  1. Sushi---------My wife was born in Queens but raised in "Joisey" She,too, makes that dish with mashed potatoes, hamburger and gravy. It's been awhile since she made it but I think she adds a small amount of green beans too. It's very filling. She calls it shephard's pie. Right at the end she turns on the broiler and it puts a bit of a crust on it. She also has an unusual way of making cornbread. The recipe includes canned creamed corn. cheddar cheese(grated) and diced jalapena peppers (canned). It is much moister than the southern style and the baking seems to tone down the heat of the peppers while accenting their flavor. I don't know if that's regional but I know I'm always ready for seconds(sometimes thirds) :)
  2. Remember that old gasoline company jingle:"Put a tiger in your tank!"? Were they suggesting feline can co-mingle with fish? Isn't there such a critter as the "tiger shark"? Food for thought.
  3. Excathedra------So sorry to hear about your childhood experience. It would seem that, due to your circumstances, your brothers and sisters were not only your siblings but your peers as well. The only conclusion I have been able to draw from this thread is that quantity is not neccessarily relevent to qualityand every situation presents its' own set of deciding values and factors. Mark-------If there was no relevence to your original post it surely wouldn't have hit so many nerves and provoked such lively discourse. My mother is one of 15 siblings so this thread caught my eye. Thank you for presenting this subject for consideration.
  4. OK ,I'll admit I haven't done my "biblical" homework on this issue. I do know, however, that the scientific community has done countless studies comparing how "only" children measure up to those of multiple sibling families. The results are surprising. "Only" children seem to adjust to society every bit as well as those with multiple siblings. Many times the "only " child is more adept at spending time alone, without a need to depend on siblings for interaction. This quality continues into adulthood. Much of what a child learns about social interactions comes by virtue of interacting with peers moreso than with siblings. Long story made short: It is a myth that "only" children are somehow socialogically handicapped . They can grow up to be every bit as well adjusted as children from large families. Extracurricular activities such as sports, drama club, church choir, etc. are important because they serve as a sort of series of lessons on how to fit into social settings and society in general.
  5. Right you are, Mr. Strange. Eddie Floyd cowrote it with Steve Cropper(Booker T.& The MG's ) and had a hit with it in 1966. After that, many, many others covered it, including one who is dicussed quite a bit on the "Guitar" thread, Eric Clapton. Any one of them would have been an appropriate answer. My personal favorite was the cover by Wilson Picket. Annnnnnnnd! Yer Up!

    Dats or Cogs?

"Any ideas for some other impossible crossbreads?" Do you mean like zucchini/sourdough? Or how about French/pumpernickle?
  7. I think the Pawnbroker may be in the back room taking inventory so I'm going to take the liberty of tossing one in the mix. I'm not superstitious about ya But I can't take no chance You got me spinnnin',baby You know I'm in a trance Clue: This has been covered many, many times but the original featured bass work by a certain person recently discussed on the "Guitar " thread.
  8. Garth--------This is a bit off topic from your post but I did want to point out that the speed of light is,in fact, relative to the density of the media through which it is traveling. This density is said to display an "index of refraction". The denser the media, the slower light travels. In physics it is studied along with the other aspects of Snell's law. This same law of physics explains why an object below the surface of a body of water is not where it appears to be,hence if you should reach into the water you will likely miss your intended target. I have always wondered how bears are able to override this when catching salmon. What does all this have to do with light traveling through space? I really don't know but light is energy and energy is always in motion.
  9. According to Associated Press writer David Bauder, Tuesday ,11/21/06, is the release date set for a brand new Beatles album. It will be titled, simply,"Love". This project is the work of Giles Martin who is the son of George Martin. It was recorded primarily at Abbey Road Studios. The album melds and mixes familiar Beatles tunes. Here is an example: "Strawberry Fields" combined with "Hello,Goodbye","Baby You're A Rich Man","Penny Lane" and "Piggies". It all sounds pretty unlikely but the project is said to be endorsed by both remaining Beatles as well as the two widows. I think I'll reserve my judgement until I hear it.
  10. Socks------- To the best of my knowledge, ALL puppies require serious "paper work"!
  11. Jonny--------Though the black bears tend to be less aggressive than the brown bears(of which the grizzly is a member) they can also be quite dangerous. A sow defending her cubs is not something you would ever want to encounter. In northeast Ohio/northwest PA., local communities have been known to ban bird feeders as the feed attracts black bears. Unlike brown bears, black bears have the ability to climb so that compounds the danger. WG---------Glad to hear that all were OK in your latest incident. As to GVT. profits, in many locales, the proceeds from hunting and fishing licenses go into funds that benefit conservation measures and thereby benefit both the wildlife and the human population as well.

