More nonsense! + = Our greatest freedom is the ability to choose a response! Freedom of the mind requires not only, or not even specially, the absence of legal constraints but the presence of alternative thoughts. The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities..... Allan Bloom... The Closing of the American Mind

What the hell are you talking about?!?! If one can NUDGE a robot that is considered remote control. What a stupid metaphor! Now you have a mishmash of mixed up metaphors: installing software into gears, levers, fluids, bones, etc…I guess you are talking about programs and other operating information used by a computer – software as opposed to hardware… and you assume love – which is to be brief, an intense feeling of deep affection, a great interest and pleasure in something, feeling a deep affection for someone or something – can be reduced to a series of coded software instructions to control the operation of a computer or other machine….yeeech ! there is NOTHING – NOTHING - NOTHING “genuinely special” about that...this love is not genuine - nor special - it's preprogrammed

Please specify the issue…there’s more than one problem being addressed right now I think it's real I have multiple answers to that. I believe free will is part of our cognitive abilities that has a supernatural origin – we were created in the image and likeness of God. I also believe humankind never lost the image and likeness of God – although according to Scripture that image and likeness is tarnished – i.e., damaged – our sinful nature. I believe free will is a capability everyone has and for the Christian it means choosing the options mentioned in passages like Romans 7 and Romans 8 to deal effectively / productively with our sinful nature. You’re repeating yourself – please reread my above answers

> Your answer still implies there’s an external force/influence OUTSIDE BOTH PATTERNS of determinism that is the agency to do the replacing or operating the lever. > Please don’t include me when you say “The pattern of determinism that WE find acceptable” – which suggests I have agreed to the dubious intellectual standards that you hold to I’ve followed this thread and have read your chapters…maybe your happy JUST BECAUSE you’re getting some attention – AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH A RE-WRITE OR REVISING FOR CLARITY OR CORRECTING THE CONTRADICTIONS…It seems to me YOUR SIDE of the discussion is more representative of a person who wants the thread to be about YOURSELF than anything that even remotely resembles the Socratic method of getting to the essentials of a topic... think I can count on you to be quintessentially off-topic. I have refrained from asking a lot of questions because of the unsatisfactory manner in which you respond to pointed questions – you flat out don’t – and usually respond with more nonsense that does not answer the question – or you dodge, ignore, etc., Instead YOU act the part of a troll to get waaaaaaay off-topic, refuse to acknowledge anecdotal evidence presented by posters, being dismissive and condescending, and respond in ways that suggest you are oblivious to the logic and valid points Grease Spotters have raised to rebut your “theories

I recognize that scene - Shonta-juice is explaining the greatness of PFAL to the guy on the right - who is now experiencing a sharp decrease in his cognitive abilities.

Upon further analysis, just wanted to point out Johniam’s old post (May 3rd 2007 ! ) performs multi-duty: Criticize those who’s conscience was victimized by wierwille’s hypocritical ideology; this is a typical strategy of abusers and those who come to the defense of abusers to blame the victim. This is the classic unrepentant sinful cult-leader’s rule - the old Isaiah 5:20 switcheroo call evil good and good evil – “no condemnation” of wierwille’s licentious behavior the tu quoque or “you too” fallacy - this might work if Johniam were addressing a convention of serial rapists. But he’s addressing Grease Spotters – some of which may have been victims of his sexual predation and/or had their inner voice sabotaged – silencing one’s personal guide in rightness or wrongness of one's behavior A habit pattern does not indicate motive. There are good habits and bad habits. It seems people like Mike and Johniam have gotten into a bad habit of defending to the hilt a plagiarizing, pathological liar, money-grubbing thief and sexual predator and his con game of PFAL. This is an attempt to gaslight Grease Spotters - manipulate by psychological means into questioning their own sanity, analytical skills, decision-making ability, reality, etc. It is very telling that Mike would give a “bravo” to Johniam’s post… …Mike had to go waaaaaaaay back to a May 3rd 2007 post to bump this thread up for attention – the reason he says is it’s so closely aligned with the free will versus determinism thread – which I rebutted in a previous post - here - and is nothing more than a blatant attempt to act the part of a troll on this thread too.

