  1. Arsenic poisoning is, indeed, an interesting parallel. If I remember correctly, the currently acceptable level for arsenic content in drinking water is 10 parts per BILLION. ( I think that figure may have been revised recently to an even lower level.) The important thing to remember regarding arsenic is that it has a residual effect. Once you ingest it, it stays in your body and accumulates unless specific medical measures are taken to remove it. That's the concept the two little old ladies used to poison their victims in Arsenic And Old Lace. On an interesting side note, prior to the introduction of penicillin after WWII, arsenic was thought to be a viable treatment for syphilis, a sexually transmitted disease which, if left unchecked, can express itself in latter stages as dementia, delusions of grandieur, irrational behavior and tumors throughout the body.

    Happy Birthday

    Happy Birthday, dande, railroader, etc.
  3. For what it's worth, Mr. P., I dig where you're comin' from on this. Sometimes saying nothing at all seems better than saying it to the wrong person. Hey! Wanna run down to the truck stop with me? I hear they're having a big sale on Moon Pies!
  4. No one said this is a "closed thread". I simply stated that, as I see it, the purpose of this thread is to allow people to express how they feel about having been exploited. There is nothing in what I said that implies you can't voice an opposing opinion. What I object to is the derailment of the topic at hand. It's simply inappropriate to "discuss the discussion" or "promote an agenda" that conflicts with the purpose of this thread. You are perfectly welcome (IMO) to state an opposing view as long as you don't do so in a manner that is disruptive of the stated intent of the thread. So, on that note, I suggest you start a thread that presents an opposing view and moderate it yourself. Or, like the old saying goes: "Poop or get off the potty chair."
  5. It's my impression that this thread was started as an opportunity for people to discuss how it feels to realize they were exploited. If you don't feel you were exploited, then so be it. Go ahead and say so. It's not my intention to change your perception. Then----- politely step aside and let others have a voice without having to be challenged and doubted at every turn.
  6. I'll be sure to remind my buddy the next time I visit his grave.

  8. The cancer had already "metastasized". Simply stated, that means it had spread from the initial site(the eye) and invaded other organs (the liver). Perhaps you have seen some of the youtube posts here of Eva Cassidy. She too fell victim to metastasized melanoma that may have been a result of the extensive time she spent working outdoors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUwTdqPkluY
  9. WOW burgers! Yikes. Just makes me stop and think about how everything we did and said and thought was centered around selling that stupid class. Sigh
  10. He's everywhere! He's everywhere! ( not a song but radio related)
  11. Those are the types of things that would have been recorded in the patient's "jacket" but guarded by an oath of confidentiality.
  12. So then, the whole eye and liver thing could possibly be a red herring?
  13. Here's one from my "homeboy".
  14. Generally speaking, there are four ways the body will heal itself from injury. The first type is called primary healing. In this type of healing, a damaged cell is replaced with an exact duplicate. Superficial damage to the outer layer of the corner (there are 5 total) takes place in this manner. This is the kind of injury that contact lens wearers experience when they have abrasions. It is also the type that happens in response to flashburn. There is no scarring or evidence left in its wake.("Welders Cataracts" are not a form of healing per se, but merely a response to interrupted metabolic processes.) The second type is called, of course, secondary healing. This is the kind you experience when you do something like cut your finger on a sharp piece of glass. The cells that replace the damaged ones are quite functional but are not duplicates of the originals. The result is what we call a scar. The third type is called tertiary. Some people, such as myself, experience this as a result of surgical incision. In this type of healing, not only does a scar form, but extra tissue, called keloid, develops at the site as well. It's like a scar "on steroids". They itch like the dickens from time to time. The fourth type, called quaternary, is the result of traumatized tissue being replaced with cancerous tissue. There is no way of determining whether his cancer was related to the insults from bright lights without first having knowledge of the specific location of the cancer's origin. The eye is a mighty complex place. Stating that "the cancer was in the eye" is simply not specific enough to draw conclusions. It would seem unlikely though that the cancer was a response to trauma if, in fact, it originated in a region not associated with the original insults.

  16. I'm not sure it's possible to compare divorce in Biblical times to divorce today. Our culture is so radically different from theirs, the parallels are not easy to discern.
  17. Dave While I see your point about homogenization, I find I really can't agree. On the small work crew, of which I am a part, we have people from Ghana, Niger, Somalia, Tanzania, Ivory Coast and Mexico. They all speak multiple languages. One person actually speaks 8 languages quite fluently. America is truly a "melting pot". The fact that cults tend to dress alike and use selective phrases to exclude themselves from the masses is a byproduct not a defining component. Charismatic leadership, insight into some privileged knowledge, obsession with the group and its activities, exclusion of outsiders, etc. is more what one tends to think of when defining a cult.
  18. Yeah, I see what you are saying, Spoudazo but what I really want to understand is what sort of specific activities did VP and LCM consider "standing in the gap"? I mean, did they think trying to operate the magic "law" of believing defined it? Did they involve themselves in some sort of fasting or prayer vigil? What physical or mental activities would be considered "standing in the gap"? If you disregard the Jesus connection for a moment, it really appears that this was just another silly catch phrase that had no real meaning (Like "It's The Word, The Word, and nothing but The Word!".)
  19. I can understand how long term exposure to UV can contribute to cancer but this is garden variety flashburn, for gosh sakes. And, it wasn't long term. It was for a couple weeks or so. I don't doubt that he may have experienced discomfort from corneal burns or even that his exposure might have accelerated potential cataract development, but cancer from a couple weeks in a film studio? I ain't buying it.
  20. Exactly what was it they were doing that they called "standing in the gap"?
  21. Ya see, I have this "friend" who has a problem--------
