  1. I have heard lots about the Texas Hill Country. And, I have heard that there a bazillion gazillion deer down thataway. I have a friend who lives in San Marcos which is near there (I think) but, it all sounds way too hot for me, even though they do go inner tubing down the San Marcos River which sounds fun. And Dooj, if The Boy heads your way, I'll let him know. But, how old are your kids? You have daughters, right? My boy is twenty and a little "hound dog". So....
  2. Here's a possible song title. It would have to be Country Western though: "Love Took My Heart Out (and stomped that sucker flat!)"
  3. Well now Tom, I'd be proud to have you as my neighbor, and I thank you for that. We'd go fishing for king salmon too! And whale watching, and all kinds of cool stuff. And no doubt have some fine conversation. And as far as this thread goes, well it sure sounds crazy down there where Dot lives. I surely hope they can sell their house and get away. It would be nice if the problems there could actually be solved, but when we reach our fifties, do we really want to launch in to a neighborhood rehab program complete with all of the drama as well as retaliation by some mindless criminals? I wouldn't. I'd just want to tie up my loose ends and walk away. Kind of like when a calf roper throws on "two wraps and a double hooey" and walks away. You know; "I'm done. Let someone else figure it out, life's too short". Anyway, this has been an interesting thread fore shore. Hope all is well in Texas. My son is down in Amarillo and working with my brother in law building steel buildings. He is having a hard time with the heat. But he's enjoying himself and hopefully growing up alot.
  4. And hey, I just gotta say that I am totally "heartened" (as opposed to dis-heartened) by the respectful dialogue here. Even when there has been disagreements. Really, I like it when we can agree, disagree, argue and even get somewhat personal. But it has been nice to see that it hasn't been really ugly and full of wicked attacks. I love youz guys, alla youz.... Kevin
  5. Well illustrated Dot... Alaska, The Last Frontier! :)
  6. Wow Tom, I can hardly believe that you said that. Really, I didn't expect that from you. I am not saying at all that "all Mexican imigrants are "gangstas". And neither is Dot. She very clearly said (somewhere back in this thread) that she had some very nice ethnic neighbors who were very responsible and kind and nice to have as neighbors. But they too sold out. Oh here it is: I have said in the past, and I'll now say it again, that I love the Hispanic culture, and the Mexican culture in particular. I even speak passable Spanish because of my love for that culture. I love the "love of family" that I have seen with my various Mexican friends, and I love the fact that there is such generosity when it comes to food! I swear, it always amazes me how "selfish" my own culture is when it comes to food! When I have been to my Mexican friends' homes, one of the first things I am offered is food! When I was a starving WOW in Los Angeles, I had a friend named Tomas Montana. And his family was a bunch of illegals, and they were poor. But whenever I went to his home with him, food was foisted upon me, and it wouldd have been a breach of protocol had I not acctepted. And I will bet you Tom, that these are things that Dot would delight in also, and maybe already does! But she is not talking about that! She is talking about an infestation of particularly bad illegal immigrants who have invaded and ruined her and her husbands' lifes' dreams! I mean, come on, crapping in the woods, crapping in the dressing booths of the Wal-Mart store, camping in the woods and trashing everything about them, boom boxes, fifteen to a single family home, etc. Apparently, this particular place is NOT one of the places where a "nice immigration" is taking place. And remember, Dot said that there are fifteen hundred REGISTERED gang members in her county. And how many are there who have not yet been registered by the long arm of the Law? And so, she speaks of her frustrations, and you basically say that she "smacks of racism", and that I jump in and start my I mean, come on Tom, I know you have a Mexican wife, and in a way, I envy you for I know what I love about Hispanic women. And I mean that respectfully. No "Jonny Lingo inuendo" intended at all. But really, I am only siding very strongly with Dotmatrix because of her very specific situation where a particular group of illegal aliens have outright destroyed the law abiding and peaceful county where she lives. Not to mention the economic disaster of having her homes' equity destroyed because of this situation. And I believe that our Federal, State, and Local governments have their hands tied due to the fear of not being politically correct. I believe that The Law should be completely ethnically and totally color blind. I should be every bit as responsible to the Law as anyone else, be they legal ethnic minorities, illegal ethnic minorities, legal non minorities or whoever. Tom, really, I think you have me figured out all wrong, and as an "old friend" here at the GSCafe, I wish you would reconsider your statement that "That is what Jonny always does". I am just excited for Dot to get away from such a scary scene. Peace man.... And Dot, may you find your answer of peace!
