The monks know the value of good booze!!!
-
Spiderman?
-
People pour the booze on it right after it comes out of the oven, the paper surrounding the cake helps to hold the extra booze on top which allows the alcohol to seep in slowly. Many people get their fruitcakes months ahead of time so they can slowly feed it liquor before christmas, some even submerge their cake in booze when it comes out of the oven before it gets stored in a tin. Many people keep their fruitcake for years, often feeding it with bourbon or other liquors every few months.

Ok, here's the rest of the quote from Rhino, sans swipes at Paw, hopefully the mods will let it stay: "The site "belongs" to many worthy contributors .. whether it finds a new home or not. ..and it needs to go to some others ... Those that contributed back in "the day" should continue ... some of you worked harder at this waydale stuff and have much to offer ... you folks are the ones that should carry on ..." It sounded elitist and had an air of entitlement.
-
Ex, I guess you're referring to my use of the word entitlement, here's why I said that. It was the line by Rhino, "The site "belongs" to many worthy contributors .. Those that contributed back in "the day" should continue".. That sounds very elitist, and was an attack on Paw, to new posters, and anyone that doesn't agree with Rhino's statements, plain and simple.
-
Wow, I'm almost speechless over the vitriol and entitlement some of these posters are showing here. Its appalling to think Paw has personally endured such dialog, who knew such searing magma lurked under the surface here. (well I guess the personal attack against Paw got deleted, had no idea Rhino felt that way and so strongly about Paw and this website) This website is owned and run by Pawtucket, we use it, we contribute to the dynamic, but if paw wanted to he could close it down tonight. He didn't even have to post a thread about it, he could have just announced the closing of the website. What's stopping the ones who don't like how its run here and think this website "belongs" to them, go out and start their own forum and run it the way they like?

Waterbuffalo, the one thing most fruitcake connoisseurs love about fruitcake is that it is liberally drenched and soaked in liqueurs. Make sure you pick one that is!!!

One option no one is discussing is that anyone of us, or a group of us could start our own website forum, especially if Paw needs to either be cut free of GS as soon as possible, or leave it in an archival state. Passing the mantle is a tradition already, Waydale to Greasespot, Greasepot to ??? There are a lot of web hosting companies out there providing solutions, and web hosting can be done in many different ways. I have been involved with another website that recently split 3 different ways after the original owner died. The original forum was carried on by the brother, but some of the mods got together and started their own web forum, and one other poster started their own too. The mods site does very well, has a lot of traffic, carved out its own niche and has the same heart as the original website. The original forum run by the brother is doing well also. The other poster's website didn't fare so well and tanked. The same dynamic could happen here too, if Paw needs his life back, for whatever reasons, he should be able to shut GS down, and another website could carry on as a forum.

Fear not, even gas station mini marts and liquor stores have potential gift items, but, nothing says it like jewelry!!! I love the constant audible messages that you can hear in the background, "Express your feelings, apologize without caviots, help with cooking, volunteer to change diapers, listen to others..."

Oakspear-that is sooo cool! I donated 4 bags of canned goods to the local food bank, there are so many more needy people this year!!

I have time I can invest, but not enough computer savy, could the computer savyness be contracted out, with the cost offset by ads, affiliate links and banners on GS? If no one steps up and the site goes archival, perhaps a bulletin board feature could be established and maybe moderated with a 24-48 hour delay by someone other than Paw. The way the ex-twi yahoo group site operates is they always have a 24 hour moderator delay on all posts, albeit, its much smaller than GS, maybe the forums could be parceled out to different mods for each section. Although alot of the life would be missing from the forum that way, but all nastiness and inappropriate comments could be filtered out before they go online.

There's a good program on the History Channel today about books that were excluded from the cannon of scripture that we have today. Interesting stuff, the program is entitled "Banned from the Bible" and will be rebroadcast on Thursday night and early Friday morning Dec 25, 26.

I know, you can't make up for lost time, especially when it comes to family, this I know. Is there anything we can do to make this an easier transition for you? I would love to keep the GS going, but I think you take priority over a web site.
-
Sounds like it's enough to make you pull your hair out...One of your great qualities is your patience and longsuffering, that's kind of what makes this website so great. You aren't selfish, you didn't turn this into a cash cow, you haven't ruled with an iron fist, and you tried to be fair to everyone, and have been considerate to all sides. From what you said, I think you need to untangle your life from this web site though, I have seen other websites do well when managed completely by a moderator group, and I've seen websites that have done well when sold or passed on to others. Is there not anyone that fits those two categories that could carry on without you?

I originally posted a bad link, here is the amended YouTube vid:

OMG, what a nasty poster, I am so sorry this has been so costly to your life Pawtucket, you have done such a great service to all that visit here. Isn't there anything that could be done rather than close it down to posting? Couldn't there be one person or a group of persons that could moderate the goings on here without loosing the heart & soul of this place?
-
I know you are only asking for votes in the poll, not comments, but... Could the web site be passed on to someone else? Or to the mods collectively? I think there still is a need for GreaseSpot's forums. I left twi in the late '80's, greatly damaged by LCM, et al, I carried that hurt till I came here and found out the truth. I came here just 2 years ago, I'm glad there was a forum to go to, not just archival information. The poster's interactions breathes life into the information contained here, sometimes information is hard to pull up with the search engine, it is great to be able to post questions. I am really glad some people like Don'tWorry, and Socks, etc, who were there behind the scenes with vp and who were there wayback with Waydale, still actively post here, another piece of the puzzle always falls into place and I learn something new everytime they post. ...And I am still extreemly bummed that the information on Waydale is not available to late comers like me, I would love to have access to that content. I am deeply sorry this website has cost you so much personally, isn't there a way to save GS without having you loose so much personal time in managing it?

Ok, TLB, I won't get too picky here about the title, It's No Reservations, I don't think anyone else would be able to get Anthony Bourdain even!
-
You are 50% right sir! :) If this was the lottery, it would be up to at least 5 million by now, if it's Anthony Bourdaine, then the show would be called.....

songs remembered from just one line
now I see replied to bulwinkl's topic in Movies, Music, Books, Art
The weird thing is, I woulda guessed that song if it was any line other than the first line. -
Bravo George!!!!!!!
-
I know the book, but I forget the author's name....
-
If you scrunch it all together and invision a slightly different spelling....then you've got it! A very popular tv series in the '50's & '60's, loved by families, dogs and forest rangers alike!!
-
I kinda figured this one would be more female oriented, although there is a reference to the travel channel in the quotes, which narrows it down to 2 shows really..... Thomas, it's not Murphy, although it is a travelogue style of reporting of certain things...
