Is it inappropriate to want to know how someone died?
ChasUFarley replied to johniam's topic in Open
I admire her for this. She didn't want sympathy, or to have special treatment. She wanted to live her life and let those around her do the same. She wasn't selfish or needy. It sounds to me like she wanted her dignity up to her last day - perfect! I bet she was a very strong woman and is sorely missed by her family. -

ChasUFarley replied to johniam's topic in Open
I don't believe that's it's inappropriate to WANT to know how someone died, but the real issue is, how does one appropriately approach the subject without bringing more hurt to the family or seeming down right rude? "Uh, excuse me, please, could you tell me how George kicked the bucket becuase it wasn't in his obit?" I've learned to give the apology first, a way out of the answer to the person you're asking the question to, and finally, the question. "I'm so sorry for your loss - George's passing away happened so quickly. If it's too painful for you to talk about I will certainly understand, but may I ask what happened?" If you think that your asking will cause more pain, then it's NEVER worth asking the cause of death. I don't think the laws for knowing about a cause of death should be any different for public figures than it is for the general public. You'll automatically create a caste system if you start with that thinking! -
What are some of your favorite websites? Uh... lemme clarify this... What are some of your favorite websites that you would share with your mother or boss? Where else other than GSC do you surf? (how's that?) Here's a few of my favorites: www.cars.com www.drudgereport.com www.weather.com (bland, but useful) http://www.ptcruiserlinks.com/forum/ www.llbean.com (shopping - whatelse?) My son's favorite site (and he navigates it all by himself - a geek in training!): www.fisherprice.com

If you've seen this before - or better yet, - if it's framed and hanging on your office wall.... you might be a geek! ================================================= If Dr. Seuss wrote for Star Trek: The Next Generation... Author: Dave Fuller Picard: Sigma Indri, that's the star, So, Data, please, how far? How far? Data: Our ship can get there very fast But still the trip will last and last We'll have two days til we arrive But can the Indrans there survive? Picard: LaForge, please give us factor nine. LaForge: But, sir, the engines are offline! Picard: Offline! But why? I want to go! Please make it so, please make it so! Riker: But sir, if Geordi says we can't, We can't, we mustn't, and we shan't, The danger here is far too great! Picard: But surely we must not be late! Troi: I'm sensing anger and great ire. Computer: Alert! Alert! The ship's on fire! Picard: The ship's on fire? How could this be? Who lit the fire? Riker: Not me. Worf: Not me. Picard: Computer, how long til we die? Computer: Eight minutes left to say goodbye. Data: May I suggest a course to take? We could, I think, quite safely make Extinguishers from tractor beams And stop the fire, or so it seems... Geordi: Hurray! Hurray! You've saved the day! Again I say, Hurray! Hurray! Picard: Mr. Data, thank you much. You've saved our lives, our ship, and such. Troi: We still must save the Indran planet -- Data: Which (by the way) is made of granite... Picard: Enough, you android. Please desist. We understand -- we get your gist. But can we get our ship to go? Please, make it so, PLEASE make it so. Geordi: There's sabotage among the wires And that's what started all the fires. Riker: We have a saboteur? Oh, no! We need to go! We need to go! Troi: We must seek out the traitor spy And lock him up and ask him why? Worf: Ask him why? How sentimental. I say give him problems dental. Troi: Are any Romulan ships around? Have scanners said that they've been found? Or is it Borg or some new threat We haven't even heard of yet? I sense no malice in this crew. Now what are we supposed to do? Crusher: Captain, please, the Indrans need us. They cry out, "Help us, clothe us, feed us!" I can't just sit and let them die! A doctor MUST attempt -- MUST try! Picard: Doctor, please, we'll get there soon. Crusher: They may be dead by Tuesday noon. *COMMERCIAL BREAK, COMMERCIAL BREAK HOW LONG WILL THESE DUMB ADS TAKE?* Worf: The saboteur is in the brig. He's very strong and very big. I had my phaser set on stun -- A zzzip! A zzzap! Another one! He would not budge, he would not fall, He would not stun, no, not at all! He changed into a stranger form All soft and purple, round and warm. Picard: Did you see this, Mr. Worf? Did you see this creature morph? Worf: I did and then I beat him fairly. Hit him on the jaw -- quite squarely. Riker: My commendations, Klingon friend! Our troubles now are at an end! Crusher: Now let's get our ship to fly And orbit yonder Indran sky! Picard: LaForge, please tell me we can go...? Geordi: Yes, sir, we can. Picard: Then make it so! Copyright © 1995 Dave Fuller.

