Thanks EyesOpen for a great story, too bad it's not fiction, but I really appreciate your telling it! I hope those guys that were injured got lots of money from a settlement, but it sure doesn't replace lost body parts. I always was glad that I was sent LEAD in warm weather, how awful was that to not take better care of people. What incredible courage K. had, reminds me of the guy who got his arm caught in a rock while hiking alone and amputated his own arm to save his life. (Of course his story differs from this one because he was acting alone and should have known better than to hike alone. You guys were entrusting your lives to people who should have know better how to take care of people in that environment.) Great story telling. Can't wait for the next episode.

Let's see, I was 16 and in 11th grade when I got in TWI in 1974. I gave up a full academic scholarship to college to go WOW when I graduated from high school. After going WOW I came back and went to college for 2 years before dropping out of college to go into the Corps. Got married in the WC weddings and then went back to school while hubby worked PT for TWI. Got a BA and MA then after leaving TWI (in 1987) got a Ph.D. (94) So glad that I didn't give up on that part of my life.

I saw it a while ago. It was really creepy. I remember being in rez. when that all happened. I really don't think TWI with all its problems was ever on that level of evil, all those hundreds of people dead. I was especially moved to pray for Jim Jones' son. He seems to be a sensible guy with a huge load of guilt to deal with and a great need for a loving Saviour to heal and comfort him. I'd love to hear that he got saved.

NotinKansas, I looked back at your original questions to start the thread off. I don't know about Don and Bill's list so I probably wasn't on it, but I do remember Gene Slavit's list. He had a list of all the 9th Corps women and he was inviting each one on a "date" to a meal with him. I think I ate lunch with him one day, so he could check me off the list. Anyone else remember eating lunch with Gene?

Wasn't there a Ted Ferrell song about who has rolled away the stone? I can't remember much about it. I also remember some great "blue book" songs about the resurrection: He arose! He Arose! Hallelujah Christ Arose! He arose a victor from the dark domain and He lives forever with His saints to reign. (I can't remember any more of the words, but here's another one:) He Lives I serve a risen saviour, He's in the world today I know that He is risen whatever men may say I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer, and just the time I need Him, He's always near. He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today. Sometimes Chuck and I have a contest to see who can remember the most twig songs. Drives our kids nuts. Actually some of them are great hymns. My fav is "In the Garden" I come to the garden alone while the dew is still on the roses, and the voice I hear falling on my ear, the son of God discloses, and He walks with me and He talks with me, and He tells my I am His own, and the joy we share, while we tarry there, none other has ever known. That song still ministers the presence of God to me, even though I couldn't stand to think of all those old "way" songs for years. Any one else have some favorites?

Let's see, it was my 9th Corps interim year, must have been 79/80. It was pretty awful, undoubtably the worst year of my life. On top of everything else my Mom died that year and I wasn't able to "leave the field" to be with her. It's taken a lot of His lovingkindness and tender mercies to forgive myself for not being there for her. Does anyone else remember the "sky is falling, the sky is falling", let's plan on living off the land in the wilderness when the country falls spiel?

I remember that! Hadn't thought about it in so long. I had completely blocked it out of my mind. I was on my interim year as a WOW "branch?" coordinator in Alabama. We were definitely told to "lockbox" what happened. I never knew exactly what happened except that the bc got so teed off at one of the Wows that he shot him dead. I remember that the "leadership" was upset because they had told the murderer's wife to forget about him and move back out of the state but she stayed near the prison where he was incarcerated. They may have been family corps. Yes, that was such a "great year". I knew that murderer because I was WOW in Tuscaloosa and closest to Alexander City. We had a plan from meetings with the limb coordinator to meet the murderer and his Wow family in the woods and survive off the land when the country was supposed to fall that year. Oh yes, we had our fifty pound sack of millet and maps of the Alabama wilderness where we were supposed to meet when the sh**t hit the fan. Made for a great time, especially when I found out about the murder...

I don't have a rhyme to contribute, but I'm very proud to say that I'm so out of touch with TWI that I actually thought this thread was about Rosie O'Donnell.

Eeeww. That was so disgusting. I'm still trying to recover from that assault. Thanks for taking care of it so quickly. I'm so glad my kids weren't around. You guys are the greatest!

Wow, thanks! Can you tell that to my 15 year old son? Having a teenager really keeps you humble. I'm still trying to get used to these aliases so I'm not sure who you are, but all the 11th corps were very cool. You guys are fun, I think I'll stay and sip some java with you guys.

I remember Steve Ransom (amazing the names you remember when something triggers a memory peg) when we were done with our "solos or duos or ho-hos or whatever the correct word was) came forth with a huge snake skin that he had killed in his hooch, killed it and skinned it. Who knew he was such an outdoorsman. That's when I got real thankful that I hadn't slept in my hooch. My idea of a roughing it now is sleeping in a three star hotel.

Oh yeh, mine was really beautiful too, but I was too afraid of snakes and bugs to sleep in it so I slept outside and woke up to pouring rain in my face and nowhere to go to come in from it. Never been so up-close and personal w nature before or since.

Hey ExCath, Love you too. I have a great if fuzzy memory (well it was only 25 years ago) of being on a ROA clean-up crew with you and a bunch of other fun 9th corps. (Wasn’t that you?) We rode around in the back of a big truck picking up really gross, stinky garbage and getting filthy and the weird thing was it was a blast. I think it was the company.

Hi Firefly, I just joined the GS cafe this weekend so I'm a real newbie. I saw your query about Dale Sides and thought I would respond since I've known Dale since 1974 when his WOW family "witnessed" to me in New Orleans. I didn't have much contact with him for quite a few years after that, except he came to Emporia to teach some class when I was in the 9th Corps. I think he probably got carried a way a bit like all of us did with the culture in the Way but I didn't know him well enough to say anything more about that time. My husband and I left TWI in 1987 and spent a number of years after that trying to figure things out. We met with a few other ex-way people in a home fellowship but it was pretty dead. Then in approx. 1994 a friend invited Dale Sides to come out and teach a class he was giving on Exercising Spiritual Authority. I can honestly say it was a turning point in my life. I got called back to God and actually wanted to join in with the rest of the Church. After Dale's class we joined a real church and started teaching and ministering again, this time not as a little splinter group but joined with others in the body of Christ. I think that Dale is one of a very few ex-way people whose ministries have actually been accepted by top leaders in the body of Christ like C. Peter Wagner, Chuck Pierce and others. I'm not "in" his ministry. In fact as someone else said it's a parachurch ministry and you can't join it. Anyway I wouldn't be nervous about receiving your friend. (BTW, I really liked your personal statement. I feel pretty much the same way about the years in TWI. And I love Eldredge's books so it must be cool for your hubby to fellowship with him.)

Hi, All of my immediate family are deceased but I have cousins and an Uncle in New Orleans. My uncle lives on the West Bank which didn't fare too badly but he's in his eighties and had to evacuate for several months. He spent several months "on the road" travelling with my cousin and her family to various friends houses around the country. It was quite an ordeal. My cousin had a house uptown but the roof was damaged and so water and then mold got in the house. It took about a year to make it habitable again. My other cousin's husband passed away in December and I know that stress from the whole ordeal was partly to blame for his death. I know many people are still affected by it. I pray for New Orleans to recover. The successful Saints season was a real shot in the arm for many in the city. Too bad they didn't make it all the way...

Sorry, fellowshipper, I didn't realize it was an insult. I just thought I remembered that some of the "in crowd" used to call you that. Best to you and your wife down under!
