  1. At least that person is WORKING! They are paying taxes, just like you and I, and I'd rather see that then them living off the fat of my paycheck (which isn't so fat after the government gets ahold of it!) If your co-worker is such a piece of work, then that's really due to ineffective management of your company and/or department. (Sorry, I don't know what you do for a living.) Stigmas with mental health treatment and diagnosis? You bet there is stigmas with it and you can't really tell people to suck it up - that's just heartless. Those issues still exist but nothing like they did 10, 15, 20 years ago. Health information is now more protected than it used to be thanks to HIPAA laws, but nonetheless ignorant people will still make judgments about those who need medication or therapy or hospitalization. I remember LCM saying that therapy was basically paying someone to be your friend - what a crock. I wonder how he felt about what when he was having thoughts of suicide? But I digress... There is tax breaks for companies who hire the mentally disabled - big difference, here - but that's another thread, I would think.
  2. Sorry I'm just now getting back to you... I wasn't a JW, perse, but my nanny was. My parents permitted her to bring me to the Kingdom Hall, out witnessing, etc. - I don't think they really understood what was going on and they worked a lot. I was also her ears in someways, as she was deaf, and she taught me sign language (just simple stuff really - I probably couldn't converse with it for long.) Interestingly enough, I was raised Mormon. Then, I joined The Way. Boy, now that I look at it, I'm just a cult 'ho, aren't I?
  3. I don't exactly disagree with you here, because untreated mental illness can be at the choice of the patient - the patient going against medical advice. Personality disorders would be lumped in with this. Whether it's medication, therapy, or other treatment, if someone is offered treatment and refuses it, you can't do anything about it. That's their right as a patient. But you can without hold aid to them if they refuse to do what it takes to be at a higher level of functioning. I think what is not measured in the doling out of aid is the functioning level of people. The real Gods of the health professionals aren't those in the mental health or behavioral health services, but the insurance companies.
  4. No - Handycam comes with some software but it's nothing to crow about... of course, you can UPGRADE it for $$$$$$$$ - that's big money. If you have to have a PC with a Firewire port to use it. I tried it out on mine and it was very cumbersome to use. I wasn't about to shell out money for it beyond what was supplied with the Handycam. (I do videography for the school boards in my town and some other town meetings, etc.)

    Groceries

I budget $30-40 per person per week in the family, this is for a family of four. I use some coupons and savings cards, etc. but not a lot because I buy a lot of store name brand stuff. We get paper products, diapers, cat litter, and laundry detergent at BJ's Wholesale Club. I buy our meat in bulk and separate it and freeze it by the portions I'd use for a regular meal. In the summer, I get a lot of our produce from local farmers or the Farmers' Market. We eat pretty healthy - I don't buy a lot of processed food. We eat wholegrain in everything possible and low sugar or no sugar. The biggest expense for us is milk (soy milk) which isn't cheap. The boys love their soy milk - especially the flavored milk. My only real splurge is good coffee. We don't eat out much - maybe once or twice a month and one of those times would be pizza or Chinese, and that's about it.
  6. Here's my take: "I'll wait to see if WordWolf has any info" = you don't know what you're talking about - I'll wait for someone who does. I know Sudo doesn't have a Mac, but I am telling you what works.... I don't have a PC answer for that - wish I did. I got a PC with all the bells and whistles - but its in the shop all the time~! So, that's no good, eh? I believe Sony makes some software that might work - I know they do a bit for editing, but I've heard some bad things about it. I've heard lots of good stuff about FinalCut - wish I had a copy... Sorry, but I perceived Sudo's post as being a little miffed that GreasyTech and I didn't quite answer his question - maybe we all need to go out for a beer or something...
  7. The plot thickens again... No computer for another 2 week - some griping on the phone got me a loaner. Had the new motherboard replaced, a new hard drive, and another new power supply put in the thing. Now I gotta get the backup discs from HP to partition the thing off and install XP - that adds another week to this. I'm glad this was under warranty but gotta wonder if all these new parts were really necessary - I mean, really! They've had my machine for nearly a month - it will be over a month by the time I get it back. UNBELIEVABLE! I will never deal the Geek Squad again. This sucks!
  8. You just answered your own question... with your own question. They aren't of a sound mind and body - that's why. Generally undiagnosed or untreated mental illness is involved with many of these cases.
  9. I can see it now... "Hey Honey, was that turbulence or did you.... ?" But can you have a cigarette afterwards?

