I see now this is in the open thread, I'd assumed it was in politics. But the simple point is there are many instances where free society is curtailing its freedoms based on lunatic demands by the radical part of Islam. The cartoon wars is a good example. Very few media outlets ever showed the controversial cartoons, out of "respect" for Islam. Yet vile depictions of Jesus are OK. It is really not about respect, it is fear of retaliation, hence it is submission. It happens gradually, step by step. This is really not that complex of an issue. It is good that (if?) a majority of the billion Muslims are peaceful, but there is a problem with their warrior doctrine. Hopefully the "westernized" version will become dominant, but with a country like Iran getting the bomb and being led by a more radical type, it seems terrorism could increase geometrically. The reason this is in the news is it is another case of "dhimmitude" ... the attitude of submission being the safest route. That so many responses here were loathe to take that on, but rather quick to compare it to other religions that are not a threat, seems somewhat "frightening" to me. As to mstar's blah blah blah comment ... I am "offended" at your suggestion the west should submit early and often. This is not throwing gas on an inferno, this is about not submitting when someone demands you obey or they will burn down your house. You suggest it is easier and prudent to submit ... I agree it is easier, but it sends the wrong message ... the message being that the west is weak, a paper tiger that will back down at the hint of a threat. The same response for oeno's suggestion that I want a crusade. If the west doesn't change it's culture to mollify radical Islam ... that is tantamount to a crusade?

Well, it is tradition now for Groucho to call people that disagree with him "Bush apologists", but that is based on nothing. In this case there seem to be many Islam apologists ... people that are defending the intimidation by Islam on non muslims participating in the arts. Oeno' says what next ... Jews threatening death and mayhem if the merchant of Venice is played. LG rightly points out that it is not the Jews, it is Islam that is demanding others submit even in their own lifestyles. Then there are the comparisons to TWI ... but that is what twi demands of its own members. I don't know that twi has ever demanded the general population submit or they would kill them. All this is just Islam apologism at its worst. Muslims are demanding that those outside the muslim faith submit to their demands, or they will kill them. And even those that disagree feel the need to imply they are no worse than twi or the jews. You guys are already submitting. Now go ahead and explain to me in condescending tones that it is only a handful of Muslims doing this. What matters is that free people are beginning to submit. It is a bad habit to start.

Do you have a source for that info? One barrel to get three sounds high, unless they are talking one barrel in money terms to get three barrels. If that is the case, then the price of oil changes the equation. Years ago I'd read the Saudis could produce for around $8/barrel, which I guess is still largely true, except for inflation. New technologies are developing for getting the oil out of shale oil or sand. I think when they speak of reserves they mean economically viable reserves, with today's technologies. This would have to include not only the cost of the oil to produce new oil, but all the other costs of production.

the point is once the easy oil is running low, the harder oil will be economically feasible. Producers that need oil at $35 to be profitable are maybe still on the sidelines. When OPEC drove oil down to $10 a few years ago, it bankrupt a lot of small producers that needed $20 to break even. I think I recall that the shale oil stuff would require oil at $45 or so to break even. Coal seems to be promising for US, and later we can tap other vast reserves, after we bleed the Middle East dry. It seems the reports that the world is about out of oil are greatly overblown. All that talk about protecting a few acres of flea infested ANWR will melt away if we ever start to run low on oil. In the mean time we will keep enriching nations that want to destroy us.

If that is true, we don't have so much to worry about, except OPEC has to use it's control while it draws down it's reserves. So if we all drive bigger cars and trucks, we can draw down those Saudi reserves a little faster.

There is a lot better science now on dealing with erosion and chemicals getting into groundwater ... maybe some was helped along by people that were motivated by the likes of Joni Mitchell, then went on through school to get it right. But the "environmental" groups that fight against the use of DDT in Africa (as noted in my earlier post) seem to be where sensationalism trumps science and human life is forfeited. It sometimes seems some hard core "greens" answer to perceived overpopulation is to let large masses of people die from these diseases. I have much more faith in my local USDA guy than Greenpeace or Sierra Club.

Those problems are probably only worsened by widespread malaria.

Hey krysilis ... I never heard of that one, but the oldest I saw by that title was from 1990 I think. I imagine a lot of the info out then was good in perhaps turning the market toward products that are safer for us and the environment But I sense that many times public is swayed by sensationalism, and often ends up doing harm.

DDT is making a comeback ... it's about time. Rachel Carson and her book Silent Spring were so very popular in the 60's, but so very wrong. Unfortunately the flower children didn't care about the science, and DDT became known as one of the evils of the establishment ... and was banned. Anyway, it is back, and another 60's movement is shown to be junk. One headline says Rachel killed more people than Stalin. Malaria takes a heavy toll on a country’s economy by discouraging foreign investment and incapacitating otherwise productive people, so these anti-DDT alarmists have been helping to impoverish those they don’t kill. There is something other-worldly, or worse, about well-heeled greens trying to deny the world’s poorest people the very tool used by rich nations to eradicate this disease. Very interesting Evan. I know the farmers around here are in much better shape than I am. My farmer uncles lived into their 90's with lots of ice cream in their diets. As I sit here feebily pecking this out, a ray of light is shining in my foggy brain, saying excercise is the best cure all. And that's exactly what I plan to do, right after a nap.

Great story ... there are sure a lot of stories out there that seem undeniable. About all I know is we are alive, and I don't even know how to make sense of that. Trying to figure out where we go after we die is beyond me. If I was the designer I'd allow for some involvement with our loved ones that had passed. Sorry about your Dad, glad he had help that day, or even our 9th Corps thread would not be born. :)
