  1. Heck yes Happy Birthday Shell! I realised something the other day and that is you and I are friends. I think that is a cool concept. Mikey
  2. I had an opportunity to upgrade to Vista I like my Windows XP and after uploading many XP updates I am satisfied it meets my basic needs. I have no personal agenda against Vista it just seems to me another marketing ploy to generate income on a new product vs refining XP. Hey Tech good to see, Tom Sushi Tech Chas Sudo
  3. I talked with a pal today and she said most of her friends use Front Page however the ones that don't pretty much write their own scripts or use programs that most humans can't understand. Frontpage is expensive as is another program I have on loan and buying. My GIS program costs are justified and I'm waiting on the check. Now I must justify a webpage development program. From what I have heard Frontpage is pretty intuitive and comfy so even a novice can build an interactive website. I'm not asking for much, I want website content and links, interactive surveys and polls, conversion calculators, mpegs and jpegs. I want something easier to learn on your own than esri's arcmap and a 1/4 as many buttons.
  4. Hmmm... Considering what I have in mind perhaps I will hire an expert. I'm ok with basic programming but when it comes to an webserver I tend to get lost in semantics. Thanks Potato
  5. I think I needed to be more assertive with where I wanted the file to go, or maybe I just needed to open it or perhaps I was required to snap my fingers and tap dance to America the Beautiful, heck I really don't know but Monday I will request funding for a college comp nerd. Which brings up another question which is better the better programing program like the one yu sugested or the one that comes with the webhst?? Short sight is a simple site and easy to navigate with links to information and online registration, the second would involve conversion calculators and lnks to and databases of relevant websites.
  6. Never mind I got it worked out. The power of upload and delete, try and try again has once again prevailed!! The links work, the pictures are smaller than I expected but I'm not going to mess with it AND most important the link to register for the class Powerful Abundant Farming directs them right to where they need to be. I promised folks I'd have the page up by tommorrow, it lacks a few instructors pictures and other data I wanted but for now it is what it is (at least till we get this first class over with) then I will worry about updating it, revising the curriculum and working with students and instructors in developing mentoring partnerships with local growers. After 3 yrs of development work its seems silly to be thwarted by a webpage but I was for the first time close to saying F it I'm tired of this. Which I am. Folks have asked if I am excited and I say no, two years ago yes, a year ago maybe but today, lets just get this damned thing moving... Tater is was a source issue, I needed to upload the index_files before I uploaded the index.html otherwise the program would kick the index_files into a different directory than the public_html where I wanted them to be. Or maybe I needed to open the file, heck I really don't know for sure but it's up and thats all that matters. I will work out the othere details later, hoepfully MUCH later. Thanks Mike
  7. I have a webpage done in MS Publisher. I have a domain and hosting through bluehost.com. I follow their instructions to save a copy of my site in a new file called index.html which szves it as two files-index.html and index_files. I have followed their instructions to the letter and either 1) nothing shows up or 2) only the first page shows up and then without the jpegs I had on the origional. Has anyone worked with bluehost and or publisher? Many thanks Mike
  8. Girl I have no problem telling people I was involved in derway. I explain how it started, how I got involved and how I left. I helped the process of exposing them, I have nothing to be ashamed of.
  9. Both if you consider grammer school and high school. In kindergarten I pushed the school yard bully off the slide cuz he ws picking on my girlfriend. During grammer school I was bullied till the 7th grad when I beat the crap out of three school yard bullies and gained a reputation as someone not to mess with. In high school I was bullied but from what I have learned since, my bullies are fat bald old men who are afraid of their shadows.

    Gangs

Are you guys still arguing over guns? I have carried since '86 I have dealt with many interesting situations and thankfully only needed to pull it in earnest once. In that situation, in 95 or 6 I think I was at a gathering and things looked weird so I went to my car n got my gun so I could exit my family from the premises without much fuss. Thankfully that wasn't necessary and thanks to you all we can all rest better. I'm not a big fan of the Clint Eastwood approach to solving social issues.

    Gangs

Dot you need to move west. CC has a Latinos United Org. that has solid connections in the county government. It seens the county got an up close look at potential gang problems and started looking at what might help in preventing an outbreak of crime associated with gang activity and other issues of the latino population, simply accepting the facts of a situation goes along ways towards solving the problem at hand. They have english and ged classes and have a legal help line, I've been asked to help but so far I'm pretty much impressed by what they are doing on their own. I cannot say much on this program success as it is new and was implimented before a gang problem existed but I think it is a hopeful program and certainly founded on a common interest. I'm keeping my eye open for project and funding opportunities but alot of that will depend on the needs of the community.

    Gangs

After I saw how disorganized the Katrina evacuation was I had a bad feeling about an upswing in gang related activity in host communities. I doubt anybody from the Dept of Corrections and Probation gave much thought to the impact thousands of parolee's and gangbangers would have on the rest of the country. Gangs are dangerous and taking them on can get you or your family hurt or killed. The police are paid to deal with them, I suggest you let them. However if you happen to be in the barbershop and overhear something of interest it is your civic duty to pass on the info to the authorities. A program called Lucky 7's has met with limited success. http://www.metroactive.com/papers/metro/01...olice-9901.html The only downside to it is most of the gangbangers move so it does not *solve* the problem, it just moves it down the road a town or two. From what I have read, good intelligence and interdepartmental cooperation helps considerably when tackling gangs. Having the full support of the PD, City Council and special interest groups can minimize negative publicity and consitutional challenges that might arise from implimenting a get tough program. There are funds available for tackling some of the underlying causes that lead to gang membership, however it would take a skilled adminstrator to handle the diverse demands such a program would require.

