  1. Can you call your vet and tell him what you told us here? Maybe Zippie's doctor can tell you over the phone whether or not the situation warrents an office visit. Maybe you can find out if anything needs to be done over the phone. I know some vets won't do anything without seeing the patient. But if they know the animal, some are willing to dispense advice over the phone. UGH! I wish there was a spell check here!

CoolChef- I am so sorry about your friend. Love to you. And your friend. DMiller-I told everyone at work your humanitarian joke. LOL! I'm still chuckling. As far as God giving Noah animals to eat, yes, he did. But doesn't verse 4 make the eating of flesh impossible? (I'm not trying to be arguementative, I really don't know. Every time I've been to the supermarket, I see bloody slabs for sale. And I've never been hunting.) Either way, God's original desire was for everyone to eat vegetarian, even our carnivorous dogs, which can be done today, as evidenced by the newspaper articles. (Gen. 1:29&28) And to everyone- I think you are an awesome, amazing, wonderful, loving, group of people.

There are many, many people who feel that we were designed to consume dead animals. My suggestion would be to compare our bodies with known carnivores, like lions and bears, and with herbivores, like cows and horses. There's a sweet cartoon by Dan Piraro, creator of Bizarro comic, that shows the difference. I know of other movies, but they're VERY gruesome, and I don't know if many people can watch them all the way through. But here it is: For me, the good that PETA does outweighs any bad. They have a low cost, mobile spay/neuter clinic that travel in low income areas, providing service for people that could never afford it. They provide free dog houses and hay, for dogs who are chained outside. Can you imagine spending your whole life crammed in an area so small that you are unable to even lift your arms? That's the life of a battery chicken, an animal that PETA fights for. There are some over zealous activists in PETA, but you would be able to find these people in any organization. And there are many other animal rights groups, who do questionable and illegal things to promote the cause, but PETA is automatically assigned the blame because they are the biggest and the most well known. I'm not familiar with any campaigns against the AKC. I know PETA does not feel it is ethical to breed dogs, because every newborn pup means a another dog remanins in a shelter. And I know PETA is against tail docking, and unnecessary and cruel practice. And of course against hunting. But as far as competions like agility training, there is nothing wrong there, as long as the training is done with respect and love. I became vegan when I saw "Chew on This." I think everyone should should see "Meet Your Meat."
  4. There are things we can do to help companion animals that are suffering. Write your congressmen and senators, both state and national, and demand that companion animals are treated as more than property under the law. Never buy animals from pet shops. Donate time and/or money to organizations that rescue, house, and/or educate the public about the horror of homeless companion animals. Let others know that situations like the one White Dove shared exist, and what they can do to help. Remember that animals have no voice but ours, and depend on us to help. Even the smallest action you do to help them reduces suffering.

  6. Al Poole-You are right. I shouldn't have said that Target is ethical. Its a corporate machine like most others, concerned with the bottom line. What I should have said is that it is more ethical to shop there, than at Wal-Mart. It is the lesser of two evils. As far as charitable contributions, Target gives 3 times as much as Wal-Mart does. http://www.jimgilliam.com/2004/12/target_d...han_walmart.php Target is not owned by a French company. It is owned by the Target Corporation, and which was once Dayton Hudson. It is in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. http://sites.target.com/images/corporate/a...ry_timeline.pdf http://www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/t/target-viet.htm I think Belle's post covers the rest. Me too.
  7. That's wonderful, Kris!
  8. I agree with the APA when there is a difference between consentual adolescent-adult sex, and child-adult sex. I don't think my 18 year old son should be labeled a child sexual predator if he has sex with his 17 year old girlfriend. (In case he reads this, I don't think he should be even thinking about having sex with her!) But there was a case where a girl's mother filed charges against her daughter's boyfriend, and he will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
  9. Has anyone seen the Wal-Mart movie? There's a trailer for it here: http://www.walmartmovie.com/ PBS also did a Frontline piece on Wal-Mart that showed its practices. While its true that other companies and corporations are profit mongers and unscrupulous pariah, they are no where near the scale that Wal-Mart is. It isn't just the mom and pop store that are going under. Because of Wal-Marts demands for lower prices, Rubbermaid and Masterlock had to shut down many plants and fire all the people that work there. GE, Levi Strauss, and Dial soap had to close American plants, and shift work to overseas. Wal-Mart is also the largest corporation in the world. I do understand that because of finances, or logistics, some people are forced to shop there. But in Tampa, there are two stores that are offering $4 drugs, Wal-Mart and Target. Will most people go to Target where the cost of other goods is higher, but the company is ethical? Or will they go to Wal-mart to save a few bucks?
  10. I think the difference lies in the employees who sell the product. Wal-Mart does not pay for most of their employees health insurance, we do. The biggest recipients of BadgerCare in Wisconsin are Wal-Mart employees. Full time employees must wait 6 months until they are qualified for Wal-Mart's health insurance, and part-time must wait 2 years, and then cannot include spouses or children. Women and ethnic minorities are not given the same oppurtunity for advancement as white males.
  11. I saw this a few days ago. http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/News/...or4Dollars.aspx I had mixed thoughts about it. Its good for the general population of Tampa, especially the retired people living on fixed incomes. They won't have to decide whether or not to eat or take their medicine. But I thought of the Wal-Mart employees, and how even with the $4 drugs, they probably won't be able to afford to go to the doctor to get a presciption. And why the only reason Wal-Mart is doing this is to make people think they are a kind and generous employer. Then I saw this. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/09/22/...in2032485.shtml I thought, hurray! Now people won't have to shop at evil Wal-Mart! They can go to Target! But someone said that most people will still go to Wal-Mart for their prescription. Because while they're there, they can buy those $2 towels, and get their tires rotated, and all the other things that go on in Wal-Mart today. So, my question is, do you think low prices and convienence out weigh ethics? Do you think most people are willing to spend a little more to ensure integrity?
  12. Ahoy and welcome Sierra! I saw that you are also a pirate! Aaarr! Do you know why Donna doesn't live in the chalet anymore? And so you know what its being used for?
  13. If you're using the KJV of the Bible as your reference for truth, then I would think, according to your definition, that people could only experience true charity after the resurrection, after the judgement. Because that is when evil will be destroyed, and evil doers will no longer exsist. (Revelations 20 & 21, and various other parts of the KJV) But, I would think I Cor. 13, which talks of charity, makes known that charity is available now. Can you show how you got from one point to the other?

