  1. "That's Riiiiigghhtt!!" Euphemistic translation: "'cause I said so!!-----so there! Or how about "Spiritually angry"? Means the same thing as'p!zzed off" except it's, uhmmm, "spiritual", dontcha know?
  2. Would it seem too imposing of me to ask for some sort of reference for this statement?
  3. As requested:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-MVOAeQ_1w
  4. I don't remember much about physics. (not sure why, it was only 40 years ago ) It seems to me, though, that the thread size is not relevant as it is the bolt head that presses the cylinder head tightly against the block. Seems to me that, no matter where on the under-surface of the bolt head you measured the pressure, the pressure would be the same, regardless of the diameter of the bolt head. Hey, now! go easy on me! When I studied this stuff, the wheel was still a modern marvel! How about some of our younger "science guys" like P-Mosh and Bolshevik?
  5. I still think it's designed to try to make us "old timers" feel nostalgic for "the good old days", the ladies in their schoolmarm garb(Dorothy and Rhoda), the men with their neck scarves(VP). And who can blame them? If you can't drum up any new customers, why not revisit previous ones? Car dealers do it on a regular basis. The problem with that strategy is that, anyone old enough to associate this with past memories is here at GreaseSpot, long since moved on or, well, "awaiting the return". Sorry, TWI, It does bring back memories but they are not all warm and fuzzy.
  6. I heard a song not too long ago by a guy named James Harmon. The song was called Piecework Politicians. "We need piecework politicians Working strictly on commission.-------" I like the song a lot so please don't misunderstand me, but maybe I should write a song and call it "Piecework Christians". When you work in a factory, the more pieces of product(fruit) you produce, the more pay you will earn. It can be a good concept, really,( if you don't try to extend it beyond the factory and into spiritual matters.) When my Mom used to teach twigs, she used to say that "God loves you for who you are, right here and now, not for what you could be sometime in the future and in spite of what you've done in the past." I guess you could find a scripture to support that statement if you wanted to. I don't personally feel the need to.
  7. I'm usually pretty much willing to cut some slack on appearance related matters such as " too fat, too skinny, last year's hairstyles" and so on. I try to see past that and focus on the message. What bugs me , though, is that (IMO) having the men wear these neck scarves, that have been out of style for 35+ years is clearly a blatant attempt to evoke a nostalgic response in people from the "Good Old Days". You younger folks are probably shaking your heads and thinking, "What the heck does that mean?" Well, you see, "Dr." Wierwille was quite fond of wearing these neck scarves (Usually with a Western cut shirt) So, seeing people wear them again is kind of like a "flashback" of sorts. I don't so much mind that they look ridiculously dated, what bothers me is having someone try to bait me with memories of something from the past . Then again, anyone who has read my early posts, especially in "my story", knows that an image of Wierwille wearing a neck scarf is not likely to induce any warm fuzzy memories for me, personally. ---------------------------- NY Unknown If you could, in fact, make chicken salad out of chicken $p!t, that would make one heck of a BIG sandwich!
  8. I just got done listening to this. It is quite enlightening. Thank you both. (Paw and John)

Rumrunner I had never heard of that movie so I googled it. It sounds like my kind of flick. According to what I read, it is based on a book called Rocket Boys. The article goes on to say that the title of the movie was changed to October Sky (which is an anagram for Rocket Boys) in an effort to appeal to a wider audience. I think I'm going to visit the local library and see if I can get a copy of both. Thanks for the suggestion.
  11. Hi, WG I don't know anything about this class or the individual you mentioned. I do think, however, I can somewhat understand how certain aspects of it can evoke an unforeseen response in you. It's an unsettling reaction and flash of emotions that really defy the logic of the circumstances at hand. It's pretty hard to put into words that are easily understood, though you seem to have done a pretty good job of that. I've learned to recognize it, somewhat, and make a conscious effort to control it. One thing that I found curiously interesting is that it did not have the same affect on Mr. Garden as it did on you even though all three of us spent time in the same "training program". Could it be somehow linked to events that took place the year after he graduated and you and I were still in the program? I suspect that , even though he was only a year ahead of us, the overall experience he had was a bit different. Maybe this is due in part to the changing of the "MOG" that you and I experienced but he did not. I really don't know. It's just a thought. I'll say this, though. If he(the pastor) calls you in the middle of the night and tells you to report to some remote location and you find yourself sitting in some darkened room with 50 people in complete silence--------GET HE HECK OUTTA THERE!