Yeah, I heard about this too... Motown is near and dear to my heart... RIP Joe Hunter... :(
  11. Chronic abusers of drugs are generally labeled so by the local hospitals and other healthcare professionals in the area. In my area we have a network within the hospitals' emergency rooms and walk-in care centers to compare names and medications that are being asked for. If a patient is ER-hopping looking for pain medication they are confronted about it and they are referred to a pain program and they are not given narcotic pain medications to manage their pain. These patients are also referred to a social worker for assistance and they are connected to programs that are designed to help them. If the patients truly have a pain problem, they will comply (and grumble but comply, nonetheless) because they need to continue their medical care. Unfortunately, we can not make choices for people. Of course, I'm not telling you something you don't already know here... but if we could make choices for people, then someone could have stopped me from having my fifth cup of coffee today and eating a sugary snack because both are bad for me. But I did it anyhow. On a more serious note, we can't stop people from shooting up H either. Thankfully, we have laws that put people who make really bad choices in jail. We don't have a lot of consequences for people who are out to milk the system, other than the label them such and shut down some of their assistance , a bit at a time, so they will hopefully stand on their own feet. I can tell you that, at least in my area, the people who serve in the system (i.e. the social workers, care managers, etc.) are pretty well networked to identify those who are chronic needy people and those who just need a little extra help because they're down on their luck at the moment. I have no issues with the latter of the two - thank god that there - maybe I'll need it someday, who knows...
  12. Maybe instead of "complaining", I should have used the word "apathetic"... Either way... This woman's needs aren't getting met and additional action is needed. Yes, I'm just an armchair quarterback in this game, but I do know how its played. Lots of phones calls - lots of connections - some help is achieved. I wish you the best in helping your friend.
  13. Remember... This is the same group that thought Beta was the next big thing...
  14. I was just very specific. Do you need me to also make the phone calls?
  15. Poppycock. Guardianship can be appointed by a hospital's administration at any time, and at no cost to the patient or member of the community. Guardianship does not mean legal council always. It can mean anyone, such as the hospital's president or board of trustees, who would make decisions for the patient if a relative or partner was not available to do so. Shelters are not obligated to provide to the specific diet needs HOWEVER a food bank most certainly could do this. Many churches have access to food banks. The Care Management department of any hospital would also have community connections to food banks. If a patient was discharged to a shelter it would be because (a) she no longer needed skilled medical care and did not qualify for a skilled bed facility (i.e. a nursing home or other similar assisted living facility and (b) she had no friends, no family, and no other place to go where she would be safe. A patient with a life-threatening illness would not be discharged to a shelter. Shelters are available to provide safe housing for people with no alternatives. They have staff to work with the people to help them secure a place to live, even its another shelter that is more suitable to their needs and specialized in teaching people life-skills. If you feel you were discharged against your will or discharged to an unsafe shelter, then you should most certainly contact the care management department of the hospital you were discharged from to discuss this with them. If your illness is life-threatening and you are not getting your medical needs met - WHICH INCLUDES diet needs - then you should (a) contact the care management of the hospital from which you were discharged to report this and if a reasonable alternative is not offered then you should (b) contact your physician's office and if you don't get resolve there © you should go to your local emergency room to report your conditions and seek treatment. I am sympathetic to the fact that there's few options and a lot of waiting for results. However, unless you are ready to be the squeaky wheel, then you can expect to get no where fast and to stay in the rut you are in. You have to bug, pester, and be a pain in the @$$ sometimes to get into these programs. These programs, such as your hospital, emergency room, care management department, local case workers, town welfare departments, shelters, food banks, etc. all get their funding based on the services they provide. Whether they are paid from local tax payers' money or from Federal dollars, they are all obligated to help you. Every state also has an Omsbudsmen program - if you contact the Department of Health and Human Services in your state, they can give you the phone number. If you mean business, go squeak - get your needs met. Otherwise... why complain about it if you don't want help? I don't get that..
  16. We ended up having subs and fries. I had to work a lot this weekend, so munchies were actually supper for us. I grilled a cheese & garlic sausage that I got at a local meat market where they make their own. I heated up some leftover spaghetti sauce and added mushrooms to it. Then I layered sausage, sauce, and pizza blend shredded cheese on a sub roll and put it under the broiler to get it all bubbly and toasty. Served with baked fries - YUM. Oh, and beer. Sam Adams, of course.