Galen - I dunno if you go to the chat room or not, but there's a poster there with the handle of Biker Babe - she used to be "Mrs. Rat" back on Waydale - she and her hubby go to some of these things, but I don't think they do the Laconia one... If you do come up this way (or any other 'Spotters), please email me - I'd love to meet 'cha and we live close to L'conia. Ciao! -
WordWolf -- There's some great links there - thanks for posting them!

Not only are you a Maine-ah, but you have a love for civil disobidience... Yet another reason I like you! -
Steve was a WOW in Sanford, ME in 88-89 but didn't finish the year. He was also dropped from WC -- it was all around the time that LCM sent out the "who do you stand with" letter. Anyhow, I've been wondering what became of Steve... Anyone have any news? Thanks!
-
About every year or so I put out feelers to see if anyone lurking or posting is in touch with Joe... He was from Memphsis, TN. Went WOW 88-89 to Sanford, ME. Went WOW again 89-90 (second wave) to Montana (I forget the city) - but didn't finish his WOW year.... Last I heard he wasn't going to fellowship much and was driving truck... Anyhow have any news on him? Thanks!

Onion -- I work for the local hospital there and we almost double our staffing for the weekends of MC Week. My brothers, who were all born and raised in Laconia, tell of one year where the Hell's Angels took the Laconia and NH State Police and locked them all up in the Laconia jail! The governor had to send in the National Guard to get them out! Since then, there's been waaaayyyyyy more security at those things but there's always something happening that week that makes the national news.... -

Y'all ever come to Motorcycle Week in Laconia, NH? http://www.laconiamcweek.com/ Hubby's band is going to be playing there sometime during the week - he's wondering if he needs a flackjacket and helmet for the occasion! -
c'mon p-mosh... i saw your thread on southpark... you gotta be top or second-top geek just for that!

Uh.... does this sound like the actions of a *bad parent*? Life with kids - no matter the age - will never look as blissful as it does on TV (Waltons, The Ingalls, etc.) or sound as good as it does in some of the parenting magazines. I always have the "where did I go wrong?" feeling when my 3 year old argues, disobeys or just flat out has a temper tantrum - then I find that all my girlfriends with kids that age are going through the same thing. Jonny - I don't know you personally - just from your posts - but it sounds to me like you have a heart the size of Texas and a lot of forgiveness and grace in that heart for your son. Several of the posters here have given you some great insight on your situation. I wish I could do the same but haven't the expereince to draw on, yet - but will keep this thread close to my heart... Way Corps paid as full-time staff - What was gained?
ChasUFarley replied to ChasUFarley's topic in About The Way
WordWolf -- No kidding... I remember that when I applied for the WC, it was in the low-20's number (they don't even number them anymore!). My LC, who was 7th WC got all misty-eyed about it because they couldn't believe that the WC number (year number) was that high. Funny thing, the higher the WC number, the LOWER the number of WC graduating! Belle - You're probably right about the numbers spin. They could make seven apples of horse turds on the side of the road sound like fertilizer spiritual perfection! -

At first, I thought it might be Trefor who was the biggest geek here, but then Raf trumped him with a list of books about Star Trek he'd read... Being a geek goes beyond books - it's got to be in every pore of your skin - every facet of life has to reek with geekness... So, let's duke it out in cyberspace... WHO'S THE BIGGEST GEEK? I'll start, but know I'm going to loose this one... BOOKS - Read the Simarillion (aka the Elven telephone directory) & LOTR series more than once. MOVIES - Seen all the LOTR, Star Wars, Star Trek, and even the Harry Potter movies. Especially likes the behind-the-scenes clips on the DVDs. 'PUTERS - Knows how to read & write in binary and hexidecimal. (Haven't sat for my A+ cert yet, but hopes to, soon.) Gets excited about wireless networks. MUSIC - Listens to some techno pop and still owns vinyl albums. Knows who OMD is. Loves the Bee Gees. PETS - Owns cats. (Or is it the other way around?) WORK - I like my job because I get to work with statistics, design presentations, and read gross medical reports. MODE OF TRANSPORTATION -A customized (work in progress) PT Cruiser, Limited Edition, silver. Refuses to own a mini-van! TRAVEL - Haven't done much for recreational purposes. Spent a couple of days at the Smithsonian once on vacation as a teen - would love to go back! (For a month!) S/O - Married to a math teacher AND loves to hear him talk about work.