Sounds like a plan! I’d love to explore the duality of Jesus Christ and how that relates to the functionality of His various roles. And I also anticipate with keen interest delving into addressing some issues - assuming there is a Trinity. Don’t think anyone is going to reinvent the wheel – but it would be fun to have Grease Spotters asking some age-old questions like: what is the purpose of the Trinity ? how does the Trinity work together ?
-
As far as tackling the Trinity doctrine – I’ve been doing that for some 36 years now since I left…just to give opposing views an easy target I usually say I’m a Trinitarian now – but a lot of my beliefs are in a state of flux since I left which means I have a lot of wiggle room…looking into verses that suggest the divinity of Christ is one way to unpack the idea of Christ’s identity… ...I don’t see anything in the Bible forbidding me to believe Jesus Christ is divine – as part of the Trinity. I don’t see Him as one and the same as the Father or the Holy Spirit…but there’s no denying there are ample Scripture that indicates in some way all 3 are interconnected – even though how it works is inexplicable to our finite minds. This is a lifelong study project of mine. I love the challenge – not to be able to explain it…but to learn more and more how…somehow…The Father, Jesus Christ and The Holy Spirit work together.

I think it may have been in wierwille’s twisted imagination that I Corinthians 12:3 was the trump card to win the argument that it was God’s will that every Christian speak in tongues as an undeniable proof that they are going to heaven and all hell can’t stop them from going. To be fair – I can see how one might understand the passage that way: King James Bible Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. However, a case could also be made that wierwille had confirmation bias – from the alternative viewpoints I will present below. I red bolded the preposition “by” in the above KJV. In the Greek text “by” is the word “en”. See Bible Hub.com/interlinear 1 Corinthians 12-3 Concerning the Greek word “en”: “en”: in, on, at, by, with 1722 en (a preposition) – properly, in (inside, within); (figuratively) "in the realm (sphere) of," as in the condition (state) in which something operates from the inside (within). From: Bible Hub: Greek "en" Strong's # 1722 ~ ~ ~ ~ Now look at some alternate translations from Bible Hub: 1 Corinthians 12:3 : English Standard Version Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Berean Literal Bible Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking in the Spirit of God says, "Jesus is accursed," and no one is able to say, "Jesus is Lord," if not in the Holy Spirit. Amplified Bible Therefore I want you to know that no one speaking by the [power and influence of the] Spirit of God can say, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is [my] Lord,” except by [the power and influence of] the Holy Spirit. Young's Literal Translation wherefore, I give you to understand that no one, in the Spirit of God speaking, saith Jesus is anathema, and no one is able to say Jesus is Lord, except in the Holy Spirit. Contemporary English Version Now I want you to know that if you are led by God's Spirit, you will say that Jesus is Lord, and you will never curse Jesus. Good News Translation I want you to know that no one who is led by God's Spirit can say "A curse on Jesus!" and no one can confess "Jesus is Lord," without being guided by the Holy Spirit. The above translations seem to suggest a Christian should be influenced by the Holy Spirit. And further – Barnes’ Notes on I Cor, 12:3, also observes the passage is in reference to religious practices in general and that it should be inspired by The Holy Spirit – that would cover a wider range of spiritual methods than just speaking in tongues: Beginning excerpts from Barnes’ Notes: Wherefore I give you to understand - I make known to you. The force of this expression is, "I give you this rule to distinguish," or by which you may know what influences and operations are from God. The design of the passage is, to give them some simple general guide by which they could at once recognize the operations of the Spirit of God, and determine whether they who claimed to be under that operation were really so. That rule was, that all who were truly influenced by the Holy Spirit would be disposed to acknowledge and to know Jesus Christ; and where this disposition existed, it was of itself a clear demonstration that it was the operation of the Spirit of God. The same rule substantially is given by John 1 John 4:2, by which to test the nature of the spirit by which people profess to be influenced. "Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God," compare also the note to Matthew 16:17. That no man - No one οἰδεὶς oideis. It may refer to a man, or to demons, or to those who pretended to be under inspiration of any kind. And it may refer to the Jews who may have pretended to be under the influence of God's Spirit. and who yet anathematized and cursed the name of Jesus. Or it