    quirks

Whoever said they don't like to leave a room without taking something with them to the next room that needs to be put away or whatever - THAT'S ME! I stack stuff near the top or bottom of the steps, so that next time I go up or down the stairs, it goes with me. I realized another quirk of mine today at work... and I can't believe I saw this at work (I work at a hospital)... But I get super grossed out when someone serving food, like in a cafeteria or restaurant, has chipped nail polish. I can't stand to see nail polish on anyone in food service to begin with, but CHIPPED... WHERE DID THE CHIPS GO? Ewwwwwww!

    Super Bowl Ads

I loved the Bud ad with the crabs worshiping the red cooler - LOL! Also, the Diamond nuts ad where Robert Boulet comes in and messes with your desk at 3pm... it was so weird it was funny!

Did y'all watch Prince during the Super Bowl Half-Time Show tonight? Chops of doom! I can't get over that performance ~ holy cow ~ he was playing in the pouring rain and was absolutely awesome... Did ya see it? And... On a side note - The Police are going to have a reunion at the Grammy Awards this next week - OH PLEASE LET THERE BE A TOUR!
  20. Podcasting WOULD make sense - you can start up a podcast for around $50 and there's places you can upload your podcast to for free or chumpchange. It would be a quick, easy, and low-cost solution for digital recording. But NNNNNOOOOOOOO-ooooooo oooooo.... They take the big $$$ way to digitally enhance their recordings, for what? 1,500+ adult believers? (I'm not counting the kids, k?) What about the year they bought all those super big screen TVs that were used at the ROA and other classes... Then they canceled the ROA... What did they do with the TVs? I remember seeing them used in some of the staff lounge areas - yup, we'd watch the weather channel on 'em... in style... Your ABS $$$... BTW - R0ger K?ntz was not a recording tech prior to his going on staff... if I remember right, I believe he had a window washing business before going on staff...
  21. I was in from 1988-2000. I was basically "Jane Believer" - mostly an assistant TC, never Corps but a company woman, for the most part. Overwhelming service looked something like this, in an average week: Sunday - Phone hook-up (mandatory) at 2:30 PM - but remember, you have to do set up, so be there at 11am. Expect it to wrap up, including clean up, around 5pm. Monday - Fellowship 7pm - set up has to be done by 6pm, so you start cleaning and preparing at 5pm. Tuesday - Witnessing at the mall from 7-9pm. Wednesday - Fellowship 7pm - set up has to be done by 6pm, so you start cleaning and preparing at 5pm. Thursday - Corps Night (but since I'm not WC, I'm babysitting from 6pm until 11pm) Friday - Fellowship 7pm - set up has to be done by 6pm, so you start cleaning and preparing at 5pm. Saturday - Limb work day, Day in the Word, or a weekend mind-bending class. Now, pepper this schedule with lots of call from people in the twig and leadership. Expect lots of little favors for this, that and the other... And repeat this week 52 times a year... basically...
  22. I knew Bluezman was gonna come to the rescue! WHOO-HOO!
  23. Nice of you to assume what you think I know nothing about - I don't have a car jack (I do) but since you think I don't... then... how can I loan it to you? If you want to edit you need something like FinalCut Pro - which is Mac based. You're welcome.