  7. And shoot, I remember one year when the politicians here in Juneau were making jokes at nice dinner gatherings and saying this one phrase; "Hey! This food is great! We're eating like prisoners!" Because, the prisoners at our Lemon Creek Correctional facility were getting halibut and king crab once a week! That practice has stopped thoough. At least the king crab anyway. But it hasn't stopped crossing our dinner table! Mmm! I catch 'em just north of here at Amalga Harbor. They are plentiful there, although the sport season is over for the year in that they are now spawing and their eggs are waiting to hatch out....
  8. And WG, I cannot imagine the frustration of such a situation like you described. In the name of "political correctness" our government has failed to enforce the laws already on the books. All illegal aliens should simply be deported, period. And Dot, your situation just seems to be to me, quite unbearable. And for those who judge you for expressing your frustrations, well, all I can say is shame on them! I am just "sure" that they would love to see their entire future retirement (home equity, as in your case) just plain dissipate because of the political correct atmosphere that allows illegal immigrants to run roughshod over the rights of law abiding tax paying citizens. Oh yes, this thread has turned political. I have seen the snide remarks made to you here, and I must say that it is sickening to see others sit in their "comfy" little zones and snipe at you for wanting this change in your life, and your expressing as to why you want to leave. The same thing happened on the "Gangs" thread. Well, as I think Dmiller says from time to time; "fuggem". I am thankful that I live in a portion of America where freedom still rings. But, our total state's population is only 675,000 (smaller than Portland Oregon), and yet two and a half times bigger than Texas. And so, the corruption that is killing our country hasn't hit the big time here, yet...

  10. And by the way, if I might crow a bit, the town where I still own a home (but have been renting it out for a couple of years) was listed in Outside Magazine as one of twenty "Adventure Dream Towns" to live in. And the article is here: http://outside.away.com/outside/destinatio...am_towns_6.html And because of this article, there have been numerous folks from Down South who have since moved to our beloved Haines. Check it out.
  11. Ya know Dot, there is another nice place I can think of, and that is Bellingham, Washington. It is about 2 hours north of Seattle proper, and is also on the waters of the Northwest Coast. It is more urban than say, Hamilton, MT, but you can live "out" some and get a hold of some nice rural property. Alaska's ferries put into Bellingham Bay, and provide for a nice maritime view at times. I worked on those ferries for years, and it's really quite inexpensive to hop aboard for a brief foray up into The Great Land (Alaska's name given it by the indians) if you wanted to. I believe that housing is moderately priced there, and you would love the seaside and maritime aspects of Bellingham. The summers are pleasant, it rains less than Seattle, and there are lots of college kids there who brighten up the place with their youth and vitality. Lots of Alaska kids go to college down there. And the seafood! Yum! You'd be right by the sea, and there is good employment opportunity there as well. I think there is a good sized hospital there too. Yup, I have always thought of Bellingham as a toned down version of Alaska. I don't think the crime rate there is high, and I have spent many a "night life night" there with fellow shipmates and I never ran into any problems. Good music in town also. Well, just a thought. I know that you'll pick a nice place. I for one would shun the heat of the Southwest. Plus, there is a big illegal alien problem there, and it seems that you are tired of all of that for awhile. English is still the main language in Bellingham fore shore. Now, if you really want an adventure, the Last Frontier still beckons to those who really want an adventurous change. One thing that really gives me comfort up here is that if ever the whole dang country went into another era like The Great Depression, I know full well that I will be in a very lightly populated area, and I could easily live offa the fatta the land/sea. And for me, I like the fact that I live in one of the last "wild places". But anyway Dot, I have read with interest the things you've mentioned about the gangs in your area, and I am truly happy that you are getting out, even though some may call it "white flight". And not to say that anyone on this particular thread has intimated that at all. There is another some one who did at another time though. Anyway, I truly wish you and yours the very best on your move! http://whatcom.kulshan.com/virtual/picture...=1&Index=17 The Pacific NW is green and cool and beautiful!