Very early on, there was a band called "Knox County Band". The name was derived from their home base in Knox County Ohio. Dean was a guitar player in this group if my memory serves me correctly. PPL was,in a convoluted sense , a mutation of this group. "Ellenwood's Garden" is (as I recall) a tip of the hat to Deans' influence. Vince Gill was also somehow connected to this bunch of young hopefuls as I believe that he too was from the same area. It's been a lot of years since all this happened so my recollections may not be accurate. Jerry Douglas(Dobro Player ,Supreme) was from an area somewhat to the north.(Youngstown, Ohio)

Pure Prairie League once did a song called "Ellenwoods' Garden". Why does that name ring a bell? :)

Many thanks dmiller-------This is perhaps one of the greatest blues albums ever released. This is one of those projects where you completely forget about technique and become lost in the raw emotion that was captured. As a side note(Perhaps of interest to T-Bone and Chas.): The bass player on this one is Donald"Duck"Dunn who paid the bills by playing for Booker T and The MG's but is perhaps best known as the bass player for "The Blues Brothers". Muddy's slide work is like a measuring stick for future bottleneck players. Sam Lay and Buddy Miles are still out working though I'm not sure of "Duck"s' current status. Thanks again for posting that pic.

dmiller--------Nope. It's the one where God is stretching out his hand trom above down to man. On the cover, God more closely resembles Muddy Waters while Man resembles Paul Butterfield( with Butter wearing his trademark shades) I do like the one you posted, however, and can see where that one could also make a great album cover.

Oh, how I envy you, Chatty one. If only I had the strength to part with cd's. I hang on to just about everything with the thought that "someday I'll learn that riff." Of course I never do because I'm not a riff copier kind of guy. Recently I once again lost track of my current copy of "Electric Mud", which is Muddy Waters' attempt at psychodelic music. It's one of my all time favorites next to another Muddy album called "Fathers and Sons". It has some really steller guitar work by Mike Bloomfield not to mention the harp work of Paul Butterfield. I haven't seen any posts from keyboard players here but to any who are looking in, I recommend this same album for some of Otis Spann's best and most soulful tickling of the ivory. Lots of other greats on here too, hence the title "Fathers and Sons". Oh, I forgot to mention that the album cover is a take-off on the famous Michaelangelo painting that depicts God reaching down to man. I don't know how to post that sort of thing but it is pretty cool if you can get a glimpse of it somewhere.
  19. I'm gonna leave here walkin', partner, 'cause I'm pawnshop bound. I need some money in my pocket 'cause I feel like I'm sinkin' down. Sorry, just foolin' around while we're waiting for Pawnbroker That's from "Pawnshop Bound" by Wm. 20. Air conditioners predate WWI and Coke derived its' name from one of its' more notorious ingredients, cocaine. How old must I be to know silly trivia like that?
  21. Putting all PFAL references aside for a moment, may I point out that in biological studies there is a theory that is refered to as the "lock and key theory". This theory is based on genetics and has no connection to any biblical references. IMO, VPW simply restated it to serve his purpose. Elephant +Rhino?------Elephino!

Tom Strange---------I can't really tell from the pic but it looks like that may be a diddly bow. A diddly bow is a one stringed guitar and people make them in all kinds of variations. I'm basing my guess on the fact that the pick-up is sideways and there are no visable tuning machines. Then again, maybe it's a shillaylee that floated over from another thread.
  23. I'm a bit pressed for time but let me just say this: Hmmmph!
  24. Jonny--------Thanks for the biographical info. I saw on the news recently that the fiasco with fresh spinach may have been caused by fecal matter from wild boars. There have been sighting of wild pigs in virtually all the lower 48 states. Wild geese present a similar problem in that areas that they frequent easily become contaminated with E-coli from their droppings. Black bears are constantly increasing in numbers and consequently becoming a danger. It's not too unusual to see coyote roadkill, but recently I saw one stand beside a busy road and wait for traffic to clear, much like you would expect of a domestic dog. I don't know what the answers are but I think we need to continue to search for them. Harp on, fellow bender.
  25. Jonny--------- If you will, consider : a.) The slang definition of Bozo b.) The meaning of "bus" as related to computers c.) They traveled into the future in a time machine Well, I think it will become apparent that they may have gleaned this material from the lost teachings of PFAL that were so calously dashed asunder on the cutting room floor. Don't mind me. I've been up for days shooting reds and yellows.
