    Coffee Anyone?

dammitallanyhow! I fail to understand why we CAN'T edit here after the 12 hour limit!!! Wasn't there a poll on this a while back????? Why hold the poll if the majority gets over-ruled? Here's the pics from earlier. It would have been SO MUCH MORE SIMPLE to have been able to put them where they were originally!

Every "job" needs a supervisor. Here's Mittens (the house cat) checking up on me.

Ahhh. Sadly, I realized (when my "new" Nechville arrived), that at my age this will probably be the last banjo I ever buy. There's 3 or 4 other brands that I would love to have one of (ODE D model being chief), but it probably ain't gonna happen. The only other instrument I really want to have now, is a five string Dahlia fiddle - - also made in Minnesota. I don't think I'll be adding any more instruments to the household here anytime soon. Here's some pictures of my "newest baby". The built in capo and engraved tuning pegs: A close up, with the resonator off and the "Heli-Mount" system: Another pic or two of the rail system the capo rides on: The engraving: The tailpiece:

    Bill - - - Congrats on the new "family members". You're going to be one happy camper. Here's a video of Tom Nechville (who made my "new banjo") picking there at Zepps. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly33RX9aat4?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly33RX9aat4?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ly33RX9aat4?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

Father forgive me for I have sinned. I KNEW I should've warned Mstar to leave his checkbook in his car, before venturing into that "den of temptation" known as Zepps Music Store.

No. I don't know him personally. The only contact i've had with him is reading all the very positive experiences that others have had both with doing business with him, and meeting him in person. Don is someone I'd like to meet.

Reading over on the Banjo Hangout this morning, a lady from England posted a really cool link to the story of Vital Mental Medicine: Shackleton's Banjo from the BBC. You can listen to it - - - - - > > > HERE!

I hear that. I don't go ANYWHERE (long distance) without the fiddle/ mandolin/ and banjo.

OK. I'll take you up on that. Come 2012, vote Republican! Seriously, here's hoping Don can spend some time with you. He's amazing when it comes to frailing. Clean. Crisp. And really good renditions of any tune he chooses to pick. I just got a new banjo myself. A Nechville Nuvo, made here in Minnesota. State of the art workmanship. No fifth string peg. All the pegs are at the peghead. The picking/ tuning possibilities with this banjo are endless! Here's a couple of pics of the Nechville (made in 1994) - - - - > > > Here's a pic of the "rail" system that both the regular capo and the fifth string capo ride on. I'm in love with this thing, and feel like a kid in a candy store!

Maybe because he wanted to/ had a chance to pick on a Rickenbacker 4001S?
  13. A Grease Spot Cafe theme song? There is one, and ONLY one (in my humble opinion) that really "tells the story". Whether you were in twi-1/ twi-2/ or twi-3 under docvic/ lcm, or rosie, the result was the same. We were all "caged". Kept within the boundaries set by them, and not allowed to explore personal freedom or goals set for us by ourselves. Does anyone else remember the teaching docvic did on "freedom" as pertains to a bird in a cage like I do? He did a good job of saying that the bird was free (within boundaries set by it's master), but not TRUELY free. As far as I'm concerned, they were @$$holes who promoted "freedom in Christ", so we could be subject to them instead. We were the "caged bird" docvic talked about so many years ago. Free - - - but only within the restraints set by him and his cronies. The first verse of the GSC theme song goes like this: If I leave here tomorrow Would you still remember me For I must be traveling on now 'Cause there's too many places I've got to see. Take a hike twi. Thanks to GSC - - - We're all Free Birds now. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkTQUtx818w?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkTQUtx818w?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkTQUtx818w?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
  14. I never was on Waydale, so I don't know how many members/ lurkers/ etc., were there. Current membership of GSC is 2,824, and many here have multiple accounts (look at the birthday section). I'm guessing one could deduct hundreds from the membership here to arrive at an accurate number. Ahhhhhhhhh Yes!!!! LONG LIVE THE!! < < < - - - (all 205 pages of it!)

