Music - - Who've you seen/heard lately?
dmiller replied to jardinero's topic in Movies, Music, Books, Art
Ha! Reminds me a friend back in Indiana (many, many, many moons ago), who soaked his harps in a glass of water to get the best sound out of them. I thought it was strange, but he had the best sounding harps around, even if the reeds didn't last as long, as a result. And he was the only *harp* player welcomed at the bluegrass jams we held back then. He was good enough to make die-hard bluegrasser's realize that musicianship transcendes boundaries, and genres. Heh --- he always drove a *classic* VW bug (pre-66 when it was all 6 volt), and I remember also that if there was any hose under the *hood* that he didn't understand, he got rid of it, and plugged it up. He figured there should only be two hoses underneath --- one for the brakes, and one for the fuel. :D I first heard of Charlie Musselwhite back in the 80's, and love his "Ace Of Harps" recording. Thanks for mentioning him -- it brought back some fond memories! :) -

Tonto --- yep. I do. There is an awesome group here called TRAMPLED BY TURTLES, that don't ever start to do a set before then. :( They are all younger (in their 20's), and I guess the evening is just beginning for them at that time. :D They are a bluegrass *jam* band (is that an oxymoron??), and to get a seat at one of their concerts, you have to be there 2 hours in advance. Like you -- I can't do that anymore. I like concerts that start around 7 PM, and end in time for me to see the evening weather report!! -
And the Dalai Lama said ..... "A bowl is most useful when it is empty" Bet he didn't say that at suppertime! ;) :D ;)

Lenny Bruce, eh??? I heard docvic say that line lots back in the 70's. It figures that he didn't come up with it on his own.

Some of their posts are absolutely hilarious. Like THIS ONE.

Well -- I couldn't get in (my puter is an outdated dinosaur - I guess). they did allow me to reach their store though. Speaking of satirical sites --- here is a great one. Makes ya wanna laugh (jabs in all the right places), and cry (it's so true), at the same time Click the pic.

I agree with the Chef. Praying here too. It's all I can do since I've not dealt with things like this either and have no advice to give, although everything already said here makes a ton of sense. One thing I might add though. If she became a "weeping mess" after a coupla drinks, tell her to stay away from the alcohol. She doesn't need any depressants added to what she already has on her plate, but your advice of "it's really okay to allow yourself to feel okay, okay?" is great advice. Praying for her, and you. And thank you for being there for her so faithfully. David

And it would be a treat to be there!! There is no finer feeling anywhere, than there is walking into a jam session instrument in hand and seeing others already swatting out tunes, and seeing them move around so you can join in. B) Live music is the best, and (these days) I go to performances that I can sit in on, and they are never the big name folks. I like local. I like regional. I like simple. It's great if I can sit in on the fiddle, and pick along. :) Mstar -- what a great photo! Backroom of a barbershop --- man -- does that bring back memories!! -

Well, lessee here. It was May of 1985 for me, and it happened in the Black Hills of South Dakota. So far, so good. Here enters the *variables* that make my story (somewhat) interesting. :) I had just gotten divorced, and decided that the *drive time* out to the Black Hills (alone) would help clear my head a bit about pertinent issues in my life. Chr*s Granl*ch was the local coordinator here in Duluth, and told me I needed to pick up *so and so* in another town in southern Minnesota, and give him a ride there to LEAD. I was informed the guy was hurting, and needed to get this healing experience. I refused, and said I needed my time alone. Btw -- Chr*s and every last believer from town here (besides myself) hitch-hiked to the to the LEAD experience, and he was ....ed off at me for driving -- but wtf??? Why stick your thumb out, when you can drive? :D I figured -- heck with this other guy who needs a ride. He might be hurting, but I was too back then, and I sure didn't need to hear another sob story, when I was contemplating my own. We all met in Rapid City, parked cars in the local shopping mall lot, and high-tailed it for the foot hills. Chr*s especially was ticked off that he was *relegated* to a group of folks he had never met before, and had no control over. :D All of a sudden, he wasn't *man #1* any more, and the look on his face, showed the hurt big time. He wanted all of us from the local area to be in the *twig* area that he had control of, yet he had no control of us as a group, at that time. We did our *duos*, we did our rock climbing, and we did the rappeling. And then our session was cut short by a uniformed Park Ranger (blue suit, and shiny gun on hip) who was looking for the guy in charge of us all (I honestly do forget who that was now --- Kevin somebody-or-other), to let us know that Hdqtrs. called to tell us docvic passed away. Seems that L.E.A.D. was a traveling "Limb locale" (or something like that), and they got news, as needed. Well we got the news that day (May 20, 1985) -- and the LEAD leaders, decided that it was over, and we were all going home. Btw --- by the time of the return trip, I took on some riders coming home. They were tired of hitch-hiking, and I had met my devils and conquered. That's my L.E.A.D. story. :) David

Live music is great. :) So many styles of it to check out. I saw Doyle LAWSON and BOB BLACK as well. But nothing beats going to a local coffeehouse, and hearing them up close, and personal. :) -
:D :D :D Ok, give already! Which is it?? We love ya either way, and thanks for all your past prayers in the prayer forum, and thought-fullness for those in need. You are a blessing to this site. :) Happy birthday and may many more come your way. (ps --- I think it's somewhere lower than both 147 or 87!) ;) David

Sam and Bessie: (An elderly couple, Sam and Bessie, are from Austin, Texas.) Sam always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots. Seeing some on sale one day, he buys them, and is walking proudly all the way home.He walks into the house and says to his wife, "Notice anything different about me?" Bessie looks him over, "Nope." Frustrated Sam storms off into the bathroom, undresses, and walks back into the room completely naked except for the boots. Again he asks, a little louder this time, "Notice anything different now?" Bessie looks up and says, "Sam, what's so different? It's hanging down today it was hanging down yesterday and it'll be hanging down again tomorrow." Furious, Sam yells, "And do you know why it's hanging down, Bessie? It's hanging down because it's looking and admiring my new cowboy boots!" To which Bessie replies, ever so slowly, "Shoulda bought a hat, Sam. Ya shoulda bought a hat." :o :o

Thank you Paw. I'll try that. Hap is a poor misguided soul, and neeeeeeds me in chat to set him straight! (or --- was it the other way around?) Thanks.

Celebrating Senility: I feel like my body has gotten totally out of shape, so I got my doctor's permission to join a fitness club and start exercising. I decided to take an aerobics class for seniors. I bent, twisted, gyrated, jumped up and down and perspired for an hour. But, by the time I got my leotards on, the class was over. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Reporters interviewing a 104 year-old woman: "And what do you think is the best thing about being 104?" the reporter asked. She simply replied, "No peer pressure."

Grrrrrr. I clicked on the Java.com icon that showed up (telling me I needed to upgrade), and all I got was this --- I specifically clicked on *classic mac* (9.2), and that is what I got. Guess it's time for a new puter, or sumpthing. :(
