Just the other day, my grandson, Cletus(that's his name) was whinnin' and carryin' on about how his new game thingy wouldn't let him get to the next level(whatever the heck that is).I looked him straight in the eye and said "Cletus(that's his name), when I was your age I lived in a commune and slept in a room about the size of your Aunt Minnies' outhouse. There was little else to eat except for birdseed which the city folks called millet and some strange stuff we called familia . I always thought that was a queer kind of name since it didn't look at all familia' to me. "Oh, Grandpa,said Cletus(that's his name),you tell the best fairy tales. How about tellin' that one about that guy who was King Of The World and could make stuff happen just by thinkin' about it?" Every time I see one of those TV specials where someone tears down an old wall and releases some poor spirit who has been trapped behind it for centuries, I become even more and more perplexed. After all, even Casper was able to pass through walls and he was one of the FREINDLY ones! Plus, he had his own TV show and theme song as well. I don't remember the numbers either but I seem to recall the sign originally said"xxxxxxSERVED".(not SOLD) I wouldn't swear to it. It just seems that way. We used to go there to hang out in the parking lot. The whole idea was to find a parking spot at the back of the lot and back in. ALWAYS back in. That way you had a clear view of whoever pulled in the lot. We parked 3 or 4 cars side by side and prepared ourselves for future rounds of "Name That Tune". You had to buy something to stay so hot chocolate was the #1 choice. It was cheap and because this was a wintertime activity it served a function of providing heat. Guys with "hot" cars used to drive around and around the parking lot in counterclockwise circles. We called them "piston heads." (A "head" was a person who was obsessed with something,later on it was specifically with drugs). We joked that their tires probably wore out twice as fast on the left side from driving around in circles. I wonder,too, if any of this would have happened if they had provided inside seating. All they had was a walk-up counter. It would be interesting to research whether tire sales figures dropped when they added inside dining.

Rascal-------You asked about a buffer zone where no unspiritual were allowed to dwell. I remember quite well and this was part of what I was referring to in my post n the "Impossible To--------" thread when I talked about people being tossed out in the middle of the night if they dared to question authority. This wasn't just a "don't come back to our little twig" kind of thing. This was "get hundreds of miles away before the sun comes up" type of thing. I think this is a face of "the way" that many people never even dreamed existed let alone were exposed to. Scriptural references? Yep. Lots of them were given at the time. There always seemed to be some kind of way to rationalize this type of thing but I suspect that to be true in any cult.

The Highway---------Re: VCR's in 1978. In the early 70's, TWI had video tape PLAYERS. They had no recording capability. They were quite large and bulky. I remember them quite well because ,in the course of shopping for a used car, one of the primary features the car had to have was a trunk large enough to easily transport the machine. I think I settled on a 1969 Mercury. Everything in those days was always viewed with the ministry as a crucial factor in decision making. (Is there enough trunk space for the VTP?, is this apartment big enough for fellowships?, will this job offer conflict with class scheduling? and on and on.) As to where the said video may have come from: A very prominent sports program director, Bud M*rgan, was associated with TWI in the early '70's. You may recall he was responsible for the "Rock Of Ages,'71" film that was used for public ex.'s. It is only speculation on my part but since he was part of the ABC production family at the time, he may have also played a part in this production being made available to VPW. Maybe ABC has it in their archive but it was common practise back then to record over previous shows to save money on production costs. Who knew anyone would be interested in it 40 years in the future?

motherof2----------I am probably the worst person in the world to try to help you find things here. There are people,however, who are expert at helping you navigate. The questions you have asked have definite answers and have been discussed at great length here including JCING. I know from experience that family relationships can have a big impact on decisions one makes. So much of this reminds me of the old "frog in a frying pan" analogy so many of us have heard. If you put a frog in a hot frying pan he will hop right out. If you put it in a pot of cool water it will swim around happily,oblivious to the fact that you are slowly raising the heat until it's much too late. We had a place called Royal Castle. They had tiny little burgers that were good for about 2 or 3 bites.You could buy them by the dozen if my memory serves me. They also featured a soft drink called Birch Beer which had a very distinctive flavor of its' own. They had gigantic cinamon rolls and freshly squeezed OJ. I don't remember the price of the burgers but it must have been about a dime each due to the small size.(This is not to be confused with White Castle which is a chain that is currently in business.)

Chatty-----There are a lot of theories on where slide guitar originated. Personally, I think it developed out of necessity. A lot of these guys who we listen to today( like Muddy Waters, Skip James, Booka White,Son House,etc.) were plantation workers by day. At the end of a long day, their hands and fingers had paid the price that hard work requires. Many times they would tune their guitars to an open chord. D was very common but it really doesn't matter. Some would take an old bottle with a straight neck and remove the neck. They would smooth out the edges and use that as a slide. (hence the term "bottleneck guitar") Some used butter knives and old metal sockets. Some used medicine bottles or lip stick tubes. There are no "rules". Most used the slide on their pinky finger because it maximized the use of their other fingers. Use of finger picks is a necessity.(especially if your fingers are already painfully sore from farm work) I have some videos of Muddy playing and the visual aspect adds a whole dimension of its' own. Homespuntapes.com has quite a few instructionals that are excellent. You can buy glass bottle necks already cut and smoothed. Plastic ones don't have a very good sound(imo). Remember! no rules. You find what works for you because that's how these guys stumbled on it in the first place. PS---------If you want an example of what it is NOT supposed to sound like, let me know!

Lots and lots of people questioned the scriptural accuracy of what was being taught and practised. In my opinion, it all boils down to what Lindyhopper cited. Once you bought into the lesson on how Eve was tricked and decided it wasn't going to happen to you, the ground was broken and the seed was sown for further indoctrination. This teaching was perhaps the most powerful segment of PFAL or any other class because it set the stage for allowing something bigger than yourself have the final say in the decisions and actions that followed. This segment holds the very essence of mind control and without it the rest of the class would have been like a Sunday School lesson. Now add to that the concept that revelation can change to meet the immediate situation. And before someone says "chapter and verse, please." rest assured there were many,many scriptures given to supposedly support that stance. Those two items in themselves explain a good deal of how controlling took place but now add these: 1)Leadership might be speaking what was given them by revelation 2)Disobedience to revelation spelled disaster(Lots of scriptures given on this one.) 3)The adversary was lying in wait to consume those who came into an understanding of "The Truth" and then reverted to their former ways 4)Disobedience to leadership was the same as being outside "The Hedge Of Protection" So,why didn't someone simply find scriptural evidence of "wrong-doing"? Because we were led to believe that doing so would be contrary to the spiritual insight we thought we were being shown.
