That's an exceptionally moving story, Pirate. I remember going to Washington on a church youth-group trip when I was about 15. Of the many, many sites we saw, that monument moved me more than anything else. It still does, all these years later. Thanks for passing on those personal stories of the men the monument immortalizes.

What a little sweetie! Congrats to you all!

Mike, if you're going to make that distinction between the Bible and the Word of God, then how do you handle this statement, which I heard VPW make on several occasions: "The Bible does not contain the Word of God, it is the Word of God." That doesn't seem to fit with what you're saying here.

If you're getting charged per post, and the length of the post doesn't matter, how 'bout deleting all the posts that just say "LOL" or have nothing in 'em but an emoticon? If that would help but is too time-consuming, I'd be glad to lend a hand if you'd like. Back in the day before the WWW, "me too" posts that didn't really add anything were highly discouraged, as a "waste of bandwidth." Lemme know. I could only work on it in the evening, but I'd be happy to do it. By when do you have to get this pruning done?

Someone spread the word before a meal that when we sang roll-away, at the end of the final chorus everyone was supposed to roll out of their chairs onto the floor. It went off like clockwork. Everyone hit the floor like a precision water ballet team. Fadder Moynihan just stood there stunned and speechless.

It was a hot summer day at the Indiana Campus and we'd been painting barns all afternoon. Aside from the heat, it was a fun job. We cranked up the devil music as high as we could and joked and laughed and slapped paint on everything that didn't move. When we finished for the day, we talked our work coordinater, Dennis McG, into drving us into town so we could buy some nice, cold beer. He was nervous about it, but somehow he gave in, and we all piled into a van, picked up a 6-pack, and enjoyed our break under the trees next to the Gene Stratton Porter cabin near the campus. I thought Dennis was going to pee his pants for fear of getting caught, but he was a good sport.

Unholy Kisses and the Interpretation of Tongues
Linda Z replied to satori001's topic in About The Way
To avoid total gross-out as a woman on HQ staff, one had to learn the evasive technique when certain men approached for a hug and kiss: To quickly turn the head and offer the cheek before one of those gross, sloppy kisses could hit their mark. If the two guys I knew who gave those awful excuses for "brotherly kisses" thought they were being in the least bit sexy, they were sooooooooooo wrong. I might have been naive, but I didn't see them as sexual moves. I saw them as badly executed kisses from two men who must have led such sheltered lives that they didn't know enough to close their mouths and stop drooling all over the place. I wasn't about to tell them; I was too embarrassed for them. -
O&A, yep...in quicksand, it would appear.

Wow, P-Mosh, I'm glad you said that. I downloaded RealPlayer on my old computer, which was a lot older and slower than the one I have now, and it totally flocked up my computer. I thought it was just cuz I didn't have enough oomph to support it. I think I'll get rid of it on my new one, too!

ps, I'm glad Rochelle had someone like you as a friend, and I'm sorry for the hurt you've had. Thank you for telling us more about her. She was a beautiful young woman, and I trust all will be made right for her in the end. God doesn't "kick us out" or send us away. GS is a great way to rediscover old friends. I hope you'll stay and find some. Welcome.

What Jardinero said reminds me of a line from that old poem: "One man awake can awaken another...."

Congrats, Herbie!! It's got to be gratifying for you, after all the hard work you did, even if it IS a labor of love. I'm reminded once again of the Ira H&arns and the Grace Bli&ses and the El&ie Wilsons and the many others never in twi who have advocated for growing and eating better food, taking better care of our land, and finding better ways to do all of these things. Hats off to you and your colleagues in this venture!!!

That's a sweet story about you and Jasmine, HCW. How proud I know you are of her, and how happy she must be that Daddy didn't leave her to chase after bucks. Money's a fleeting thing anyway, not lasting like the love between a dad and his daughter. I loved New Knoxville, too. When I left HQ, I was glad, but when I drove out of NK, I cried. I made such great friends among the people in town. My landlord used to come by while I was at work and leave tomatoes and other veggies in my fridge. My closest friend when I was on staff was a guy who grew up in NK, and I still stay in touch with him occasionally. Aside from a few people who automatically wrote anyone off who was from twi, most were warm and kind, and I love living in such a small town. I still miss it, believe it or not.

I told this long ago on Waydale, but I'll repeat it for those who weren't around then. We had a member of the "sunset Corps," Clarence G., in our Corps. Clarence tended to fall asleep in class. Nancy Duncan was teaching in the chapel, and Clarence was sitting near the front of the room at the end of a row, on the aisle. Suddenly, Clarence, who was sleeping, fell out of his seat and rolled right into the aisle. He was fine, and we all had a good laugh.

Tom, that story about Martha (what a sweetie, by the way) became legendary. It is my all-time favorite funny story about Way Daze.
