  1. BTW - I showed it Hubby - he didn't think it was that funny... I was like, "Are you sure you're a guy?" I keep forgetting to share it with Kristopher - I bet this would make a 5 year old's day! On second thought... I'm scared he'd blab about it in school.... oh, what a thing to ponder...
  2. holy crap Linda Z... How much coffee have you been drinking?!
  3. Sudo - try a cube or two of boullion in your broth in place of the butter or with much less butter - I found veggie boullion was very good and less fattening. Since I'm married to a Greek man, we buy a case of this each year; We give away about half of it and use the other half. It's a great all-purpose seasoning, much like Spike, which someone mentioned earlier. It's especially good as a grilling spice - and very good on lamb chops.
  4. The pea soup thread made me think of this - coolchef talks about how pea soup is especially good this time of year in New England. As a native Mainah, who's defected to tax-free New Hampshire, I do agree. But there's other good food in our area that you won't see in the south or out west very much - I've lived all over and would get most homesick for home cooking! American Chop Suey (ground beef, elbow mac, tomato sauce, onion, etc., all mixed up) Baked beans (the real way - in a 250 degree oven for 8 hours with a whole onion in the bottom and salt pork on the top) Oyster stew (just oysters, butter and cream. You have to bring your own Lipitol!) Haddock (white flaky fish - makes excellent chowda or fish-n-chips - can't find it in the south) Marshmellow Fluff (not the marshmellow you put on a stick - it's the kind you spread on bread to make a fluffernutter sandwich) I'm sure there's more. I know there's other Yankees who post here so I'll let them tell more. What about in the South? Mid-west? Pacific region? Do tell! It's all good!
  5. Psalmie -- I totally do this - I seldom crack a cookbook, even though I have a decent collection. My favorite thing is to take a quick inventory of the kitchen and invent a meal. It's almost always good - and I do write down some of our favorites just so I don't have to wait for lightening to strike twice.
  6. Belle -- We have a saying in our house that's started since Andreas came on the scene and started discovering what's good... It goes like this: ____________ --- still GOOD! We'll fill in the blank with things like: Bosco and milk --- still good! 'Aple syrup -- still good. ('Aple is how Kristopher says "maple") Bananas on a fork --- still good. Your post reminded me of that...
  7. I lay upon a grassy bank My hands were all a quiver I slowly undid her suspender belt And her leg fell in the river. - a poem by Sir Paul McCartney
  8. I always put in a ham bone I've saved in the freezer for the soup. I like potato in mine, too. I think good pea soup can be beat - even my super pickey 5 year old will eat it - and that kid won't touch a green M&M for fear it's a veggie! About an hour before it's time to serve it, I cut any meat that's left off the bone. I also add a tiny bit of sugar to the soup - especially if it caught on the bottom (scorched) a little - it's a soup that will do that quite easily if you're not paying attention. The other thing... I make a big, fat corn bread and serve it hot. Yes, I make mine with sugar - in the south, I know that corn bread isn't made with sugar - I didn't care for it. I like mine a little sweet. Makes up for not putting sugar in my tea! LOL!

  11. There was an article in Yankee Magazine some years ago about a study that was done on what exactly happens when there is a collision with a large animal, such as a moose. The researchers reviewed hundreds of accident reports from several states. I remember their findings were that the legs of the animal worked like rubberbands, twisting around the vehicle, and entering the passenger compartments through the windows and the like. Yeah, pretty gorey. They talked about some of the safety measure that are being taken to prevent the collisions. Road signage noting moose crossing areas, more guardrails, fences, etc., were all talked about. But the interesting thing, to me, was that there's a car company who has designed cars to withstand a collision with moose - and many more - but it was the only one who had focused on that outcome. I believe it was Saab - I can't find the article now. When I know moose and deer are more active, like this time of year, I always drive much more cautiously than normal. I live in a very rural area, so I'm careful when I'm out at night or in an area where deer or moose might be found in more abundance.
  12. You got that thing on safety?

Socks -- His looks like this: Minus the scribbles... I found it on eBay and ended up getting it for something like $230 - no kidding. They usualy go for around $400. I'm the queen of good timing. (Usually...ha!) It's got great tone - it's an arch top - and the color almost matches an amp he has -- a tolex seafoam green Fender Custom Shop Prosonic combo amp. The Prosonic is a tube amp and has a great warm retro sound to it - the Wildkat sounds killer thru it - he can make it prrrrrr! I'll take a "family pic" sometime....
  14. What stunning ladies you both are! I love it that I now have a picture to put with a handle!