may be intended simply as a general rule; meaning that "if anyone," whoever he might be, should blaspheme the name of Jesus, whatever were his pretensions, whether professing to be under the influence of the Holy Spirit among the Jews, or to be inspired among the Gentiles, it was full proof that he was an impostor. The argument is, that the Holy Spirit in all instances would do honor to Jesus Christ, and would prompt all who were under his influence to love and reverence his name. Speaking by the Spirit of God - Under the influence of inspiration. Calleth - Says, or would say; that is, no such one would use the language of anathema in regard to him. Accursed - Margin, "Anathema" (ἀνάθημα anathēma); see the Acts 23:14 note; Romans 9:3 note; compare 1 Corinthians 16:22; Galatians 1:8-9. The word is one of execration, or cursing; and means, that no one under the influence of the Holy Spirit could curse the name of Jesus, or denounce him as execrable and as an impostor. The effect of the influences of the Spirit would be in all instances to inspire reverence for his name and work. It is probable that the Jews were here principally intended, since there is a bitterness and severity in the language which accords with all their expressions of feeling toward Jesus of Nazareth. It is possible, also, and indeed probable, that the priests and priestesses of the pagan gods who pretended to be under the influence of inspiration might denounce the name of Jesus, because they would all be opposed to the purity of his religion. And that no man can say ... - That is, that it cannot occur, or even happen, that anyone will acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah who is not influenced by the Holy Spirit. The meaning is, not that no one has physical ability to say that Jesus is Lord unless aided by the Holy Spirit, since all people can say this; but that no one will be disposed heartily to say it; no one will acknowledge him as their Lord; it can never happen that anyone will confess him as the true Messiah who has not been brought to this state by the agency of the Holy Spirit. Is the Lord - Is the Messiah; or shall acknowledge him as their Lord. But by the Holy Ghost - Unless he is influenced by the Holy Spirit. This is a very important verse, not only in regard to the particular subject under consideration in the time of Paul, but also in its practical bearing at present. We may learn from it: (1) That it is a proof that any man is under the influence of the Holy Spirit who is heartily disposed to honor the name and work of Jesus Christ. (2) those forms and modes of religion; those religious opinions and practices, will be most in accordance with the designs of the Spirit of God, which do most to honor the name and work of Jesus Christ. (3) it is true that no man will ever cherish a proper regard for Jesus Christ, nor love his name and work, unless he is influenced by the Holy Spirit. No man loves the name and work of the Redeemer by following simply the inclinations of his own corrupt heart. In all instances of those who have been brought to a willingness to honor him, it has been by the agency of the Holy Spirit. (4) if any man, in any way, is disposed to disparage the work of Christ, to speak lightly of his person or his name; or holds doctrines that infringe on the fulness of the truth respecting his divine nature, his purity, his atonement, it is proof that he is not under the influence of the Spirit of God. Just in proportion as he shall disparage that work or name, just in that proportion does he give evidence that he is not influenced by the Divine Spirit; but by proud reason, or by imagination, or by a heart that is not reconciled to God. (5) all true religion is the production of the Holy Spirit. For religion consists essentially in a willingness to honor, and love, and serve the Lord Jesus Christ; and where that exists, it is produced by the Holy Spirit. (6) the influence of the Holy Spirit should be cherished. To grieve away that Spirit is to drive all proper knowledge of the Redeemer from the soul; to do this is to leave the heart to coldness, and darkness, and barrenness, and spiritual death. From: Bible Hub: commentaries I Corinthians 12:3 End of excerpts ~ ~ ~ ~ Even modern theologians mention the possibility of a wider application of I Cor. 12:3 The validity of any speaking exercise is determined by the truthfulness of it. If the speaker affirms the lordship of Jesus, it is the truth from the Holy Spirit. What a person believes and says about Jesus Christ is the test of whether he speaks from the Holy Spirit. He always leads people to Christ’s lordship (cf. 2:8-14; Jn 15:26; I Jn 5:6-8) From page 1715, comments on I Cor. 12:3 of The Macarthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible A key point I gather from MacArthur’s comments is that what is said must be understood by the listener. So, it could cover tongues with interpretation, prophesy but it could also apply to anything said in a religious service – prayers in one’s understanding, songs, teaching and preaching.

