I wanted to extend my well wishes to all of you. I am thankful that GS is still available to those that need it. I, personally, am thankful for my family. All the siblings are getting together and for the first time since the Nixon administration, all are sober. That means alot. It is a time that I consider precious. I am hopeful that this week can be a time to look at the people, places and things that we are fortunate to have. More so, I hope that those still bound by TWI can open their eyes and rekindle relationships with their real families. And I am hopeful that anyone that I hurt by actions will find a place to forgive me. Again have a safe holiday with those that you love.

I think the only Neil Diamond CD affected is his latest one, "12 Songs".

Sony Music has just revealed that they put software on CD’s that they released over the past 8 months. This software is automatically installed on your system when you play the CD on your computer. The software can be used by malicious hackers to control your computer. They have since recalled all of the copies and are replacing them with CD’s that don’t have this software on it. (Among the CD’s included are Neil Diamond, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Coldplay) If you have played any CD’s from Sony music in the past 8 months on your computer you probably have the software on your PC. There is a tool expected in the next day or so to fix the problem. There is no danger if you play the CD’s in your car or home stereos. Here is a link of some of the titles, as well as how to check to see if a CD has this software. http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/004144.php I will post a link of the remedy tool as soon as I get it and test it.

Comcast is positioning themselves. They are advertising nationally, even though they are clearly not in Every market. The market is going to be changing drastically in the next few years. Cable companies are going to become libraries and offer movies AND tv shows on demand. Some are doing it now. Before the end of the year, all the major networks will have a delivery system. ABC NBC and CBS are testing the waters now. DVR's(Digital Video Recorders) have helped to push that allowing time shifting of shows. They will feed that market if there is a buck to be made. I missed an episode of a show a few weeks ago and went to iTunes and downloaded the episode the day after it aired. Hopefully the flat rate model of charges will be replaced by a pay per show model. And a new delivery model is being implemented by Verizon, Fiber Optics. The system has the ability to handle a large delivery system -- total on demand!. The problem is that implementation will take a few years as new fiber optic cable needs to laid down. The internet has all the communication companies rethinking their models and now they are playing catch up. Hopefully in all of this, multiple choices will be available to the consumer and the prices will come down.

good feedback. If it got to the point of charging, I would start another site for that. This site needs to be free.

I think the title was longer, but just can't remember it right now.

I have had a number of GSers approach me asking if I would open a forum for those of you self employed. I had something years ago called something like, selfish self promotion. This would be along the lines of individuals starting a thread giving info on what services they provide or products you sell. I am not sure how specific we should get with this. But for now, I would like to know what kind of interest there would be in this. (There is also the possibility of branching this into a seperate web site showcasing products.)

Setting up a computer for games for a young child
pawtucket replied to ChasUFarley's topic in Computer Questions
Chas, There is an unadvertised mode in Windows/Internet Explorer that is called "Kiosk mode" This allows you to set up just what you want accessible and disabling the start menu, I believe, is part of that mode. I have never tried it, but if you do a search for it, I am sure you will find info. As far as on and off line, I will check online. There is a router that came out that allows you to "schedule" the online availability of individual computers on the network. It resolves some software related apps that children can easily overwrite. -
Roy, They have been advertising that movie for a few weeks (before your prophecy!!!) Did you leave your TV on while you were sleeping one night?

Oaks, Everyone goes through it. I think it is healthy. GS is used for different reasons, from connecting with old friends to getting some much needed answers to being around people with similar experiences. It is triage for those that need a quick fix. It is NOT all things to all people, which is very good. Your journey will bring you many places, I for one am thankful that this was one of your stopping grounds.

One of the dang Administrators was fooling around in the back room and flipped a switch that sent everyone links instead of icons. If you clear your cache file, you should be able to get all the graphic elements.

Wish I could tell you. We are still nailing things down in the back room and I think we wallpapered over a set of controls.

now that Ham is going, I've emailed the rest of you the new coordinates for the roast.

I had to do something. Satori was talking about smilies.

I think that threads are similar to a school debate. The conversation moves forward, points are clarified and changed as the debate progresses. I certainly want enough time for people to correct or modify a post, but not enough time to destroy the cadence of a thread I’ve read the posts and think that an eight hour time limit would be a good place to move. We can try it for a few months, if it causes more problems than it solves, then we will revisit it. I don’t want to bring back deleting posts I'd rather read an explanation for an empty post than see blank space. I realize not ALL threads are debates, and shouldn't be treated as debates. Even with those threads, I would rather read an explanation, then see the whole thing disappear

IF you post in a thread and THEN post again within TEN minutes of the FIRST post, your 2nd post AND your 1st post will become ONE.

Anyone out there familiar with portable digital audio recorder? I've been looking to get one. Would like a multi track. Most use will be for spoken audio.

1. There is no setting to allow for a grace period before having an "edited by" tag. 2. Posts are automatically combined to prevent flooding the forum. If you wait ten minutes to post, it will show up as a separate post.
