Exsie said: I wasn't talking about your posts at all. You speak from firsthand knowledge, and I respect that.
  2. Groucho, common knowledge is just that: common, in the sense of "5 a : falling below ordinary standards : SECOND-RATE b : lacking refinement : COARSE (my emphasis added). How did a discussion about which women were ordained become a mud-slinging party?
  3. Belle said: That was meant as a joke, Belle. Sorry I didn't make that clear. Believe me, I don't envy police officers their jobs. I have a couple friends who are cops, and it's not something I'd have the courage to be. I really didn't mean to press your buttons, and I understand why it's a sensitive subject for you. My concern is as much for the safety of the police officers as for the innocent bystanders who have been killed. I googled "high-speed chases" +fatalities and found quite a few sites that talked about the number of policemen and women who have died in these situations and quite a few officers were quoted who shared my concern. Again, this was never about bashing the police.

Thank you for saying that, Oak. That thread had become nothing but a gossip-fest and I was going to post something to that effect on the thread when I got home tonight. I happen to know that some people who willingly slept around in twi 20 or 30 years ago regret that today. Why should anyone in that category--whether he or she slept with a head honcho or anyone else--have his/her name dragged through the mud decades later? And some of that stuff is nothing but speculation and hearsay. We dilute the genuine anti-twi message of GS, IMO, by throwing around slanderous rumors and wild claims. There was plenty wrong with twi that can be talked about without that.
  5. mstar, I read online about the proposed use of something just like that. It said it's in development. I hope it succeeds, because it looks like a possible nonlethal solution. Krys, I'm glad you didn't think that! Yes, people can be real jerks, can't they? But how wonderful of the "ice tea" lady--just shows people can be terrific, too.
  6. Krys, I'm sorry if you think I'm "judging" the police. I like the police. I admire the courage it takes to do what they do. I must not be making myself clear here, because this keeps coming up. What I'm judging is the procedures that we have in place for chasing down criminals at high speeds, resulting in the deaths of people who just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
  7. Annette Bening Love Affair Warren Beatty
  8. STL, I'd hardly compare people suing over spilling hot coffer on themselves or getting fat eating fast food to losing a child because of a possibly unnecessary police chase. I'm looking for fresh new ideas/solutions here, like the one proposed by 2nd James. I think perhaps you've been watching too much Inspector Gadget, JJ, :D--> but I think you're on the right track. There's gotta be a better way.
  9. Well, I'll be the low-brow dumba$$ here who admits to enjoying many of the "reality shows." :D--> Yes, a lot of them are simply extended game shows. I don't have a problem with that. I also know the producers manipulate situations to get certain reactions from the participants and that these shows are edited for more drama and humor. I don't have a problem with that, either. I don't want to see the boring stuff they've edited out. I don't like the most of the dating-type reality shows, though. Nothing appeals to me about watching people who've just met, most of whom are probably in it for the money or a Hollywood break, slobbering all over each other and boo-hooing if they don't get picked. My favorite is The Amazing Race. I've seen parts of the world on that show I'll probably never see in person, and I love the challenges and twists and turns the contestants face. I like Survivor for the same reasons, just not as much. >Fear Factor was fun the first season, except for the segments where they ate gross stuff, but the other challenges have gotten boring...they're too much like the ones from past episodes. I liked the challenges on The Apprentice, too. So there. It's out. I like reality shows. But I have to agree with Pirate about the Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston fiasco. Who cares to watch their day-to-day lives? Not me! I've never watched the Gastineau girls or the other shows like it. Just not interested.
  10. HCW, I hadn't heard that about Sal. Good for him! I quit before RR could fire me, but I'm sure she would have. She didn't care much for people who spoke up. She told me I was "too vocal." hahahahaha I don't know where most of my sponsors are anymore, I'm sad to say. If I did, I'd call them and say, "Thank you for believing in and supporting me. Even if the whole thing went down the crapper, I know you gave for the right reason and I'm grateful. I did the best I knew how to deserve your support, and I hope life is treating you splendidly after all these years."
  11. Wingnut, nothing pi$$es me off more than people who don't pull over for emergency vehicles. The people who were killed weren't killed because they failed to yield to an emergency vehicle. They were hit by the person who was being chased. Perhaps you've never been in traffic when all of a sudden a police car comes speeding toward you lickety split and the siren doesn't go on until the car is almost on you. I have. On a crowded city street with both lanes bumper to bumper, sometimes there's nowhere to go! I think it's ridiculous to blame the innocent bystanders who were killed--not because they didn't get out of the way, but perhaps because they couldn't or because the crook being chased didn't happen to have his siren on!