That’s odd – YOU believe PFAL is God-breathed YOU believe wierwille’s claim that God would teach him “The Word” like it hasn’t been known since the 1st century YOU believe it’s okay for wierwille to have unabashedly plagiarized the work of others YOU believe wierwille was a good person for teaching the PFAL class – even though it was plagiarized material YOU believe it was okay for wierwille to sexually assault women just because he’s wierwille and gets a free pass. And yet as impossible as it might sound - me owning a book by Daniel Dennett and being able to follow along with him - you find that hard to believe? Well, that’s just great Mike – I can see you’re a person who has intellectual standards that must be met. Well… don’t hold your breath I’m sure YOU would be VERY happy to get someone to respond to you acting like a troll But I realized on the NT canon thread - Here it’s pointless to try and communicate with you ON ANYTHING Rather than summarize anything, I will just copy and paste someone's earlier post that encapsulated what a troll does: Signs Someone Is Trolling It can sometimes become difficult to tell the difference between a troll and someone who just genuinely wants to argue about a topic. However, here are a few tell-tale signs that someone is actively trolling. Off-topic remarks: Completely going off-topic from the subject at hand. This is done to annoy and disrupt other posters. Refusal to acknowledge evidence: Even when presented with hard, cold facts, they ignore this and pretend like they never saw it. Dismissive, condescending tone: An early indicator of a troll was that they would ask an angry responder, “Why you mad, bro?” This is a method done to provoke someone even more, as a way of dismissing their argument altogether. Use of unrelated images or memes: They reply to others with memes, images, and gifs. This is especially true if done in response to a very long text post. Seeming obliviousness: They seem oblivious that most people are in disagreement with them. Also, trolls rarely get mad or provoked. The list above is by no means definitive. There are a lot of other ways to identify that someone is trolling. Generally, if someone seems disingenuous, uninterested in a real discussion, and provocative on purpose, they’re likely an internet troll.