    11/22/63

I was in 6th grade. Catholic Grade School. We were sent home for the day after hearing the news. On top of that - - - It was my parents 13th wedding anniversary on that same day. With the town (basically) shut down due to what happened, they stayed home that evening. There's a former "baby-sitter" who didn't get to work in Indiana that night, back in 1963.

Nice touch with the Xylophone and pedal steel there, waysider! Love that Levon Helm too, Groucho! What a voice, eh? Here's one written and performed by a friend of mine - - - Becky Buller singing and doing fiddle. A prolific instrumentalist and songwriter. Doing one of her tunes: "Rest My Weary Feet". <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1j7a7O0lcU?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1j7a7O0lcU?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1j7a7O0lcU?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

<meta charset="utf-8"> I first heard John Renbourn 30 or so years ago. His talent blew me away back then. He's so good --- even after all these years. I'd love to know half of what he's forgotten. Thanks for posting that clip. It brought back some very pleasant memories.
  19. I make it a point to be polite and courteous to whomever (and I DO mean whomever) knocks on my front door. Chances are they don't really want to be there either, and it NEVER hurts to be polite and considerate. No - - - the folks who HAVE knocked on the door don't get inside my house, but I don't "turn them away". That's what front porches are for. :) I've seating for 3 or 4 folks on mine. It comes in handy time to time. I don't have to accept whatever they are "selling", and they get the chance to "log time" at my house (if I have time to listen). Win/ win all the way around. Even though they didn't "score" with me (making the sale or signing the green card or whatever), they will with whomever they're proselytizing/ selling for. I remember those days myself and I don't envy them in the least. I wish I had been treated more kindly in my days doing the same. Sometimes I was. More frequently than not, I wasn't. But I'm guessing all of us here are familiar with THAT scenario, eh?
  20. Am rooting for my "home team" here in Minney-soda (The Twins), but it looks bleak. :(

    Song of the moment

Here's Sam picking on the fiddle. I like the first song best, but the 2nd is really reminiscent of his NGR #1 days. :) <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWuxaO0SQPE?fs=1&hl=en_US"><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWuxaO0SQPE?fs=1&hl=en_US"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWuxaO0SQPE?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></object> Here's Sam on the mando. (Like I said - - - There's only ONE Sam). <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7sXUptv0Jg?fs=1&hl=en_US"><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7sXUptv0Jg?fs=1&hl=en_US"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7sXUptv0Jg?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></object> You can ask Mstar about these videos here. He was privileged enough to hear Sam with this group, just recently. Scott Vestal with the Stealth banjo breaks all the rules, along with all the other pickers in the band. I'm jealous!

    Song of the moment

That's Sam. In bluegrass - - - there is only one Sam. Just like there is only one Doc, one Earl, one Tony, one Bela, etc. :) Sam Bush plays both fiddle and mandolin equally well, though noted more for his mandolin picking. The clip I posted was "2nd generation" New Grass Revival. Sam is the only member of the "1st generation" New Grass Revival group. The others picking there are Pat Flynn (guitar)/ Bela Fleck (banjo), and John Cowan (bass). The New Grass Revival was an "offshoot" of the Bluegrass Alliance. (Yup - - there's "off shoots" in music too). Original members of NGR #1 were - - - - Courtney Johnson (banjo), Ebo Walker (bass) Sam Bush (fiddle and mandolin), and Curtis Burch (guitar and dobro). Courtney died, and was replaced by Bela. Ebo got himself into prison, for a VERY long time. He was replaced by John Cowan on Bass. Curtis just wandered off one day, and didn't come back. Pat Flynn was hired to take his spot on guitar. That leaves Sam as the last original member. And the video I posted is the 2nd generation NGR (New Grass Revival). There you have it. Here's a pic of three of the original members (John Cowan is on the right. He's the one who took Ebo's spot on bass) Left to right - - - Courtney (banjo), Curtis (guitar and dobro), and Sam (mandolin and fiddle).