    Sputnik

October 4, 2007 will mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of Sputnik I by the USSR. Sputnik I was the very first artificial satellite. I still remember our whole neighborhood going outdoors at the same time to marvel at the tiny speck as it made its way across the evening sky. Oh, sure, there will be those who will say I'm just bitter and hanging on to the past. There will be those who say I need to just get over it and move on, but-------------- OOPS! I was saving that part for another post. Anybody else remember it? (Sputnik, that is.)
  14. Just to clarify, JL, you are referring to "recreational" use of the internet, correct? The company I work for has an "intranet" that we use to do most of our business activity including ordering of product, company announcements, technical information, employee handbook and even our daily timesheets. We could not function without it. And now, even paper airline tickets are going the same route as the dinosaur. It only seems natural to seek some recreational diversion where you are forced to spend a good deal of time, anyway. Still, I do see your point about letting things get out of balance. I guess Grandpaw was right when he said "Too much of a good thing is bad." Oops. Gotta go. I really need to answer this IM I just got. edited to add: The general perception of the Amish lifestyle has been distorted by the media and entertainment industry. Many do, in fact, use electricity which they generate themselves. They are not keen on depending on the government supplying their needs. Though they do not have phones in their homes, it is not unusual to see a payphone booth in the heart of Amish country. It is also becoming increasingly more common to see computers in their homes, which they use primarily for business purposes.(Though the youngsters do use them to play video games) (These observations are based on personal experience.)

HOWIE You probably don't remember me, but I remember you. If I had to make a list of the "good guys" from back in the day, you would be way up at the top of my list. It's very nice to "see" you. Waysider.(FL4)
  17. Jim In Fellowlaborers, our personal time was extremely limited. Our day started at 5AM and ended at midnight. After midnight, it was "lights out" and no talking was permitted. We had no phones or TVs. Our only real connection to the outside world was the time we spent at our secular jobs which was supposed to be focused on witnessing to co-workers and promoting the ministry. Also, there was the car radio as you went to and from the complex to work.(mostly AM back then) The apartment complex was set in a rural area. There was not much development nearby and it was forbidden to leave the complex and go into the city without special dispensation. There was, however, a truck stop about a half mile away, on a state route, that had a pay phone. (Everything was long distance) They sold cigs. and coffee and twinkies and so on. There was usually about a 20 or 30 minute stretch of time between night twig and lights out. During that time, some of us would walk together in the darkness to the truck stop under the pretense of going for smokes or coffee. We called them "junk runs". It was during these "junk runs" that we would discuss matters such as those you described. There was no one to listen in as you walked down that dark back road. Of course, you were careful not to make a "junk run" with just "any old body". The name of the truck stop was Wayside Truck Stop. That is why I call myself Waysider.( not THE Waysider, just A Waysider.) Of course, even though many things were discussed, it was not at all obvious that what we were seeing was part of a much larger picture. We thought it was isolated to our program and perhaps to some of the smaller areas from which the program drew participants. I think, in a technical sense, you might consider yourself to be a "waysider" of sorts, also.
  18. I take it you haven't reviewed an Advanced Class syllabus lately. Does it qualify as "written teaching"? You might just want to put the sections on devil spirits to the accuracy "litmus test" before you declare it to be pure. Yes, PB, I do understand the gist of what you are saying about having to " bite your tongue." Having to do that and confer with each other in secret, lest we be castigated, is, in part, where my handle "Waysider" comes from. I am not THE Waysider, I am one of MANY Waysiders. We(Waysiders) knew we had to speak in private because we saw what happened to those who dared to express concerns that all was not right in the Fellowlaborers program. We had no idea, though, how wide in scope the problematic concerns were. We thought it was isolated to our little program. A couple years after we graduated from the program, one of the guys, who had returned to his home town, spoke out about what he had seen. Within hours, he had "thugs" at his front door giving him some very stern warnings to keep his opinions to himself. No, I'm not going to "document" it. I really don't care if anyone believes it or not. I know what happened and that's good enough for me.

    Deja vu

Sorry T-Bone What I meant was "roux" which is pronounced "rue". It's a sauce that's made out of wheat flour and butter. (I could be wrong about that part.I don't make it. I just eat it.) Anyway, you don't eat roux by itself, you make it first and then you add it to some other dish (such as gumbo) Hence the statement, Deja Roux "Didn't I cook this once before?" I should have put this on the cooking thread. Hmmmmm! That's strange, I feel like I already did!
  21. Ya knowI look at some of these old photos that are posted from time to time thinking that surely I will recognize someone.I(almost) never do.It's then that I begin to realize how much bigger this "Wacky Way Thing" was than I ever really knew.I don't know why that thought struck me but strike me it did.Still, seeing the hairstyles and clothing fashions manages to stir up feelings of nostalgia. It all reminds me of this song:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep7uySNpUyw

    The Big event

Well, in my neck of the woods, there are actually quite a few white squirrels. A hundred miles north, there is an abundance of black squirrels. No joke, They are really both just variations of the Grey's squirrel. I have yet to hear of anywhere in between that can boast a population of rainbow coalition squirrels but, HEY!, who knows for sure?
  23. Roses I know this ain't the prayer thread but I'm gonna pray for you anyhow. And you can't stop me! ^_^