This is cross-referencing WPFALS #62 (Why PFAL Sucks reason # 62), WPFALS # 103 (Why PFAL sucks reason # 103) and The Absent Christ thread…or CR: WPFALS62-WPFALS103-TAC for short. This can be found in the imaginary cross-referencing section of Why PFAL sucks – and is listed as follows: CR: WPFALS62-WPFALS103-TAC: The emptiness some (like me) felt. Apart from a personal relationship with Christ – the Christian lifestyle is meaningless. Charles Brewster "Charley" Ross (born May 4, 1870 – disappeared July 1, 1874) was the primary victim of the first American kidnapping for ransom to receive widespread media coverage. His fate remains unknown, and his case is one of the most famous disappearances in U.S. history. From: Kidnapping of Charley Ross …in a manner of speaking – for me- a personal relationship with Christ was abducted by wierwille in his teaching of “The Word takes the place of the absent Christ.” Maybe this is a nefarious twist of the bait-and-switch scam. In PFAL, Jesus Christ is like the window-dressing of a shady pseudo-Christian store. If you think about what’s pushed in TWI – it’s not a Christ-centered ministry nor is the theology Christ-centered. It’s all about a wierwille-centered ministry and a wierwille-centered theology… reflecting on my 12 years with TWI, it was a missing-persons case. Jesus Christ was missing from my life. And wierwille and upper leadership would string me along – with claims that taking the next class, working PFAL material, making PFAL my own would satisfy my spiritual needs. It’s almost like they showed me a picture of Jesus Christ in the stores display window – if you ever want to see your Jesus alive, you better pay the ransom – which was the cost of the classes, the commitment to the programs, abundant sharing 15% or more, allegiance to the cult-leader, etc. So, rest assured Jesus Christ was NOT literally kidnapped…and not that all students fell prey to all of wierwille’s erroneous doctrines – but for some like myself, there was no feeling I should connect with a person – since I was led to believe the person was not here. That’s the kicker about teaching scenarios. Having a good teacher with the best of intentions does not guarantee every student will correctly understand the object lesson. On page 395 of THE BIBLE READER'S COMPANION Your Guide to Every Chapter of the Bible by Lawrence O. Richards the author expands on the gloomy theme of Ecclesiastes: This pessimistic tone seems out of place in the Bible, a book which is vibrant with hope. But its role in Scripture can be understood when we grasp the nature of Qoheleth’s study. [fyi “Qoheleth”, a Hebrew word meaning “preacher,” “teacher,” or “a collector of sayings,” appears in the first verse of the book of Ecclesiastes…T-Bone ] He limits his search for life’s meaning to data gained by the senses within the material universe alone. This is refelceted in the phrase “under the sun,” which occurs 29 times in the book. He also relies only on the power of human reason, stating seven times that he “communed with my own heart.” In essence, the writer consciously ignored special revelation to find out if life holds any meaning apart from insights provided by God. Given this framework, the book makes an important contribution. It resonates with the emptiness we all feel when alienated from God and demonstrates that apart from a personal relationship with Him, life is meaningless indeed. End of excerpt ~ ~ ~ ~ Let me add another tidbit for those unfamiliar with the theological terms of general revelation and special revelation. General revelation is available to everyone, anywhere in the world and can be seen as God revealing himself in the world around us. In contrast, special revelation includes miracles, prophets, and special messages received from God. Special revelation show God’s revelation of himself through the Bible and Jesus Christ. From: 123 Help Me: general revelation vs special revelation See also: Wikipedia: general revelation Wikipedia: special revelation ~ ~ ~ ~ It wasn’t until after I left TWI – a couple of years later that a coworker befriended me over our common interest in Bible study. Bible-knowledge-wise, I guess we were probably more or less equal. But there was something about him that was more…vibrant? He seemed to have a more experiential depth of Bible-knowledge. As our relationship grew – I opened up about my involvement with a cult and even got into doctrines I knew would be thorny issues (at the time, I still did not re-explore JCING vs The Trinity). He was great! Helped me get over the stigma of surviving a cult. He was not judgmental. And he did a very wise thing – we never discussed aberrant doctrines – instead he went to the heart of my problem – I had never developed a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. For months after that I was walking around with the enthusiasm of a new convert. I knew that would wear off – but having figured out the broken connection set me in a new direction. This is still an ongoing project – it’s like having a fixer-upper house. Some things that are still valid – I keep – maybe they need a little cleaning up or weeding…other stuff needs a refit.

Great questions! Below are some parallel translations of II Timothy 2:15 as well as the hyperlink to commentaries on II Tim.2:15; from all that - what I see is the emphasis is on diligence…concentrating on being truthful/accurate with the interpretation of Scripture in general and the gospel message in particular – and by extension the honest work of pastoring and teaching the flock. I Corinthians 3 addresses some similar themes for church leaders: New International Version Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. This post was inspired by some things I read on Please Stop Saying “God Told Me” by JOSH BUICE ~ ~ ~ ~ The third commandment says You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Deuteronomy 5:11 Concerning wierwille’s claim of God speaking to him audibly - this intentional misuse of God’s name is a clear violation of the third commandment. ~ ~ ~ ~ Is this claim of direct communication from God necessary if we already have the completed canon of Scripture? An aspect of this was brought up on the NT canon thread ~ ~ ~ ~ Paul said to preach the Word of God - not stories about yourself: In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: 2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. II Timothy 4:1-5
