Well, you're changing the subject, but I might agree with you there. Maybe ... I haven't caught up on the new law yet.

I see now this is in the open thread, I'd assumed it was in politics. But the simple point is there are many instances where free society is curtailing its freedoms based on lunatic demands by the radical part of Islam. The cartoon wars is a good example. Very few media outlets ever showed the controversial cartoons, out of "respect" for Islam. Yet vile depictions of Jesus are OK. It is really not about respect, it is fear of retaliation, hence it is submission. It happens gradually, step by step. This is really not that complex of an issue. It is good that (if?) a majority of the billion Muslims are peaceful, but there is a problem with their warrior doctrine. Hopefully the "westernized" version will become dominant, but with a country like Iran getting the bomb and being led by a more radical type, it seems terrorism could increase geometrically. The reason this is in the news is it is another case of "dhimmitude" ... the attitude of submission being the safest route. That so many responses here were loathe to take that on, but rather quick to compare it to other religions that are not a threat, seems somewhat "frightening" to me. As to mstar's blah blah blah comment ... I am "offended" at your suggestion the west should submit early and often. This is not throwing gas on an inferno, this is about not submitting when someone demands you obey or they will burn down your house. You suggest it is easier and prudent to submit ... I agree it is easier, but it sends the wrong message ... the message being that the west is weak, a paper tiger that will back down at the hint of a threat. The same response for oeno's suggestion that I want a crusade. If the west doesn't change it's culture to mollify radical Islam ... that is tantamount to a crusade?
-
Well, it is tradition now for Groucho to call people that disagree with him "Bush apologists", but that is based on nothing. In this case there seem to be many Islam apologists ... people that are defending the intimidation by Islam on non muslims participating in the arts. Oeno' says what next ... Jews threatening death and mayhem if the merchant of Venice is played. LG rightly points out that it is not the Jews, it is Islam that is demanding others submit even in their own lifestyles. Then there are the comparisons to TWI ... but that is what twi demands of its own members. I don't know that twi has ever demanded the general population submit or they would kill them. All this is just Islam apologism at its worst. Muslims are demanding that those outside the muslim faith submit to their demands, or they will kill them. And even those that disagree feel the need to imply they are no worse than twi or the jews. You guys are already submitting. Now go ahead and explain to me in condescending tones that it is only a handful of Muslims doing this. What matters is that free people are beginning to submit. It is a bad habit to start.

Do you have a source for that info? One barrel to get three sounds high, unless they are talking one barrel in money terms to get three barrels. If that is the case, then the price of oil changes the equation. Years ago I'd read the Saudis could produce for around $8/barrel, which I guess is still largely true, except for inflation. New technologies are developing for getting the oil out of shale oil or sand. I think when they speak of reserves they mean economically viable reserves, with today's technologies. This would have to include not only the cost of the oil to produce new oil, but all the other costs of production.
-
the point is once the easy oil is running low, the harder oil will be economically feasible. Producers that need oil at $35 to be profitable are maybe still on the sidelines. When OPEC drove oil down to $10 a few years ago, it bankrupt a lot of small producers that needed $20 to break even. I think I recall that the shale oil stuff would require oil at $45 or so to break even. Coal seems to be promising for US, and later we can tap other vast reserves, after we bleed the Middle East dry. It seems the reports that the world is about out of oil are greatly overblown. All that talk about protecting a few acres of flea infested ANWR will melt away if we ever start to run low on oil. In the mean time we will keep enriching nations that want to destroy us.

