I'm still trying to play catch up on this thread... Not to derail things, but have you ever had so much work and so many jobs lined up that you didn't know where to begin? That's how my month has been. I've been working at the hospital about 8-10 hours a day, plus I've had a couple of clients call me wanting rush jobs on brochures and whatnot, then I've had school board meetings the past three nights in a row that have gone until 10pm or better - scheech! (I do videography and meeting minutes for the school boards)... I've been working third shift on the weekends, doing the help desk thing (picture Dilbert in a non-profit setting... that's me!) All this, and we're trying to get ready to go on vacation - there's laundry a mile high, and so much to be done. I need a wife. That's all there is to it.... but I'll settle for a drink... just one... I have to work tomorrow! But this is about guitars, isn't it? Shame on me - mine hasn't seen daylight in over a week. Okay - we were talking about flying-v's huh? Socks - earlier you asked if Leslie West was playing when I saw Mountain. Yes, he was. Afterall, Leslie West IS Mountain. And yes, he did break out a flying-v. I thought the name came from the trem - it's a fugly axe, in my opinion. They were a dime a dozen in the 80's - wasn't that the official hair metal guitar? Check out this pup on eBay - holy cow! There's some other fugly guitars out there, too... Like THIS... or THIS ONE and what were they smokin' when they built THIS THING???

So.... that's what you're doing with your ear! I can attest that this DOES NOT work with rubbing alcohol. TN requires emission testing. My '89 Ford Festiva WOW Car Special, with over 180K miles on it, did not pass. What a suprise! Someone told me to go put a bunch of rubbing alcohol in the tank, take it on the highway, and get it good-n-hot. Then, bring it back to the emission testing station. The second test was waaayyyy worse than the first. Rubbing alcohol is full of water - I'd just dumped a ton of water in the tank! It has to be an additive - not good ol' rubbing alcohol - to make the gas "dry". We registered the POS car in another county, under another believer's address. Go figure.

Socks - that Longgg tune needs some 12-bar blues bass guitar rollin' around over it... nice vibe. I like the reverb you got goin' on there - good tone, too! I got some catchin' up to do on this thread - I've been workin' waaaayyyyy too much. BTW - Beck is supposed to start out at the Hampton Beach Casino here in NH on 09/13 - we're going to try to score some tix. Hubby's seen him before - I'm sure it will be a good show. There's some great acts there this summer - holy cow! Queensryche, Black Label Society, Tesla, and John Haitt - I love John Haitt! Anywho... it's beddy-bye time... I'll catch this later...

