So, if your donation is tax deductible, is it still classified as "abundant sharing" Way back when I was involved with The Way (eons ago), it was encouraged and there were forms that twig leaders had to fill out so people could deduct their ABS. Unfortunately, most of us didn't make enough to file the long form so it was a moot point. I have no idea what that has to do with puns but it is rather humorous in retrospect.

Dispensationalism was born out of the mind of John Nelson Darby. He needed to find a way to make his concept of the secret rapture fit with the scriptures. "If one accepted Darby's view of the secret rapture... Benjamin Wills Newton pointed out, then many Gospel passages must be "renounced as not properly ours."...this is precisely what Darby was prepared to do. Too traditional to admit that biblical authors might have contradicted each other, and too rationalist to admit that the prophetic maze defied penetration, Darby attempted a resolution of his exegetical dilemma by distinguishing between Scripture intended for the Church and Scripture intended for Israel... The task of the expositor of the Bible was, in a phrase that became the hallmark of dispensationalism, "rightly dividing the word of truth". From "The Roots of Fundamentalism: British and American Millenarianism 1800-1930" (1970) by Ernest R. Sandeen, University of Chicago Press ISBN 978-0-226-73467-5, p. 65-67" Short answer: No, they don't exist in the Bible.

Does it BOTHER you that your neighbor beilieves in a Trinity?
waysider replied to Ham's topic in About The Way
I think some people are bothered by this sort of thing because we, as human type creatures, have an innate desire to be the one who is "right". (But I could be wrong.) :B) -
Yeah, we were the poster children of compassion.

Not just the jokes, themselves, but the compulsion to interject unwarranted humor into situations that most people would not consider humorous. It can make you appear to be callous and flippant though that's not your intention at all. Is this a byproduct of time spent in The Way? I don't know. It does seem to be much more prevalent in ex-Waysters than in the general populace though. Just an observation.

Maybe the safest place for us is on the ball.

Are You More Moral Than Yahweh?
waysider replied to Raf's topic in Atheism, nontheism, skepticism: Questioning Faith
HERE is an interesting article that looks at some issues of morality from a Buddhist influenced perspective . -

The Way HQ property has been sold to Six Flags Amusements. Their plan is to demolish the World Over The World Auditorium, decommission The Fountain Of Living Waters memorial and build the worlds' largest ostrich petting zoo and parakeet display. The Way Woods, likewise, will be reconfigured to accommodate a large scale petunia garden/gift shop. Happy April 1st!

:offtopic:/> waysider, I love those lemon filled donuts covered with powdered sugar. You mean PÄ…czki? You're a bit late. Those are the specialty on Fat Tuesday. Edit: How come there isn't an off-topic emoticon with a smile on its face?

Stick around, MRAP. We can get a bit salty at times but we mean you know harm. Have a jelly doughnut. It's on the house.

Working The Word: A methodology for studying the Bible that involves examining it for minutia and nuances that may or may not have been lost, added or misunderstood in the ongoing process of translation, with a view toward incorporating said findings into one's value system and personal behavior. The Outsider Test for Faith
waysider replied to Raf's topic in Atheism, nontheism, skepticism: Questioning Faith
People believe all sorts of things for all sorts of reasons. To each his own and all that jazz. Where it becomes a problem, though, is when those beliefs begin to adversely affect the way we behave and function in society. Say, for example, I chose to believe in Santa Claus. A bit wacky for a grown man but who is it hurting? So Christmas morning arrives and my little ones are standing in front of the Christmas tree, not a present in sight. Sure, they're disappointed. So am I. I was really counting on the jolly old guy to come through for me. At least I can count on The Tooth Fairy. When we lived in the various in-residence programs, we believed we were replicating life in the first century. It didn't really occur to us that we were just living in communes, entertaining a lifestyle that didn't resemble first century life in any way shape or form. It wasn't our beliefs involving the 4 crucified or the cry of triumph teaching that had such a negative impact on us, it was the isolationism, twisted hierarchy of authority and bully-governed lifestyle that defined our daily existence. It wasn't what theology we believed, it was how we lived that did the damage. -
Oh, I don't know. Zoom in for a close up of grown adults chanting Little Bunny Foo Foo whilst pouring Fig Pep on their familia and you've got yourself the makings of a real thriller.

Dispensationalism
waysider replied to Tzaia's topic in Atheism, nontheism, skepticism: Questioning Faith
For Wierwille, it wasn't about trying to understand difficult scripture. It was about finding loopholes that would allow him to live the life he chose. He was fond of saying, "Do what you like as long as you like what you do." Having an Age of Grace to defer to made that possible. Without Dispensationalism, The Age of Grace does not exist. -
Dispensationalism
waysider replied to Tzaia's topic in Atheism, nontheism, skepticism: Questioning Faith
Acceptance of Dispensationalism is crucial to understanding Way Theology. That's why it's hammered into place in PLAF (The Wonder Class), session#5. Wierwille, of course, renamed it and called it Administrations. John Darby created the concept in an effort to rationalize the incongruency of the Bible. -
The trip to India when he supposedly healed the man from the back of a train and was subsequently given the keys to the city. Oh, we had fun examining that one for veracity. (Taken straight out of the Gospel of Mark.) No basis for truth was ever found regarding this incident in India.

Yet ANOTHER Thread on Speaking in Tongues
waysider replied to Steve Lortz's topic in Doctrinal: Exploring the Bible
I guess I don't understand, Mark. How can the tongues be a sign of ANYTHING if they are simply a foreign language the hearer does not understand. That happens on the subway all the time. I don't think anyone on the subway considers it a sign. -
There was a thread here a few years ago about some of the wild claims he made, such as the black snow storm, snow on the gas pumps, burning snow, God talking to him, his basketball career, etc. Among the most memorable was the one where he claimed to have a doctorate. (You do know he wasn't really a Dr., don't you?)

Yet ANOTHER Thread on Speaking in Tongues
waysider replied to Steve Lortz's topic in Doctrinal: Exploring the Bible
" SIT does not lead folks to GOD, it's God's means to commo with his off-spring." Well, that's not what the scripture says in I Corinthians 14:22 (Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not...) -
You know he invented the hook shot, right? (I know he did 'cause he said so.) :biglaugh:/> You would think the Sheboygan Redskins could at least have included him on their official roster. Shame on them!