I read this post on Little Green Footballs about our energy reserves. This is part of it. Pretty interesting. "Where to turn then for the world's energy? North America has by far the worlds largest reserves of hydrocarbons. Granted, it is not easily extracted (requires mining) or cracked into useful products, But our (and Canada's) tar sand and oil shale reserves may be as much as ten times greater than what the Middle East started out with. They will be used when other sources run low. America is also the Saudi Arabia of coal. Coal gasification has been around since WWII (although limited). Bottom line? America in another generation will control the world's energy supplies. World War two made us a superpower. With the fall of the USSR we became a hyperpower. Fifty years from now the tankers will be leaving here full instead of empty, and we will be a true hegemon, ruling the world through control of energy and a good portion of the food supplies it helps produce." If that is true, we don't have so much to worry about, except OPEC has to use it's control while it draws down it's reserves. So if we all drive bigger cars and trucks, we can draw down those Saudi reserves a little faster.

Which reminds me ... where is the gold! I was shadowing a big twi finance guy once ... can't even remember who ... but another heavy thought maybe I shouldn't be there cuz they were discussing the gold ... can't remember what they said. Is the gold just like gold stocks, or do they have physical gold stored in a vault or a hole in the woods somewhere? Just wondering if Craig is out there somewhere asking for change for a Krugerand!

My Mom's church has a fund for putting in wells in Africa. I guess Evan knows a lot about the situation there. From another thread he said "Our longer lives aren't due to how we eat but on interventive medical care, neonatal care and fewer accidents. Every time I go to Africa I'm amazed out how healthy, vital & strong the populace is. Their low life expectancy is due to a high death rate at birth, accidents & lack of medical care when the big diseases hit. By comparison, us Americans are weak, pallid, foggy and tired. I always feel better after eating their food for a few weeks." on a seperate "note" Hey farmer farmer Put away that DDT now Give me spots on my apples But leave me the birds and the bees Please! There is a lot better science now on dealing with erosion and chemicals getting into groundwater ... maybe some was helped along by people that were motivated by the likes of Joni Mitchell, then went on through school to get it right. But the "environmental" groups that fight against the use of DDT in Africa (as noted in my earlier post) seem to be where sensationalism trumps science and human life is forfeited. It sometimes seems some hard core "greens" answer to perceived overpopulation is to let large masses of people die from these diseases. I have much more faith in my local USDA guy than Greenpeace or Sierra Club.

Those problems are probably only worsened by widespread malaria.

Hey krysilis ... I never heard of that one, but the oldest I saw by that title was from 1990 I think. I imagine a lot of the info out then was good in perhaps turning the market toward products that are safer for us and the environment But I sense that many times public is swayed by sensationalism, and often ends up doing harm.

The spirit of the innocent people was great ... as was the spirit of the innocent people going out WOW. I don't know if I still have my "GROOVY" button, but I thought I'd do organic gardening and all that cool stuff. Like the Beatles said "We all want to change the world" But WOW ended up being the wrong Way. TWI turned bad (or started bad), Rachel was wrong but only the movement mattered, the drug culture hasn't helped much, communism became cool, and it was probably the first time our military came home and got spit on. As far out as it was, I'm not sure it was all it was hallucinated to be. Thanks for starting the new thread, this was kinda what i was thinking of for that really.