  12. That part isn't hard to understand at all. That's why I said in my opening post: "Of course the car thieves and the kid with the outstanding warrant were ultimately to blame when these tragedies happened." See, we agree. :-) I didn't start this topic to blame the police. I'd just like to see some new technology or a new method for determining when and how police chases should be carried out, so that this wouldn't happen so often. There was another incident I didn't even mention that happened a couple months ago in which a mom and her infant were badly injured.
  13. David said: "I'm so torn on this. I'm sure the mother of the 6-year-old boy who was killed on his way home from school might question that. I agree with Satori that it's a catch-22. On one hand, you don't want criminals to know that they can speed off and no one will chase them, but is the life of an adorable little 6-year-old boy walking home from school worth a ticket for expired plates? Sheesh. Can't they shoot out the tires like in the movies or something? Is there no alternative to driving through heavy traffic at 80 or 90 mph and killing innocent bystanders? Mr. Ham, I think those devices you described should be standard equipment on all cars. That sure should cut down on car thefts and hence on the need to chase after people driving stolen cars.
  14. Sandra Day O'Connor and the other Supreme Court judges go out to lunch. The waiter asks O'Connor what she'd like. "Prime rib, please." "What kind of dressing on your salad?" "Bleu cheese" "Mashed or baked?" "Baked" "And the vegetables?" "They'll just have what I'm having."
  15. In the past week in Cleveland, three people have been killed in car accidents because of a police chase. In another police chase a couple months ago, an infant was thrown from a car and badly injured. I'm not antipolice, and I'm certainly not against their trying to collar all the criminals they can, but at what point should they stop and consider innocent bystanders before they go flying down city streets in pursuit of a 16-year-old car thief? Is a car worth the deaths of people who did nothing wrong? A couple years ago, a little boy walking home from school near my house was killed and his little friend badly injured when a kid being chased by police lost control and veered onto the sidewalk. The guy being chased had an outstanding warrant and panicked. The result was heartbreaking. Of course the car thieves and the kid with the outstanding warrant were ultimately to blame when these tragedies happened. But what kind of constraint should police show when pursuing nonviolent criminals in highly populated areas? I could see not backing off if they were chasing an armed robber or a convicted rapist or a murderer. But I'd think they'd weigh the possible consequences carefully before risking bystanders' lives to chase a car thief. If I owned the car, I'd rather file an insurance claim than see innocent people run down. This issue really troubles me. Any thoughts?
  16. Tom, I think so too...just different planes, so to speak.
  17. Catcup said: I know what you're saying, Catcup, but I would contend that it always works perfectly. I believe it's above and beyond the reach of any man's meddling with it, messing it up, causing it not to work. I think this is one thing VP got right doctrinally, if not in practice: that the Body of Christ is perfect and eternal. To say that anything we can do can make it work improperly is, to me, like saying I can reach up into the night sky and move the moon over a few hundred miles. God's in charge of the Body of Christ. He puts it together according to His plan and it will stay together throughout eternity. It's just not something we can see the perfection in by looking at men. I believe God makes no mistakes when He places members in the Body as it pleases Him. I don't think the Body of Christ is something you can "see in action" like VP taught. I think we can be aware of it deep inside, spiritually, but those are just glimpses. Sorry, I don't want to get this thread sent to the Doctrinal forum, but this subject is near to my heart. And Litwin, I enjoyed your earlier post on this subject.

So's my oven, but I don't sit in it. :P-->
  19. John, are you saying you never read it or are you recommending that people never should read it? I thought it was an excellent book. Tastefully written and with some great insights.
  20. Yeah, and apparently it worked! :D-->
  21. Oh good, cuz I didn't have a chance to sit down and watch it yet anyway. Arthur Liza Minnelli Cabaret
  22. Welllll, what if I decided to watch said movie while doing paperwork, huh huh? Somneone has to put us out of our misery. Now that wouldn't be cheating, would it???
  23. Happy birthday to our curmudgeon with the big heart!
  24. Is it cheating if you own the video and go look at the box? Doggone it, I can think of two other actors in the movie, but I can't think of what else they've appeared in, even though I know one of them has been in tons of movies. Help!!