    A Speach

I'm beginning to have fun with this. Due to my stupidity I'm dealing with politicians, appointed officials, special interest groups, college students, professors, federal, state and local agencies, non profits and a few groups I helped birth. There are only a few folks taking the lead in the areas I am dealing with, not all of them play nice and I am EXPECTED by many to voice an opinion. I found this is a dangerous position to be in so I quit talking and began listening and designing the SGS program (the first of its kind in the southeast inspite of what GO may say). So I stress over needless details sometimes, silly me.

I did. I was finishing up my point on declining farm revenue and asked them if they could think of any crop that was generating it's growers a genuine year to year profit. I didn't let them answer but went on to ask why that was. This made a good sedgeway into why specialized crops tailored to a specific market and grown by a limited number of skilled farmers can also make a profit, only in a more legitimate business. What stressed me so much was I had this tangled mess of ideas I wanted to get across and the more I tried to untangle it the worse it got. I wanted to weave a tapestry and all I could see was this mass of yarn daring me to try. Today I think I knitted a pot holder.

Thank you for your suggestions, the speech went well, I gave it in front of the dean of the dept and two profs. It went well enough for them to let me go ahead n schedule this for presenting to the different classes wanting me to speak. I basicly told the story of the sustainable ag and development movement here, how it got started how its progressed and where it is going, it's an interesting story. Oh more good news! My first day of class was today, I'm taking 15 hrs, I just learned that all my courses have been switched to self study which means I'll spend about 20 hrs on campus this semester sweet eh? :)

I feel for you Jonny we had the same thing happen here. Your event didn't happen around the time of the Valdez oil spill did it? We had a decent clothing manufacturing business here, 12 plants altogether, making high quality suits shirts and trousers. Locals who worked there bought n paid for homes, raised kids, put some through college and retired. Then corperate profit margins began dominating the clothing purchasing business and all the accounts moved overseas. One shop is still open making military uniforms. The town went into a steady decline until it realised three simple truths 1) there are a million little towns out there just like ours 2) they are all competing for the same limited resources to kick starting their economy and 3) the only sure way for the town to pull itself out of its rut was for it to believe in and invest in itself. We did and things are getting better. It's funny how the interests of a few can affect many isn't it. We have the option of joining the Metro Atlanta ratrace, this side of the county (so far) is opting out.

Johnny I owe you an apology, I shouldn't have been so quick to snap like that...sorry It is funny, thanks for trying to help What has to be said has alot of me in it but what I say will not have me in it, it will be the *us* that made all this possible in the first place, which is why I liked Coolwaters post on selling an idea or in my case, the pwoer of an idea (or several). At least this is my thinking. I set an impossible deadline for the rough draft and then frittered the day away watching ballgames, I got the date put off till next week and I'll be talking throughout the semester. I'm really trying to make the focus of this on something other than me, which can be challenging, it's we and us not me and them, I like that idea alot. Thanks Oh and to handle the marijuana issue, I'm going to ask my listeners what is America's largest cash crop and where does all that money go? me

I'm not planning to make a prestnation tommorrow on these disjointed subjects altho I may have in a previous life.. Ok...so far it involves speaking to a poly sci class, two geoscience classes, a history class and an urban planning and develppmment class on urban agriculture and sustainability. Previous to this (in 97) I was asked to speak to their art class regarding art. I initend to include nude beekeeping as part of my talk and I am hoping I can make apoint towards the legalization of marujuana (just to prove myself difficult)

I've been asked by several UWG professors to speak to their class, for once I am at a loss for words. Any suggestions?
  23. Ideas...hmmm it seems I've had a few of them. One turned into a KidsPeace facility, others helped rebuild a ravaged non profit, oh and another one laid the groundwork for a sustainable agriculture network to sell produce in the big city. I never got paid a dime for any of those but it is sure nice to setback n look at whats developed and to know I had a hand in it. Now for the one idea I AM getting paid for, the Growers School, it's not been easy cuz 1) most folks didn't see the need for a local stable food supply (until 9-11 and Katrina that is) and 2) there were very few programs to model after and 3) folks weren't willing to invest in something that hadn't been done before. That said the idea did sprout and I'm currently developing the project (assembling the course materials, instructors, developing the demo plot on campus) and most importantly getting paid to do it. This project started out three years ago with an errant email and has taken alot of my personal time getting it to this point but since its the first of its kind in the southeast and possibly the nation I'm ok with that. So you asked how to go about doing it. That depends on what you mean by *selling* an idea. Do you want to have an idea accepted without pay or do you want your idea adopted and make some $ from it. Selling as in salesmanship or selling as in making tons of money. I knew I wasn't going to get paid for the things I wasn't gonna get paid for but I was dammed sure determined I was going to for the school project. That required me to assemble a 7 member partnership of federal, state and local group. This meant I had to sell them on the idea first and then get them together to hash out the details. Not all of them played nice. I did alot of internet research and worked the program through several decision making tools (logical, rational and my own version) to ensure that the result of program enactment would match the desired outcome. Other than that it's a piece of cake lol
  24. Thanks for the link Paw, I think this event was warrented