Sorry I'm just now getting back to this thread... I've been working for the past 21 days straight without a day off - today is my first break - phew! Well, you'll never guess where I was last night... HIPPIEFEST! Have you heard of it? It was quite a line up: BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS LOVIN' SPOONFUL - RARE EARTH MOUNTAIN WITH LESLIE WEST BADFINGER W/ JOEY MOLLAND COUNTRY JOE McDONALD Plus... Terry Sylvester Formerly of the Hollies Felix Cavalier and the Rascals Melanie and emcee Wavy Gravy! They played at Meadowbrook in Gilford, NH last night. We were in the 15th row - good seats. Pretty good show... To top it off, Wavy Gravy was the MC for the event. I got to meet him - holy cow - that dude is seriously baked, but very sweet. It was sorta like an encounter with a friendly Alzheimer's patient... you sorta expect him to start playing with his toes, as he's telling jokes. But he's totally lovable. The highlight, for me, was Rare Earth. They have the most incredible bassist - Randy "Bird" Burghdoff. I knew very little about the band - just their hits. Well, this dude plays lead bass - just incredible. He was all over the neck of that thing and has technique that's from another stratosphere! I was in awe... to say the least! WOW! To me, they're more Motown than hippie music - but I'm a huge Motown fan - which is part of why taking up bass guitar was so appealing to me. Anyhow, this was a very inspiring performace for me - I wish I could get it on tape... Of course they did "Get Ready", "Big Brother", and "I Just Want To Celebrate" - all good stuff. They were very tight - just excellent to watch and listen to... The other highlight of the night was someone I'd never heard of - Melanie. Please forgive me - some of this music happened before I was born, and I was raised in a country music (read: Tennessee Ernie Ford country music) household. So some of this is new to me... Anyhow, Melanie was really ... er.... different. I hadn't heard her music before - she did "Brand New key," "What Have They Done To My Soul," and "Lay Down(Candles In The Rain) and a little bit of "Animal Crackers" (I think that was the name of the song....) but she also had her son and daughter with her - they were her band and backup vocals. Her son had incredible chops - he played a nylon string guitar - it wasn't a dread - it sounded like a classical or flamenco guitar. I had to do some creative Google-ing when I got home to learn more about them. The other groups were pretty good - BadFinger was tight and played some favs, Mountain was just LOUD - more hard than I cared for in that sort of setting, but the lead singer/guitarist certainly had chops and I respect that! Blood, Sweat, and Tears had a great line up - their horn section was good, but I found them to be more jazz than folk or rock... All in all it was a good time! The one thing that really got me going... "hmmmmm".... was when Country Joe did his famous " " routine and then went into "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag"... and did it with a twist... he replaced the word "Vietnam" with "Iraq"... it was fitting... and chilling... And it's one, two, three, What are we fighting for ? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn, Next stop is ...Iraq... And it's five, six, seven, Open up the pearly gates, Well there ain't no time to wonder why, Whoopee! we're all gonna die. Sorta makes you think? Doesn't it? And isn't that what the music from that era was about?

Okay, here's what we ended up with... We're going to the White Mountains of NH. We've rented a 2 bedroom cabin for 3 nights, that's just near Mt. Washington, etc. We're going to Santa's Village, the Flume, and all that stuff. My favorite outing we have planned is a guided tour up Mt. Washington and a tour of the observatory that's up there. (The world record for the highest gusts of wind were measured on Mt. W. - it was 231 mph! It's a place known for extremes in tempretures, too - from -47F degrees below to 72F degrees warm - very interesting place!) The really cool thing about this, as far as I'm concerned is HOW we made the decision. I printed off a bunch of y'alls' ideas and brought them down to Hubby to take a look-see. Kristopher was in the room and got interested in the print outs and the conversation. He got really excited about the attractions at the White Mts, and said, "Why can't we go here? I want to go here! Please?!" - Well... Okay! Decision made! Since he helped with that, I've had him help with planning the trip, from mapping out the drive to the packing. This will be his first vacation - and he's really into it - and so am I - I think it will be a great time of fun and learning for us!

Chas & family haven't had a vacation in 6 years. It's about time, wouldn't you say? I'm super excited about this, as it's long overdue As many of you know, we live in NH. Here's the skinny: (a) We want to go on a short vacation - 5 days, tops (b) Go somewhere that is not too far of a drive (I'd say 5 hours tops...) ('Are we THERE yet?!') (b.1.) and isn't any further south than we are now. (We aren't big fans of warm weather!) © has lots to do with young kids (ages 5 y/o and 18 m/o) (d) camping isn't an option - Hubby is a city slicker. I could live in a tent and fish all day, but I'll have to do my camping by myself, or with just the boys. He's not game for that. So, we've been looking at areas like Saint John, NB - we had honeymooned there, 6 years ago. We've also talked about Montreal - but know little about it. I can't find any good web sites about it that has lots of information, but it's still on the radar for us. We've also talked about the coast of Maine - the Bar Harbor or even Kennebunkport area. Canadian exchange rates are only 13% right now, so Canada isnt' as big of a draw to us this time, and due to the cost of gas we don't want to spend big $$$ in gas just to save 13% on a hotel room - it probably would be a wash at the end... Any recommendations on locations or areas we might not have thought about? Also, have you used any of the internet travel sites, like Velocity? Do you recommend any in particular? Thanks!

Congrats to you & your family! You must be so proud!!!