So are you irresponsible to say it was true science if indeed it was wrong? LOL JunkScience.com is specific on this. The rest of that article is very good as well.Carson wrote “Dr. [James] DeWitt's now classic experiments [show] that exposure to DDT, even when doing no observable harm to the birds, may seriously affect reproduction. Quail into whose diet DDT was introduced throughout the breeding season survived and even produced normal numbers of fertile eggs. But few of the eggs hatched.” "DeWitt actually reported no significant difference in egg hatching between birds fed DDT and birds not fed DDT. Carson predicted a cancer epidemic that could hit “practically 100 percent” of the human population. This prediction hasn’t materialized, no doubt because it was based on a 1961 epidemic of liver cancer in middle-aged rainbow trout — later attributed to aflatoxin. There is no credible evidence that DDT poses a cancer risk, whatsoever. As wrong as Carson was, the Environmental Protection Agency’s action against DDT — the precedent for next week’s efforts to ban the chemical — was worse. " So it seems Carson was the irresponsible one, but she did sell a lot of books. Her later statement you quoted clarified nothing. And from your site ... "environmental advocates of the global DDT ban contend that since DDT is not proven to be entirely safe, it should be banned, thus implicitly favoring wildlife over human life without having to explicitly state their preference". Where is the love and compassion? You're giving Carson credit for the new science since that? Good science and true environmentalism makes good sense. But much of today's movement is not based on science. This is from that junkscience site from Decmber, 2000.The World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace, Physicians for Social Responsibility and 250 other environmental groups will advocate the insecticide DDT be banned at next week’s United Nations Environment Programme meeting in Johannesburg. .... The WWF et al. often exploit “the children” as a stalking horse for their dubious agenda. Their effort to ban DDT is a chilling reminder of this cynicism.
-
From The First Post (not my first post) "Even at the time, Carson's claims that DDT was responsible for everything from the thinning of eggshells to cancer in humans looked shaky. By the mid-1980s they had been utterly discredited. Yet by then Carson's claims had achieved the status of holy writ among environmentalists - and among right-on officials in government ministries. Third World nations were threatened with trade sanctions if they even suggested using DDT in fields or homes. ... In years to come, the ban on DDT will be seen for what it is: a scandalous example of half-baked ecological concerns being put above the needs of humans. That realisation will come too late for the tens of millions who paid for this folly with their lives." This is what I have read previously also ... I'll see what else I can find on that. One point was that a lot of policy in the 60's (and ever since?) is made based on placating hysterical movements. It seems like an interesting thing to discuss.

DDT is making a comeback ... it's about time. Rachel Carson and her book Silent Spring were so very popular in the 60's, but so very wrong. Unfortunately the flower children didn't care about the science, and DDT became known as one of the evils of the establishment ... and was banned. Anyway, it is back, and another 60's movement is shown to be junk. One headline says Rachel killed more people than Stalin. Malaria takes a heavy toll on a country’s economy by discouraging foreign investment and incapacitating otherwise productive people, so these anti-DDT alarmists have been helping to impoverish those they don’t kill. There is something other-worldly, or worse, about well-heeled greens trying to deny the world’s poorest people the very tool used by rich nations to eradicate this disease. The rest can be found here. What else was wrong in the 60's? Well, when did the sex drugs Jesus thing start? OK, maybe VP jsut glommed on to some of the "genuine" Jesus movement ... not sure. The 60's ... you say you want a revolution? Well you know ... we all want to change the world ... WOW :)

Excie can interpret foreign tongues ... I'm sure she can bring forth a word of interpretation ... Cubs are surging ... Reds are bitten by devils Cubs will lose 4-0 Bosox are possessed by a choking spirit ... Cardinals need some momentum, San Fran is on the edge ... that should be a good game

Very interesting Evan. I know the farmers around here are in much better shape than I am. My farmer uncles lived into their 90's with lots of ice cream in their diets. As I sit here feebily pecking this out, a ray of light is shining in my foggy brain, saying excercise is the best cure all. And that's exactly what I plan to do, right after a nap.

Hap, when I use my credit card that shows I voted Republican, I get a dollar off the Democrat price. It pays to be part of the vast right wing conspiracy. Other than that, I'd guess it is just a distribution thing, and how contracts are arranged maybe? ... It is more evident with prices dropping so quickly. Now they are talking about prices back at $1.25 before long. Bush approval ratings are up to like 45, so using the gas price/approval rating equation, Bush will be at 65 for November.... of course after the election prices will rebound to $3. . . . wink2:

Great story ... there are sure a lot of stories out there that seem undeniable. About all I know is we are alive, and I don't even know how to make sense of that. Trying to figure out where we go after we die is beyond me. If I was the designer I'd allow for some involvement with our loved ones that had passed. Sorry about your Dad, glad he had help that day, or even our 9th Corps thread would not be born. :)
