"Yo! Baby!" Seriously, i think that most clergy are sensitive to the awkwardness of "The Title" and they usually drop it almost immediatley. I would do as previously suggested and introduce myself, then if you know the proper title - fine. If you don't, just be honest and say that you are unsure about the proper way to address them. If you really want to win brownie points - even if they just give their first or last name, just add an inquiry such as, 'Well, how would I address you if I had to introduce you to someone and I wanted to honor the commitment you've made." Something like that is fairly diplomatic and it keeps the conversation moving while the other person gets to talk about his or herself. In the meantiime, you have paid them a compliment by referring to their decision to become clergy in the first place.

I only really hate those bluetooth ear thingies. People are walking around looking like Borg... You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile. You will comply. Become one with the collective. Hey! maybe this post should have been in the "About the Way" forum!

Ok I'm confused....again! If Sudo is wearing the chef's hat, then who is that in his avatar? I always thought THAT was Sudo. Now if that person in the avatar is someone famous -please don't ridicule me too much.

OM, I will continually disagree with you on this point. This is not because PFAL didn't say this -but rather because the VERBAL tradition was so different from the Written tradition. If one were to write to the BOT only the Written tradition would be cited. Yet, there were so many reverends that taught something different than what was written - one has to take pause and wonder why. Besides, imagine a new twigger in a branch meeting. Bobby Moyn-han teaches what Belle heard. Do you really think that this new person will go and write anyone? And given all that talk of MOGs and all - do you really think that anyone would question him? I know, I know, you're gonna say that I did when a certain person tried to tell me that so and so was an unbeliever - but that was a situation where I knew the person and I was comfortable with confronting her. Had it been BM I doubt I would have done so, especially given what I hear was the air of distrust in the '90's. Overall, most people are more likely to go with what is taught by someone they trust over what has been taught or written. On top of all this - remember that "revelation" was changing so often in that era....

I am thinking back to my time in Twi as a Wc twig coordinator. On the one hand I made it my mission to really look at each word that was assigned a "literal according to usage." I tried to see how those supposedly more accurate definitions had any traction. Many, many times I made some note to the effect of "I see something different than vpw." Then there's the shameful "flip-side"- I was one of those people that taught that we should read the Word through PFAL-colored glasses. I hope that those folks find it in their hearts to forgive me.......
