I was thinking something more like this: Carny — Someone who works in a carnival. The term is also applied to the carnival itself. This by way of Todd Robbins: "As Chris Christ put it, 'Ward [Hall] and I are showmen. Don't call us carnies. Carnies are junky ride jockeys that are here today and gone tomorrow. The difference between a carny and a showman is the difference between chicken dang and chicken salad!' And as someone who has tried at times to emulate them, I [ed.] can tell you that there is a vast difference between framing an attraction and being showman enough to present it effectively to the public.

CHOMP!! You got it. Even though the correct title is, indeed, Polk Salad Annie, it should really be Poke Sallet Annie. Poke is a type of wild greens. When you cook greens they are no longer called salad, they are called sallet. YER NEXT!!!

Sorry! Here's an easy one to make up for it. When the truth is found to be lies and all the joy within you dies -

Hmmmmm. I had a dog once who [how shall I say this?] was quite fond of my leg. Now I guess I have to wonder how that fits with all this other stuff. (And just when I thought I was starting to understand it all.) [:-[

Poor JeffSjo. He seems to be taking the splat rap for something that was actually posted by me, not him. A musical apology to all. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_5fmGwMFl4

I enjoyed that, Phil. It reminded me how, as a young man, I spent many a dismal, rainsoaked Saturday lost in the pages of Theodore Sturgeon, Isaac Asimov and Aldous Huxley.

Holy guacamole! Nixon was still in his first term and the U.S. was still three years away from pulling out of Viet Nam when I was sitting in that class. How did I get so old?

Hey there, coolchef "Spin" is when you take a pig and dress it up in a fancy evening gown. It might look better but it's still a pig. Politicians are known to have people on their staffs that put a "spin" on negative publicity involving their candidates. They do this by misrepresenting facts, omitting facts, using facts in a deliberately selective manner(that's called "cherry picking") or simply giving something a more appealing name. Here's a couple simple examples: 1.I ask a garbage man what he does for a living and he tells me he is a "sanitary engineer". 2.Someone asks me if The Way is a cult and I reply that it is a "Biblical research and teaching ministry". 3.We weren't brainwashed, we "cleansed our minds with the integrity of The Word". Any clearer now?

And lest it fades from memory, the steam car was once more popular than the gas powered models. (Henry Ford put an end to that.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steam_car ps--I had a great-uncle who worked for White Motors.