Wow, that's really beautiful. And humbling.

    Prank Alert

My son has a pen that does the same thing. And he has a game, kind of like that Simon game, but if you miss the sequence, you get shocked. And its not just a little jolt. It really hurts! I'm with you. I don't think this is funny at all.
  16. Thank you for sharing the verdict. It takes a strong and loving person to reach out and give in the middle of their pain. You and your family make this world so much better. Love to you, and your family.
  17. Yeah, I saw her story too. She's amazing! People like these always make me think twice about complaining.
  18. My mom was the person who introduced me to TWI, so its hard for me to know what are her thoughts, and what is really TWI brain. I thought of a couple of things. "Learn to type. You'll always have a job if you can type." No comment needed. "Look at this! A candy bush! Mmmmmmm! Taste how sweet this candy is!" I don't remember how old I was when she told me this, at least 5. And I don't remember when I found out that cherry tomatoes weren't really candy. I still love them. "Don't yell around the baby. It hurts their ears." I wish Craig would have learned this one.
  19. I just got an e-mail for Nava Atlas' new book, and thought of this thread. Her website is here: http://vegkitchen.com/booksale-2006-09.htm
  20. I know this is really pushing the topic, but there's a photographer who has a series of pictures called "dreams of flying." They're beautiful. http://www.janvonholleben.com/dreams_of_flying/index.html
  21. Copying Templelady-hope you don't mind! When you was in The cult some call the Way Ministry Did you believe you were a Wierwille-light? Was VPW your God? I didn't think so then, but looking back I looked to his teachings for answers, not God's, so yeah, I guess he was. Did you believe everything taught by the Way Ministry? Not everything, but alot. I never thought the teaching of the manifestations were right. "All nine-all the time" I don't think VPW really believed evrything he taught either. If he did, why was there such an emphasis on five senses learning, and not walking by the spirit? Did you think the Way Ministry was the only true church? I thought TWI was the best there was, and no other church could come close. But how do you think now? Do you believe that the Way Ministry wasted part of your life? Yes and no. I met some awesome people, one being my husband, got turned on to some foods I would have never tried, like raw potatoes with Spike, and falafel, and had some good times. I think my time with TWI has made me more tolerant of others, too. But I do wonder what might have been. If my life would have been better, if I would have been a better person, if I would have had more to offer. Do you hate the Way Ministry now? Its neither here nor there for me. Do you hate VPW or the deeds of VPW? I've met VP, but I've never spent time with him like others have. But I have experienced the trickle down effect. I don't have respect for VP, but I wouldn't say I hate him, or anyone. But his deeds? Yeah, I hate them. Who is your God now? The God of my childhood. A lot of hard questions but maybe asking our-self these question may help our person life and they can be asked in private but we need to face the truth what ever it may be.
  22. I've been craving potatoes like crazy, when I saw a recipe for Pizza Potatoes on the All-Creatures site. http://www.all-creatures.org/recipes/pizzapotato.html I haven't tried it yet, but it looks fun! I haven't had pizza with cheese for a few years now, so if I were to make it, I'd leave off the bean cream sauce. I'd also throw on alot of toppings. Whatever veggies I had in my crisper, like now, it would be the end of the summer zucchini, bell peppers, mushrooms, and onions. Oh, and olives! It wouldn't be pizza without olives. I'm a lazy cook, so I might just buy ready made pizza sauce. But theirs looks good too. I'd throw in some fennel though. Acorn squash stuffed with a rice pilaf is a good fall dish. I cook them separate, then stuff the squash before its served. I'm not a big soup person, but Drty Dzn makes a vegetable stew that's to die for. Maybe he'll give you the recipe. And of course, anything apple or pumpkin!

    The 60s!

I was young in the 60's, but I have an older sister, who for me, personified the 60's. I remember my mother telling her she couldn't play her new record album, "Hair" because there was too much swearing. I remember my sister went to Purdue University. She wanted to go to Indiana University, but wasn't allowed to. IU had co-ed dorms. I remember when my sister brought a young man home, with hair so long you couldn't see his ears. He's my brother-in-law now. Lots of changes in the 60's.
