OK... so it encrypts it from the router to the Laptop... does my laptop also have the software to encrypt the broadcast back to the router? (or am I being too much of a simpleton here?)

Here's what I used: I used the TKIP. This seems to be newer (and better?) technology than WEP... ...so this should keep the neighbors out?

I'm reading in the "more" section of the router admin page about WPA and WEP... I'm not real clear on them... I know they're encryption... but it doesn't really give a lot of info about what to do... I'll need to change my network settings as well won't I? (sorry, I just know enough to usually get in trouble, just trying to avoid that).

With the limited range of my wireless router do I really need to be that worried about security? I mean, beyond the neighbors? I know most of them and they're more interested in their lawns... and it's not like there's folks parked in a van in the street in front of my house with a directional antenna pointed my way... I'll check the AirSnare thing out... but I'll really be surprised if it shows other MACs attempting to access...

Thanks... the whole thing works really well... the only "problem" I had was setting up the VPN's for work... and it wasn't really a problem, just took some time to figure out...

I have the Linksys WRT54G wireless router. Two Sony Ziva Centrino Laptops (B) and have a Linksys G card in the slot of the HP P4. I currently have the router set up to only allow the MAC addresses of my computers. Is that as secure as WEP? If not, how does this WEP work? HegotHope: did you ever go Wireless? That G router I have is only $79 without any rebates (and if you have B's, they work on it as well). On one side of the house I get the notification that there's another network available so I'm guessing the neighbors have wireless as well. Maybe once you get yours installed you can take your laptop over there and see if the signal travels that far. Cordless phone noise is sometimes a problem and there are definitely hotter and colder spots in the house. Like others have said, the signal will generally carry similar to a cordless phone (similar method).

wow geek! thanks... I guess that's why "it's Greek to me"... and Golfie, pronouncing 'wash' as 'warsh' is just a midwest thing... my Mom (who grew up in small town Kansas) still pronounces it that way and she's got a degree from a legitimate university!