A little background: I never met him. He was dead before I took the class in 1989. I only heard him on a few SNS tapes and on the PFAL class series (FND, INT, & ADV) before they were pulled in the mid-90's. I knew little/nothing about his personal life until I discovered the internet in 1999, and had no idea he'd died of cancer. On the internet I learned a lot about him and much of it was uglier than I could have expected. He did many things that made me ashamed to admit I had been a part of his group or took part in his teachings. I believe that most of what I've read is true because of the consistancy of the stories I've found and the posters, such as Ralph D., who have confirmed much of it. However, I can't get past what I learned from the PFAL series and the other teachings that came from VPW. The Word that he taught brought a lot of healing to my life. I still believe that the Bible is the Word of God - there's a thread about this now and it seems I'm not the only poster here that believes this, still. Being thankful for what I learned, I have trouble really "poking fun" at his life - and wonder if he would have changed at all, or possibly even tried to, before he died. No, I don't think that what he did - womanizing, abusing power, etc., - was justifiable just because he taught some "hot Bible"... but I also can't help but feel some respect is due to him... Do y'all see what I mean about the mixed feelings? Was he really a monster? Or just a man with a message and some problems?

Way Corps paid as full-time staff - What was gained?
ChasUFarley replied to ChasUFarley's topic in About The Way
I don't think that there was any VPW elect WC or LCM elect WC. I do think there was those who believed LCM was NOT the right man for the job and those who would kiss @$$ just to keep their spots as leadership. LCM weeded out the ones who had a backbone when he sent out the "Who do you stand with?" letter in 1989. Those who said they didn't stand with him got the boot, if they didn't leave on their own. LCM continued to test the waters of faithfulness to him (not God - albeit, he thought he was next in line) and raise the standards (or the b.s. level). As things got deeper people either drown or jumped out. There's darn few left now. I think the last graduating WC had something like 9 people in it - someone else here can better confirm those numbers. The current WC overseer is the next best thing to LCM being at the helm, so they're probably just churning out more of the same little MOG-on-a-sticks that they were in the 90's. Just a thought - but if the Household is so damn strong now, how come there isn't more people rising up to go into the WC? (Fodder for another thread, I suppose.) The cost of training is over $4K/year, I believe. I had applied for 23rd, and think that's what the price tag was then... Again, maybe someone else here has a more current number... In the late 90's there was a "catch" to people being sponsored - it had to be by people you knew - like in your area, etc. There was no more of the spiritual partner pan handeling going on at events. This had to suck for people who came from areas where the believers there had limited incomes - it was another rule to keep you in your place, you know? Signals - hope I didn't sound like a snot in my post to you... I was keying off what you had started your post with - no offence was intended... Can I buy you a coffee and a slice of key lime pie? Welcome to the Cafe! -

ChasUFarley replied to ChasUFarley's topic in About The Way
signals - where were you? There were darn few of the WC from the 70's left and not a whole lot from the 80's left. The WC that was left for the 90's wasn't the kind you talked about in your post. Yeah, there were some who had a silver spoon in their mouths, but most HAD to work - although there was less and less blue collar workers left as WC. See, the WC was thinned down quite a bit in the 90's. Debt, marital/family issues, etc., were some of the reasons WC was placed in the Way Corps Alumni (what the hell did that mean, anyhow?). Some were called Alumni because they were told that they didn't have a ministry - I thought that clergy had ministries... but anyhow, that's another thread. The WC that was sent F/T had to quit jobs, close businesses, etc. - I think a few, like one guy who was in the military, was allowed to keep their jobs. Some choose their professions over going full time and dropped themselves from the WC. Like Belle basically said, the WC had a lot of time to micromanage the underlings. I wondered if it was a ploy to make us as miserable as possible sometimes... I remember getting called out on the carpet for the s-t-u-p-i-d-e-s-t things you can imagine - things that made me finally say to my RC, "So, if this is the worst problem you have in the area, then things must be pretty quiet," (I'd gotten in trouble for not making my bed when my lower back was out - it was the end of the frekkin' world!)