  12. Rottie, that's a very reasonable question, the one that you pose. But, since peace and tranquility is something that God says we should seek, I think that the small and quiet town, where things may be "boring" is the place that someone who is harrassed by the evils of gangwarfare and etc, should seek out, get used to, and finally learn to enjoy! I live up here where it is very tolerable, and, I love it! Only one or two murder trials every other year! And, I like that. Peacefull is better than "not boring" in my own humble opinion. Selah...
  13. And in Hamilton MT, which is booming, there will be more and more people there that will need medical attention, and hence, no doubt room for what you do in that field. Will you be carrying away any equity from the house that you sold Dot? And Bramble, that talk of river rafting sounds so danged inviting. I used to inner tube the Clackamas and Sandy Rivers in Oregon when I was 20-22 years old. What fun and idyllic delight! "The West Is The Best" said some famous rocker....
  14. Montana. And if you move there, you could grow a crop of dental floss.
  15. Ya know Dot, Rascal's idea here sounds mighty fine. That Tennesee is really nice. And, you could even go to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge! And while there you can see Lou Vuto, ex Corpsguy (uno-c-corpsguy! Mmmm, sorry bout that) who does an Elvis imitation act thing. But then again, there is the employment opportunity thing. It may not be great there. And hey Rascal, how is the fishing down there? All in all though, I would have to pick The West. But not so far south like where Rocky lives. I think you should take a nice long look at Hamilton, Montana. I have a buddy who builds custom homes there, and he says the place is booming. Summers are nice, winters are real winter, and it is way beautiful. The lakes and streams are very beautiful and clear. My friend, who moved there from Haines, Alaska, has been trying to convince me to come on back down to "America" (as we Alaskans call it jokingly) and move to Hamilton. It sounds very tempting. And if we did move there I'd get me some horses! http://protophoto.com/subject.html?subject_id=188
  16. Yeah, Eastern Oregon is nice. I know of a little town called Baker which is near the Blue Mountains which is soo nice. The economy there is not booming though. With the income that we have now, we could live in one of those quiet little places. To us, Juneau is nice, with all of the ammenities and beauty, but for me, it is still a bigger place than I want to be. Yeah yeah, I know, 30,000 is a small population. Someplace like Baker would be nice. And oh to smell that sagebrush again! http://www.city-data.com/picfilesv/picv1579.php And yes NaughtyGirrl , Alaska winters are long. And housing here in Juneau are expensive. One can buy a 3 bedroom 1400 sq foot rancher on a small lot for but a mere $265,000.00 And here, it rains way way too much. This whole Southeast Alaska Panhandle is a literal rainforest, although it is but a temperate rain forest. Up where Temple Lady lives it is way more sunny, although they get the REAL cold up thataway. But Anchorage where she lives is a bad little city on some counts. And RottieGrrl, did you ever make it down to Heidi Fliess's stud farm?
  17. Juneau, Alaska! Crime is way low, jobs are plentiful (wanna make$16.00 an hour working for the State?), the scenery is National Geographic, no gangs, fishing is awesome, no need for a conceal and carry permit, and life is way exciting on The Last Frontier. Here is some info and some photos: http://www.alaskastock.com/Juneau_Alaska_Photos.asp But I also hafta say that that Hamilton, Montana area looks inviting to me from up here! More sunshine down thataway, but I have always loved living by the sea... But Dot, truly you deserve to be away from the place that you have described in the past. The gang/crime thing would make my blood boil, and Life is just too short to have to deal with that kind of senselessness.

    Big fish pic >>>

C'mon Bozz, what kind is he, and where didja catch him? What didja catch him on? It is so huge it almost makes me wonder if it is trick photography. It looks like a large mouthed bass, but, the coloration isn't right. And so Bozz, give us the story! :)

CC, why did you go there? You speak French, not Espanol. Or, do you speak Espanol also?
  22. Wow, talk about longevity in a thread! The only one that comes closer is the git-tar thread, which is a nice place to hang out...
