    Rosa Parks

Just a little blurb from the NYT article honoring her. Not a lot of people know that the Rosa Parks bus incident was not an isolated event, but an opportunity that Blacks sought to demonstrate intolerance of segregation - - particularly following the landmark Supreme Ct. ruling on Brown v. The Board of Eduction. They saw that ruling as huge signal that they could "push back" on the injustices they were forced to endure and a growing numbers of Blacks were couragously getting arrested to force their equal status under the law. Mrs. Parks herself was very active in the local NAACP and other groups that had simply had enough. From the NYT More from the same article posted above: Rosa Parks entering a Montgomery, Ala., court in 1956. More Photos > For years blacks had complained, and Mrs. Parks was no exception. "My resisting being mistreated on the bus did not begin with that particular arrest," she said. "I did a lot of walking in Montgomery." After a confrontation in 1943, a driver named James Blake ejected Mrs. Parks from his bus. As fate would have it, he was driving the Cleveland Avenue bus on Dec. 1, 1955. He demanded that four blacks give up their seats in the middle section so a lone white man could sit. Three of them complied. Recalling the incident for "Eyes on the Prize," a 1987 public television series on the civil rights movement, Mrs. Parks said: "When he saw me still sitting, he asked if I was going to stand up and I said, 'No, I'm not.' And he said, 'Well, if you don't stand up, I'm going to have to call the police and have you arrested.' I said, 'You may do that.' " Her arrest was the answer to prayers for the Women's Political Council, which was set up in 1946 in response to the mistreatment of black bus riders, and for E. D. Nixon, a leading advocate of equality for blacks in Montgomery. Blacks had been arrested, and even killed, for disobeying bus drivers. They had begun to build a case around a 15-year-old girl's arrest for refusing to give up her seat, and Mrs. Parks had been among those raising money for the girl's defense. But when they learned that the girl was pregnant, they decided that she was an unsuitable symbol for their cause. And yes, DMiller - - that IS true and has been well documented: J.

  22. Happy Birthday, Rick. Hope it is a memorable one! J. And Sudo!!!!???? Did we miss your birthday recently?????? Or was it just me who missed it??? J.
  23. Hey Sudo darlin! You were sorely missed, but we did enjoy the cabin. Thank you again for arranging the transfer! Joseph and I had a great time (especially since Rascal's two oldest girls were present who joseph had a blast with!!!!). Yeah, it was a cool and very family friendly place. Rascal and I already made plans to go back this spring or some time to canoe the caves with the kids. Most of us were in a line of cabins right off a pond with Rascal and tribe campin' right down from us, so we naturally gathered at the "Food Queen's" place for fire, food and fun. And the kids were just down the hill fishing and havin a blast. The teens got to go for hikes with the new "horse dog" (Rascal's oldest daughter's new Zena) and get in some miniature golf together. And they were all good with herding the little ones so the adults could gab and have fun! The weather was nice and cool. Autumn has set in, so it made it perfect for sitting around the campfire and catching up. So nice to catch up with Paw, our lovely Bennie Dick (Bowtwi's new name for our own herbaljuan, the benevolent dictator), Shell, Bowtwi, the Princess, Rascal and partial tribe - - and late, but a delightful surprise - - Little Hawk and son -- - and meet new Weenies - - Belle, WWJLA and lovely friend, Mr. Ham, Abigail and Man of a Thousand Screen Names and boys, Bow's darlin' dear, and of course, your's truly and "the boy" :D And even Belle's dear parents joined us for fun and food and are now official Southern Comfort Weenies. What lovely parents you have, dear Belle. So glad they could join us. And I also echo the comments above about WWJLA's angelic voice. Thank you for sharing it with us! A good time was had by all. Already ready to plan the next one! Love to you all. Miss you already! J. and J.
  24. Paw! You are wicked! J. ;) 1 :D :D :D :D :D :D
