  1. Ah...the flawed logic question. Two parts, which are independent, are made to appear related. How can [pick your subject] who is [negative but indefensible attribute] be [seemiingly connected but not really, good attribute]? How can a monster do good kind of dichotomy. Unfortunately, if one takes the bait, you have a problem that can't solved because one part does not control the other. The neat thing is that it works in reverse. Just put the good attribute first and it makes it seem less likely that a good person/thing/ etc. could do bad/evil, etc. Oops, did I just give Mike ammo? Uh oh. ;-) Does using their teachings (especially now that they're dead) change whether they were good or bad? Of course not. The nazis invented aspirin and produced the Volkswagon Beatle. I have used both but don't think that validates their views.
  2. Now if one of them was picking on you or one of the other ladies... (Ok, I'm being paternal this morning)
  3. Why, Shaz, I think there's a compliment in that. :-)
  4. Raf, The chair next me is empty. Feel free to bring your cup over here. JT
  5. Uh...Mike, I was with TWI well over 15 years and don't remember being taught to have a relationship with God's son. Ever. I was hammered over the head with the statement that he wasn't God. Speaking one word to Jesus Christ was tantamount to being possessed in TWI-land. I also checked with several friends who are ex-TWI and lived in various parts of the country who feel the same way. Scientific poll? Nope. We seem to have been in a different ministry than you. Or maybe you took off by the early 80s and therefore preceded me?
  6. Maybe we could do a "Where's Johnnie" thread similar to "Where's Waldo?" Real and imagined sightings of JAL could be posted. Grainy, B&W photos only though. ;-)
  7. Well, if the bears want to know the Word like it hasn't been taught since... ;-)
  8. How many people have come to this in the past? Just curious.
  9. WW, "I don't think vpw ever dreamed the organization would stop being spellbound by the name 'wierwille'" Could be a thread on it's own, IMHO: VP's desire for Don to continue the dynasty.
  10. For Cynic's critics: If TWI had done this, do you think the reaction, speculation and/or just plain bludgeoning would have been different? Compared to how some benign topics have been treated here, I would say that Cynic was rather polite. He simply showed the two side-by-side.
  11. Mike quote: "If God (who sees all) had insisted on good moral character thereā€™d be no one to bring forth His Word as well as receive it." Which author do you contend did NOT have good moral character when writing a book(s) of the Bible? Personally, I know many people who have what I consider good moral character. Perhaps you should meet more people? Your statement implies there are none on the planet now nor ever have been. To say this is ludicrous and contradicts what I read about people like Moses, Esther, Adam and many others. "NO ONE to bring forth His Word as well as receive it?!" You may want to reconsider that view.
  12. OM quote: "This is true. Paul of Tarsus was a murderer." Before he got born again! Not while he was writing Ephesians! How about a little objective thought here, OM? JT
  13. Trefor, If it's like the first go, it will be worth it. :-)
  14. Shaz, Thank you for the clarification about Princeton. JT
  15. OM, What was the date and context of the quote? There are zillions of adoring VP quotes around. TWI had a whole practice around kissing VP's butt. JT
  16. The quote from Research Geek sounds nice but it doesn't sit well with me. Here is a guy from a VERY traditional family that stressed education. He does his undergrad word at the school his family supports then goes on to attend the theology school of a well known institution. He considers Oxford but then finds a middle-of-nowhere school that isn't accredited and is viewed as suspect. Is it me or is there a disconnect here? Either something happened after Princeton or this story is a sham.
  17. Not sure who to blame for the burritos at the Rock. Ugh! Killer. Otherwise, I agree with CW.
  18. wwjla, I looooooove your handle! JT
  19. Wow! They better hire PJ to defend them. On a more positive note, it IS the sincerest form of flattery. ;-)
  20. sky4it, Sorry master, I was cleaning your outhouse. It's done though. May I have another? ;-) Or shall I just build you a chalet?
  21. The greatest leader is the greatest servant = Old wine skin
  22. OM, Parking your belongings in a tax sheltered corporation that you fun gives immense financial benefits while still retaining control. My3cents said HE (VPW) never lost anything. Nothing about the family. Not a comment about VP's intent as I never knew the man. However, he would have avoided property taxes, etc.
  23. Evader Profiteer A-posthole Poseur Teaser Yep, all 5.
